  • Toyota still offers the 2022 Tacoma with a stick shift and clutch pedal, which transforms this utilitarian truck into a much more engaging, almost fun-to-drive pickup. Watch as HotCars contributor Michael Van Runkle takes a manual Tacoma out to Rowher Flats in Southern California to test the TRD Pro's upgraded suspension, tires, and skid plates.
The manual transmission also helps the Tacoma's 3.5-liter V6 put down all 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque much better, with short lower gear ratios that make crawling in 4-Low all the more possible. Now, if only Toyota still sold the 4Runner with a stick shift!

    I have a '12 and it's a manual TRD sport 4x4, and wouldn't have a taco any other way 🤘🏾😎🤘🏾

In the US for 2023, the Off Road version with a 6 foot bed is not available with a manual transmission - only versions with a 5 foot bed can be manual except for the TRD Sport version, which however does not have a rear lock.
Interestingly, in Canada there is an Off Road version with Access Cab with a 6 foot bed and a manual transmission.

You're absolutely correct. And it's really a peculiar move from toyota. I saw a trd off road, manual, access cab being reviewed on CZcams. It was from Canada. I found this extremely frustrating and disappointing...

Differently not more fuel efficient. However, I love my MT Pro.
bit of overkill using 4L o and the locker. Fun video, looks like a great day

4Runner no manual since 2002 fyi. Quick ✅ on Google said since the 4th gen... Even tho the tires don't look like much they r impressive. Same tires off-road or Pro models fyi

Yes, I will take a Manual over a Automatic as a daily driver. A Manual is what I drive now and is what I prefer.

Crawl control doesn't come on manuals. Has nothing to do if its a Pro or Offroad. Both come with crawl control if it is an automatic. Manuals come with A-TRAC in place of crawl control

My manual 2005 Tacoma needs to be in gear to switch it into 4 Lo, so I'm surprised to hear him say he was in neutral. Is that how it is with the newer generation?

Only two "trucks" that come in manual are tacomas and the gladiator which imo is a hybrid truck body. That sold me

Gotta put exterior cameras on these vehicles, I can’t tell if you’re going down a dirt road or doing extreme off road, I wanna see exactly how rough the trail is. Just a single camera up front would be good. Oh wait, you did, unfortunately 98% of the video was on you, can’t be impressed by a trucks off-road capabilities when I can’t see what it’s driving over.

The digital stuff, old guy or not, is obnoxious. There is no match for the tactile feel of all your regularly used things, i.e. A.C.

I am with you about the Digital stuff. I want the Tactile feel of dials, switches, and knobs. As well as being obnoxious, the digital stuff is just one more thing to break and cause a distraction wile driving, as well as Data Privacy and Data Security Issues. This is why I am still driving my 2006 Automobile with a Manual Transmission. I have lost interest in New Vehicles since I seemingly cannot opt out of all the Digital Stuff like the Infotainment System for example.
