- Everything was FROZEN! | Trucking Through A HUGE Blizzard Part 2
Thanks for tuning in everyone! This is PART 2 of a 2 part series. Consider watching the first episode if you would like to better understand what is going on. In this video, I make my way from Portland, OR, up through Spokane, WA, across the panhandle of Idaho, through the icy roads of Montana, and finally arriving in Dickinson, ND. When I got there, the trailer I swapped with was completely FROZEN! Enjoy the video. :)

You need the right tools in winter driving. Alcohol for air lines, deicing spray for glad hands and frozen lights. FedEx is notoriously bad at providing the proper training for winter driving conditions.
Shelby, you are such an inspiration in so many ways! I'm starting CDL Class A classes this month, will be pulling doubles and triples throughout Winter in Montana. New, completely different career at age 52. I'm a 5'2" woman. Excited and scared. Watching your videos is good for my soul and intel, both! THANK YOU :) :) :)
U got this 👍
I just want to tell you - you are inspiration! I start my CDL lessons today and going to change my career (at 55 years old) and you are my muse.
Yes this young lady is a inspiration! And you are never too old to start truck driving! 55, stop it! You are very young yet! Good luck on the school, soak everything in like a sponge! Never take anything for granted! Always have the mind set, you will never learn everything, because it changes day to day.but you will also learn every day! It’s challenging but also rewarding. I hope all the best on your new adventure, be safe, god bless
Just be safe out there.
I hope you got a good school, because how you start trucking has so much to do with how it's gonna go. I started at 45, seven years after retiring from the military, and picked a very good company with their own school, M.S. Carriers. But not all the company-owned schools are so great, and some of the companies that have schools aren't so great, either. I'm reminded of the two school-grads from Swift who were team-driving and busted at an inspection having duplicate CDLs down to the last detail, supposedly earned at a state facility before the end of
their driving school. So ask around about the school you're going to, and the company you're planning to work for.
Go for it girl! I started driving 5 years ago at 55 and I am glad I did even though it can often be "interesting" as Shelby puts it. I find it to be very rewarding
@@jerrydiver1 Thank you. I am learning in a good school. They have simulator and they are serious group of people :))
A good temp fix for worm or frozen grommets is to take a little grease from the edge of the fifthwheel and put it on the mating surface. Seals leaks right up.
I love knowing there's a German Shepherd escorting my FedEx shipments 😁
You can only simp for the cute girl, not the dog
Dakota is your trusty companion and guardian. Having an intelligent dog along side one is like having a person. One can discuss matters with. If your engine dies he make an extra warn t h sharing buddy
Dakota isn’t a German Shepherd.
@@gregdiiamond3899 yes she is...😂
Awwwwww💞💞💞
That is one hazard with LED lights on both truck and trailer.. ultra low wattage, but the heat from an older incandescent bulb is enough to keep most of the ice from building up.
So many unintended consequences in this universe. Especially in engineering professions 🙂
I never even considered that. But yer right!
Never knew that. Good to know.
It happens with LED traffic lights as well.
Since most of the LED lamps are not for saving energy but for long life they should have put a small temp trigger with a heat element so once the temp hits 30 deg a 10-20w heater kicks on to keep the lense above 32deg
Wd40 on the tail lights and trico ice wiper blades for winter. Stay safe.
So happy I found this channel ! Superb content and production. After 35 years as an airline pilot, I wish I would have been able to make videos like yours for those coming into the cockpit. Your professionalism is top notch, your ability to work and chronicle your life is amazing. Thanks for keeping me entertained while I break in a new shoulder ! Safe travels.
If everyone in trucking and the world was as kind and professional as you guys. Stay safe Shelby and can't wait to see your next ex venture. 😎😁
most of us truck drivers are kind to others but like every profession you have a few bad apples
Sadly the trucking world is filled with too many men who can't handle being alone on the road for too long and end up doing desperate things. It's very sad.
After 15 years of trucking, I start working in logisticks. I miss driving so much now that I'm looking for a job driving again. You are an inspiration, with your smile, attitude and spirit. Keep on trucking!!!
Respect...what a wonderful attitude through very trying terrains....then helping out no matter how tired you were...Fed Ex lucky to have you.
Love Dakota’s new bandanna- very safe color and very stylish.
Of all the reasons to be glad I am a "retired" trucker, THIS TYPE OF WEATHER is the top reason! It's not just the driving. The bigger issue is all the equipment problems!
Try having equipment issues 20 miles from the nearest paved road back in the Maine woods in the middle of winter...fun times...
We being there, keep that learned experience going..
Dispatch! You want me to do a what now ? You Capital CMf...love you
Shelby. Its a breath of fresh air having you out here bringing positive and awesome attitude to our community. Thank you, great video..
Yes indeed ❤️👍🌸🌲❄️
I like your videos. Thankyou for sharing your experience
Love the landscape
Please keep them comming. I love watching your dog also. Stay safe.
Hey Shelby, Wow just think 2 months ago you had 78K subscribers, and now 1 year and 1 month from your very first video you now have 218K subscribers. This takes years for some people and others will never get to where you're at. What you have accomplished is amazing and is all because you care to be helpful to other truckers, newbie truckers, and regular drivers, you produce good content and you're personality is very likable. Keep putting out the videos because we will watch them. Stay safe and happy driving...
Thank you 🥰
Still glad to see no matter how bad the situation was you still had that positive attitude and smile. Having Dakota to get a quick hug properly also helps.
I have mad respect for truckers who drive through ice and snow responsibly. I hate driving in those conditions so I can’t imagine having to do that as part of my job.
Could u please help me to find a job
You really are a trucking goddess: You're always prepared to assess any situation and it's like there's nothing in the industry that you can't do.
Always put in airline antifreeze before hooking up and airing your trailers up. Takes out the moisture that causes air leaks and valve failures. From a 28 year canadian trucking veteran.
I bought a blow torch this winter for the glad hands. One of the mechanics at 591 hub taught me to heat up the back side of both until you see the dry spot forming. It heats them up just enough to seal them again, best $50 investment in my opinion.
Yeah, but you can spend $20 on a pocket-sized butane torch too, fits inside the toolbox much better.
You're awesome for helping at the end! Also encourages FedEx to keep loads coming your way for your company. I wish everyone was as nice as you! 🥰
Could u please help me to find a job
@@amarendrabahubali5626 no you have to help yourself find a job no one can do it for you
FedEx is a awesome company to work for I work at FedEx Ground in South Bend Indiana
When that happends to me in the cold weather, i always put a thin layer of greese on the airlines. Its an old army trick.
@John Mc you need grease rated for cold weather...I carry a a torch and a couple propane bottles in my truck during the winter here in Maine.
@John Mc silicone grease, won’t rot the rubber. We get it from plumbers supplies, used for o rings on pipes and plastic gutter unions in GB.
Good choice in "security guard" on that seat next to ya!
Hey Shelby, watching you scratch that ice off those rear lights brought back memories. After 20 years OTR running reefers. I spent sooooo much time scratching ice off, changing air connection grommets and knocking ice off just about everything. Always worth the effort, when you wake up to that awesome sunrise! Take care and enjoying your channel! God bless

At big brown we had 567k packages miss, 70-80% of feeder (semi truck) drivers call in, and 10 of the 90 staff in Portland show up for preload. This was the biggest ice storm I've seen in my lifetime.
🥱”wow!!!, at BIG BROWN” ?

UPS is smart.
Today's LED lights don't give off heat like the old ones so keeping them clean will be difficult. My wife likes your videos and reminds her of the times we used to drive OTR

Thanks for the all great comments and stay safe and I love your truck nice job
You, BKM and Dakota give trucking a good name. Thanks for your incredible attitude. Stay safe.
I love how responsible and professional you are while finding every day an adventure 😍😜
🖤♾🐺🦋💙
I really liked the road shots during BKM's shifts. Night time snow is amazing!
You & Decota are like many have already posted, you are a team & you are awesome ✊
For below 0
1/keep air tanks free of water trailer included.
2/If you have alcohol bottle fitted to truck (but probably not) keep the
alcohol bottle topped up.
3/ Go to a camping shop or Walmart store & Get
A/ a small Butane gun & plenty of cans of gas
B/ a small camping stove & plenty of gas
You’d be surprised when it’s below 0 you don’t need a great deal of heat to un- freeze frozen air system + your lights etc you can melt the thick ice then spray with de-icer ✊👍
I learned these tricks from Scandinavian drivers, added together they work + carry a fold up Military shovel 👍✊🍀
A small propane torch is always your friend when temps are sub zero
You have such a big heart, always helping people!
Thanks for sharing that sunrise.
It is sights like that that make me watch your videos.
Respect for the courage you have driving in those conditions.
Very brave girl, working without gloves in the cold! And very kind helping someone's trailer out. Many thanks and keep safe. Thank you again for being a very good samaritan.
What I have for all my gladhands is a spray bottle with air brake alchohol to de ice them . I spray it in the red charge line also . It works great and will not hurt the air system. Also sometimes the metal part on the gladhand will bend and make a lose connection. Treat your self to a head lamp for working at night. Don't wait 40 years like me to finally get one . Stay safe and give your pup a pet from me . :)
Yes, air brake alcohol oh and one of those head lamps from Cabelas.
And aerosol deicer works great at getting the ice off of frozen lights, wipers, etc!
Im glad im on a dedicated fleet running from NC to FL, i do not miss driving in blizzards.
I love the Dakota “comments”. 🤣. I often wonder if my doggie thinks the same things...🤣. How awesome to get to ha e your fur baby with you. ♥️
I am watching you rock that trailer out of the snow and I realized I was rocking myself in my chair along with you.And you know what it worked you got out!
I love your work ethic your a very hard worker I can see you take pride in what you do
That was an awesome gesture on you to move that trailer that was dropped off preventing through way traffic. What amazed me was non of the other drivers gave you a helping hand to to assist you . More power to you Shelby, just keep it rolling.🙏😊
Truckers trick put fifth wheel grease on grommets seal them every time when you hook check for dryness
The one thing I miss about OTR is the sunsets and sunrises!!
Me to I do not miss the bad weather .
@Greg F
Just look out your window at home. I'm sure the sun sets and rises where you live.
Much better than having to stair into the morning or evening sun while driving.
I appreciate you and all the hard work you do. While people are at home warm truckers are out there on these treacherous roads to get food in the stores and packages to our homes etc. Stay safe out there and may Gods Angels watch over you and Dakota!☮️💜🙏🏼
Massive respect to you Shelby, I wouldn't have the nerve to drive in those conditions ! And yeah, winter
sunrises and sunsets are something really special ! Be careful !
Love the videos. After 14 years of being otr I've learned a few things. One thing that I'd like to share with you is , if the top of your windshield is covered with ice or snow. Put your visors down Crack your window just a bit and turn your defroster on. Having the visors down will help keep the windshield warm and will help keep the ice and snow from forming.
Thanks, didn’t know this. It’s snowing every week in New England and like you said, the snow or ice start to build up and was always an issue for me.
@@yoban360 your welcome. You may have to ride low rider for a bit because the visors will be in you line of sight. Iam 6'2 so any time I put the visors down I have to let the air out of my seat.
It has been said here before, but I feel it is worth mentioning again! Your work ethic is amazing!! Thank you! Be safe!!
(: We be missing you out here!
My father’s a career driver and he taught me a tip about ice as far as small applications, always carry a small spray bottle filled with isopropyl alcohol to thaw ice from lights, doors, etc.
The axle interlocks work fine at ANY speed and help in slippery road conditions. I don't know where this idea of yours comes from. I've been driving cmv's for over 35 years, even in winter all over the country...safe travels, young lady.
I suspect it is in the information that comes with the truck.

It was very timely and appropriate. Historic too. It’s been quite the winter ❤️👍🌸🌲❄️
Hello shelby, this video is awesome. It shows to everyone that it is really hard some times with bad Weather. You and bkm did a great job. Stay safe allright. 😁😁
Excellent problem solving and critical thinking on your feet, despite that hostile environment. Emergency/non-emergency, important, not important. Always finding a way to hover successfully around those four priorities takes continuous situational awareness. You're a natural!
I have seen many of the things you show in your vids. Over the course of 15 years OTR I got to see all lower 48 states, all 4 seasons, and a multitude of beautiful scenic displays. You do a magnificent job, love watching your vids.
I'm a nomad that spends a majority of my time in the CO Rockies. I don't want to drive trucks but I love watching your videos for inspiration. Living in the Rockies in a Yukon is fun and sometimes challenging and I realized we go through similar issues, although I don't have air brakes and stuff. I really like your video on preparing for winter driving. Every year I learn more and more tips and tricks to winter drive in these mountains safer. Thanks for being an inspiration to female truck drivers (even if my truck is MUCH smaller).
That's what I called stopping and smelling the Roses just taking life in I like that
quick trick i learned living in extreme cold weather-keep a back of kitty litter with you when it starts to snow. A few things even on ice it gives just a touch extra traction , 2nd if you use it early morning and if not in a hurry it will help melt the ice it some how builds conductive heat just enough. Other than that you can also do half pound litter with 1/3 sand it doesnt take much to help. You can also opt to spread some on the tires tops it really comes to the traction in ice and snow so when your tires become wet they become slick so the more surface you can cover the more traction you can get.
Nice to see all the scenery where you work , keep up the videos !!
This winter has made for some rough roads. I'm glad you're staying safe.
I saw the sunrise in your eyes before you showed it, very nice shot. :)
Oh Shelby saw your post i lost mom dad past 15 months and am so empathetic we love you so much and support you in out hearts hugs
I just happened on this video. You guys are the greatest. So great to see kind people in the world 🌎
Don’t forget to drain your air tanks.
Great job Shelby! And thanks for stressing how important it is to keep your tail lights clear to be seen. Love seeing Dakota and commentary too! Stay safe and have a great weekend!
The scratching of the lights made a BIG difference. Great job
You can get a hair dryer or heat gun ,,, less than 3000 watts and a #10 extension cord and use it to warm things up and thaw frozen parts without the danger of fire melt when you use a torch,,,, your inverter has 1001 cool uses and I see you got a really good one TOP OF THE LINE, Tripp-Lite,,, Be Safe and Good Content !!!!
I’m so proud of you girly for not giving up on that snow storm you guys be safe my love 😍❤️💋
Doubles were challenging! I recall bad grommets ALL THE TIME with that particular company. My last company had STELLAR equipment, but we had no doubles. But don't get me started on the FLATBED and chameleon trailers!
Trucking has its moments. Never drove in the snow much but it was pretty spectacular at times. Seen a few rigs skating down the hill as I was going up. A few years ago a 14 pointer broke out of the scrub, bound across the road in front of me then disappear into the scrub again. It was on a clear night, full moon with a snow covered mountain in the background. I dont do trucking anymore but there were definitely some moments.
Good job Shelby! You always have such a positive attitude. I have been driving for 32 years. It is hard to come across someone like you that takes the time to actually do the job correct. God bless you always !!!!!!!
A beautiful sunrise like a beautiful strong woman like you! Good work!!
Could u please help me to find a job
Man, I never thought you'd get that trailer out! Great job!!
I drove for years. It was fun but it got to the point, to where I hated to be alone for 4 to 6 weeks at a time.
I seen every state except for Maine.
Drove thru snow storms where I couldn't see the road, but I couldn't stop because if I did, it would be another car pile up. So I just watched mm signs to stay on the roads. Winter is no joke and no place for a truck.
So I appreciate every trucker out there getting supplies to the stores so the lives of others well be taking care of.
Nice to know there’s truckers out there like you good job. You care about other people.
There are somethings that you have to see in person. I remember seeing the night sky full of stars.
Great vlog! It must be great scenery and the vastness of the areas around North Dakota and Montana. Nothing beats a beautiful sunrise 🌄!!
Cheers. !!!

Good job Shelby! Your positive attitude is SUCH an empowering inspiration in moments of adversity, and in my every day trucking life. May you never stop shining on 😃
Hi Julien Larose🙋♀️,
Nice to read a Beautiful & Kind, Comment.
Thank you.
Happy your doing well Shelby. Your amazing at what you do. An inspiration. :). Stay warm and enjoy your time off.
One thing i do on my dump truck for iced up windows, wipers and lights is to mix 1/3 rubbing alcohol to 2/3 water in a spray bottle. It eats the ice and won't freeze
Thank you for stopping for that beautiful sunrise, and you're absolutely right, no picture or video can do justice to actually being there seeing / experiencing it, almost a spiritual feeling. The reason I drive is for the driving and all those sunrises and sunsets! The way you're always "helping"....AWESOME.
Enjoyed the view it is beautiful out there! Stay warm stay safe!
How about trying to sleep in the bunk while moving! I use to go on runs with my dad when I was a kid. My face always itched like crazy from the vibration hell it even did it at idle, forgot about that. My dad was killed in 97 while on his way to California, he was killed when his truck left the road 30 miles from Oklahoma City near Ofuskie county it was really bad I miss my dad. Please be careful on your travels both my brothers drive and I pray for them alot. Peace and bless
That's what Shelby was doing during "BKM's Shift". Try to keep up.
@@TruckerGerry not behind, I was simply making a comment about how the vibrations make your face itch that's all. You have a good day!

To keep your windshield wipers free from snow building up is set your defrost to cold and put the fan on medium. You will freeze your windshield and snow will not build up on your wipers. My tractor has sensor in intermittent wipers that will keep them on depending on moisture. Anyways, safe travels, thanks for sharing your adventure!
See there are nice drivers out there. Couple weeks ago was broke down in a nasty spot and couldnt get anyone over, another driver saw and blocked traffic to assist. Stay safe out there.

Frozen! can't seem to get enough of it......good job HBTM
For frozen wipers, set the cab heater to full blast aimed at the windshield, like on defrost, and crack the passenger window so it will flow as fast as possible and will let in enough cold air so as not cook you in the cab, that way the excess heat hitting the windshield will melt the ice on the windshield and enough heat will transfer through the windshield to the wiper blades and help them melt the ice off the wipers. Also I sometimes put the wipers on intermittent, and when they swipe, I have my hand out the side window so I can grab it as it changes direction, and flick it away from the windshield so when it hits back, it breaks off any excess ice. If you are in winter conditions a lot, take off the spray tips on the washer hose to increase the flow rate, (it also prevents ice from clogging the spray nozzle) add a water heater to the washer fluid reservoir so it will be heated washer fluid going through the lines and on the windshield.
When we had over Road trucks and log trucks my dad used to and I did 90% alcohol pellet in a spray bottle and it works wonders
When I drove team we used to split the clock into 12 hour segments, midnight to noon and noon to midnight,. and we'd switch off same time every day...looks like you do something similar?
You can always tell who's driven in the snow and who hasn't by how the get un-stuck. I'm over here shouting and cheering GET IT, GIRL at you rockin and rollin the dropped trailer out. Reminds me of growing up and dealing with winters in the Northeast (not enough to go back, though, just enough to be proud to know I'd be able to get it un-stuck too ;) ) LOVE your videos and all you and your whole team does. Give the goofy floof a kiss from me. Mine is just as weird about water.
Shelby, a few things I had while trucking in Northern Alberta. Extra winter washer fluid. Un-sticks frozen tires. Pour a cup over each trailer wheel. The fluid flows down between treads and thaws out ice under the tire. After stopping for the night. BEFORE you go to bed. Move the truck forward a foot. The tires will not be frozen in yet. The brakes pads can stick to the drum. Have a 2lbs hammer and a 3 foot - 2" dia. solid steel bar. Give the drums a hammer through the wheel spokes. Carry airline anti freeze. Put in a thimble of fluid in each air line before hooking up. 5lbs propane tank and tiger torch. Heat up anything. Watch where you place the heat. Air lines melt like butter. Last resort if trailer is stuck. After you pin in. Release and move forward 6". Back-in hard.
You pulled me to become a truck driver 🙂😁
I think your cousins did that.....🤣🤣🤣
