    For Coy Hill, the 40% abv is related to the COLA/TTB approval process because it’s a whiskey, and that is the minimum abv for it to be a whiskey. Those bottles will be barrel proof.

      Oh I totally agree with you. I only mention things like I did in this video because there’s a significant amount of chatter about it being 80 proof. I don’t like to make my videos strictly my opinion so I try and give both sides light of day. But it’s 99% going to be cask strength just like every coy hill; cask strength but differentiating proofs like all single barrels

      @apeekintime Před 23 dny

      The ABV on any label is not relevant to the final product. Talking about that from a TTB label is just making noise.

    Jack Daniels 12 is hard to find. So is the 10. Took me a full year to land the 12 year but I enjoyed pours of the 10 and the 12 for $10 at my local Bourbon bar while I waited. Will the 14 be hard to land at MSRP? Yep, but even if I don't get one I know where I can land a pour :)
    Don't pay over MSRP for JD age stated. It's good stuff but it's not life changing. Be patient, and try it at a bar. The one thing you can say about JD products... they are often in bars. You're far more likely to encounter JD 10, 12, and likely the 14 in a bar for a reasonable price than you are to find any other bottle shown on this list.

      Great video trev. Good to see rare bird on here… much respect, good sir.
      If Kentucky spirit is 8 year old 101 for 60 to 70 bucks, and this is 8 year old 101 for 60 to 70 bucks, what’s the difference? Sounds like the same exact product.
      Also curious, if the regular 101 is a blend of 6 and 8 year old barrels for 25 bucks, why is this so much more expensive? Seems like it should be in the 40 dollar range.
      Trev, I think you’re right, everything feels like a money grab these days. If it’s not a single barrel then it’s a limited release or export only. They seem to be maximizing profits during the postcovid bourbon boom.

    • @RareBird101
      @RareBird101 Před 25 dny +2

      @@karymillet8884 Kentucky Spirit is a single-barrel expression with a stated maturation location and bottling date. 101 and 101/8 are small batch products.
      I'd assume that the Russells would pick special barrels for a batch dedicated to Jimmy's 70th anniversary.
      I don't see how a bottle celebrating Jimmy Russell's 70th year at the distillery (the longest tenured master distiller, of anything, in the world) is a money grab - especially at $60-$70 in 2024 (a plain bag of chips is $7). Jimmy is a living legend. 101/8 is his favorite expression. It's what he wants.

    Regarding age statement - All legacy distilleries are bringing back age statements. It's their plot armor against craft distilleries. We've seen smaller, but older, brands like Rebel do the same thing. The older brands have a massive warehouse advantage over craft and they stopped leveraging it because they were afraid they needed to start blending young whiskey into releases. The bourbon craze has slowed (and the market became bloated) so they don't have supply concerns. We will continue to see this trend of age statements, and increasing age statements (like JD) into next year.
    The funny part is Sazerac is the biggest offender of using young whiskey. They never had a shortage of barrels - they just hoarded barrels. It's a business ploy. All the financing for their expansion is wasn't interest bearing until construction was complete. Now that most construction is complete they will ramp up sales (we are already seeing far more distribution) to match against the interest. We also probably see a return of higher age statements if bottles start to sit around when they flood the market (and the associated price hike that is anticipated).
    Anyway - I think Sazerac actually bungled the bourbon boom. Consumers are fickle and short sighted. They didn't build brand loyalty, they just built FOMO. FOMO is something quickly abandoned when a brand is available. Ask any store owner. When their store was on allocation for Smoke Wagon or another other new brand/bottle they had customers beating down their door to get a bottle. Soon as the bottle becomes widely available (aka they can reorder all they want), consumers just stop buying the product. I've scene the same thing happen to countless bottles. Bourbon enthusiasts are excited about what they can't have. When they can have it... they start buying what's good. Sazerac is FINE, but it's not great. Weller FP and Blantons are both 6-8 year old whiskey now and that's not exciting in a world where 8+ year age statements are becoming more and more common.
    Two things will happen - Sazerac will bump supply and prices causing sales to slowly decline. Once sales decline to a point they are unhappy they will throw an age statement on the bottle to reintroduce hype... and a couple more bucks on the price tag. They will rinse and repeat

The babe ruth, $60, the angels envy, $60, heaven hill $60, bookers, $60, the wild turkey better be 40 bucks cause all it is is a cross between russells 10 and wt 101.. the disco and the jack are the only ones id go 100+ for and thats purely because theyve earned that trust, but even that reaches a point.

    Again it’s about pricing. I don’t chase special releases or camp for anything if I walk in a store and it’s there and not over priced I’ll get it but if not I don’t need it. I’m really comfortable with where I’m at I’ve been drinking for over 40 years have seen the lean times and the boom and I realized that it’s more important to drink what you like than what you think you need. I am perfectly okay with WT 101 Knob creek 9 and Russell single barrel which I can walk into any store in my area and get for a very good price. No stress or aggravation. No standing in lines for hours or days waiting for a bottle that may not even show up. It’s just booze.

    Oh.. OGD 16 year is going to be terrible. Each legacy brand is looking for a way to offload their soured, over oaked, barrels. The best way, and most profitable way, to do it is by releasing an LE under one of their less renowned brands with a high age statement. We've seen it before. Often these are barrels they couldn't even offload at a good price to a private label/craft brand.
