    2 minutes and 50 seconds confirmed my choice will be the Off Road. I have an 2004 TRD Off Road now. 54 years old and never owned a vehicle with less than 50,000 miles when I bought them. Time to treat myself to a 2022. This will be my 4th Tacoma.

    It’s not just the locker that makes the OR better, it’s the bigger gear set. Even if you add a locker on the sport, the gear size stays the same unless you swap the whole axle.

      @ModernDayViking  Před 2 lety +5

      I was researching this and couldn't find an answer if this was different for the manual transmissions. We will be digging deeper into these trucks to verify this. It seems the community goes back and forth with this claim

      @joshlopez9913 Před 2 lety +2

      Thats not true. Plus at the end of the day, everyone swaps out their gears for the same 5.29:1

    • @jrig92
      @jrig92 Před 2 lety +4

      @@joshlopez9913 let me rephrase that.
      Tacoma models with automatic transmissions and OEM E-locker or manual transmission models have the 8.75” rear ring gear.
      Models with automatic transmission but lacking the OEM E-locker use an 8″ ring gear.
      The problem when you have an Open diff or LSD is that the carrier is significantly weaker. It only uses 2 differential gears inside the carrier compared to locker that has 4.
      So an Automatic TRD Sport would have the smaller 8” ring gear and weaker carrier.
      Let’s say you regear and add a locker to a Automatic TRD sport, the ring gear stays the same as a 8” ring gear. That’s the part you can’t really upgrade unless you change the axle housing.
      Also remember the lower the gear ratio the smaller the pinion gear gets.
      So a 3.91 ratio has a bigger pinion gear than a 5.29.

      Partially false, the sport and SR5 with the manual trans has the exact same gear size as the off road, that's only the automatic that differs. In my opinion it is better to get a manual sport or SR5 and just install an aftermarket locker that can be used in 2HI 4HI and 4LO not just 4LO like the off road.

    I ordered a lunar rock sport arriving in July. The wait for an off road was far too long for my wife and I needing a second vehicle. The two and a half month wait for the sport is still too long as is. I'm glad I went with the sport. Some of the extra features included in the off-road are not applicable to my life. I do plan on off-roading a shit ton, living in Colorado and all. But all I need is 4H and 4L. Leave that rock crawl shit for the soccer moms. I don't need it. With some simple mods and new tires the sport will be great for most of my driving, which is on paved roads. And when I hit the mountains, it will be more than enough for me to get where I need to go. I'm not going to be rock crawling in my 41k truck. But for basic mountain back road off-roading, I know I'll be fine in my 4x4 sport.

    I just got a 2022 Off Road in Super White with the 6AT. I’ve driven manuals all my life since I was 14 (now 60). The AT is because I purchased a dealer allocated vehicle and took what was available. It’s fine. The AT gear hunts at times trying to find the most optimum gear, but it’s a trade off. It’s not bad, just noticeable at times. Not a fan of the clutch accumulator or the spongy clutch feel. I guess both drive trains have their good and bad points. The locking diff is a no brainer. Not sure why the sport doesn’t have it. You get the crawl control with the AT that you don’t get with the manual. I like that. I also have remote start that the 6MT doesn’t have. I added Go Rhino side boards. They’re non slip which is awesome with snow and rain. I blacked out the chrome and added the black Tacoma letters on the tailgate a black chrome exhaust tip. Voodoo Blue grows on me and the Barcelona Red is excellent. I agree that the hood scoop is a distraction especially since it is non functioning. Doesn’t serve any purpose. Both trucks are sweet but I like the built in toughness of the Off Road along with the beefier tires. More sidewall adds to ride comfort. Here in Colorado, the Off Road is the one to have. The Sport is a sweet looking truck but out here we actually off road. It’s not just for show. Both trucks are awesome. I like both colors. Thanks for the comparison.

    • @nelsonschroeder2842
      @nelsonschroeder2842 Před 2 lety +1

      @@ModernDayViking The reason the 6MT doesn’t get the remote start is because your manual transmission is always in gear when parked so starting it without depressing the clutch is not possible. Can’t start the engine unless you depress the clutch and using remote start you can’t do that which makes it impossible to use. But I’m sure you knew that so no need for me to belabor that. Sorry.

      I really don't understand why people think the 4x4 sport or sr5 can't go "off road" just because it doesn't have a locker. Everytime I go out on trails on the weekend I see most of the time sport and SR5 4x4's it's like some people have this mentality that just because it doesn't have a locker it will get stuck as soon as it leaves the pavement. I have never owned a 4x4 with lockers and I have done most of the trails in Moab UT and many other trails in nevada and arizona and have never ran into a situation where I "needed" a locker, sure I would have had an easier time but it was not required like some people think. Also, like you said the trim is much nicer while the off road looks cheaper in my eyes. Being in the driver seat seeing that beautiful hood is a plus! And 4 hi 4 lo is enough to do forest service roads and the majority of off road. Towing capability is the same. So, I went with the sport. My only knock on the Taco is the grabby brakes and super light steering. The Sport trims seem to come with more upgrade packaged that most the TRD OR models. Don’t buy a Toyota truck they are being designed by ex Chrysler engineers. Mike Sweers has destroyed Toyotas quality reputation. Own a 2016 and would never buy another one. Howling rear end, squealing idle pulley, leaking coolant on back side of motor from a plastic transfer pipe which will go bad before 100,000. These are poorly designed trucks. Look cool and that’s it. Hard to see out of. Leaking tri lights above the cab. Squeaking clutch pedal, squeaking suspension. I could go on.
