    You know what you mentioned at the beginning of this video about "Giving someone the chance to get out of the way of the prop after saying 'Clear'" has been on my mind every time I watch a flying video. I've been doing it for years! What good would it do to say "Clear", then immediately hit the starter, just in time to give someone who wasn't clear the realization that they were about to be made "Slice and Dice"! Once again, seemingly insignificantly small things like giving time to clear is so very important for true safety. Thank you for mentioning that!

    Wow, what a great flight this way. Thank you for the introduction to IFR, I learned a lot about the procedures and the process of filing a plan and executing it. It really was eye opening going through the clouds to realize you cannot see a THING! It really proved to me that I need to get working on my IFR ticket. Because whether it is trying to punch through a low overcast later to get on top or to get out of trouble it really seems like the smart thing and safe thing to do. Also, being on top of the cloud layer and going through the clouds was truly an amazingly beautiful view!

    Two little remarks I have, Josh: 1. If you don't get a 'readback correct' from the controller, don't assume it was correct. Better to ask for confirmation (you might have cut that out of the video?) There's a good podcast about this very thing on The finer Points of flying. And 2, I may have missed it, but it seems that you were omitting the altitude when announcing your position on CTAF. I don't know if it is specifically required, but it's at least good practice to add that little piece of information, so others know what at what altitude to look out for you.
    Other than that, nice flying and cool video.

      He has the Stratus. It links with Foreflight and other aviation applications to give a live stream of Traffic, Weather, Metars, TFR's, GPS, Heading and Referencing, and so forth. They work very well. While most pilots like myself can't afford those most of the time, we resort to other things. I currently use the Stratux Receiver which you can buy as a kit or build yourself. Look it up at Stratux.me. It's interesting and currently I flew with it yesterday and was very impressed. I was able to get everything the Stratus provides, but building it myself for $150. The Stratux works with Foreflight, FltPlan Go, and other similar apps. I don't know them all. Stratus is great though for someone who wants something approved and sold and used by pilots everywhere. Stratux on the other hand is for those who like to assemble things and do it themselves.

    MrAviaton101,
    You are so lucky that you get to get actual. I am instrument rated and unfortunately when you fly in the clouds over here you're most likely to get icing due to the freezing level being anywhere from 7K to 9K. What sucks even more is all the MEA's around here are 10,000 or so. So that's pretty cool to see you be able to fly around in the clouds

    just curious, which is more challenging for the pilot, right downwind or left downwind? Was flying to Cleveland VFR from Buffalo in MFS and I had the altitude right, and completely overshoot the downwind, base and pooched the final for 6R. Not a real pilot, of course, but in simulator it seems disorienting for me to know when to turn base once on the downwind.

    • @WendelltheSongwriter

      Agree with John Flaherty; my airport is right pattern for 7 and left for 25, for noise abatement purposes. I frequently fly a Champ, so it's the same view out both windows, but when I fly a side-by-side configuration, I can understand why some folks have an issue with it. Practice is the best way to overcome any question marks with right patterns.

    Hey Josh, I own a 172M and was wondering how useful you find your IFR rating in your aircraft given the relatively low service ceiling? I've been toying with the idea of getting my IFR rating but not really sure if the aircraft would be able to cruise over the tops most days. Today the cloud layer is from 800-10000 AGL here, putting tops around 12000 feet...

    I know I'm pretty young to be thinking about this, I'm only 14 and I'd love to be a General Aviation Pilot as soon as I can get the chance, my parents said I'd have to work for the money to buy my own plane( yes, I'm willing, hah.), and I had a question, personally, would you go for a model that is older(1960's-1980's) or a newer model(2007-2014)?
    Thanks! :-)

    • @WendelltheSongwriter
      @WendelltheSongwriter Před 6 lety

      Not young. This is the ideal age to begin flight training. I started when I was 12, and now my son, who's 15, started a little over a year ago. We have a serious pilot shortage now, and it's only going to get worse. We need young people in aviation now more than ever. Get busy doing something; drones, flight sim, Young Eagles, CAP, EAA--get a sub to Flying magazine and get in the air asap! Best wishes.

    • @Shwepnick
      @Shwepnick Před 7 lety

      I believe that once you have the airport in sight you can cancel IFR with the controller to begin entering into the pattern and to switch over to the Unicom frequency.

    • @MarkFetters
      @MarkFetters Před 7 lety

      If you don't cancel IFR ATC has to block off the airport to other IFR traffic till you either cancel or call on the ground to close your IFR flight plan. It also allows ATC to get rid of IFR separation that they would of needed before.

    • @garyrisley9170
      @garyrisley9170 Před 7 lety +1

      It is a courtesy. If one is VMC and can land in visual conditions, it is the better practice to cancel the IFR so that the airspace is freed up for any IFR traffic awaiting to depart, or IFR traffic in the area.

      You have to use backup instruments. It's in the PTS for your instrument rating. I actually lost the attitude indicator under the hood during instrument training...good practice. It's good carry something to cover up the failed instrument(s) because it's difficult to ignore. The worst situation is partial vacuum loss. You don't realize it's happening.

      If you're talking about at the end of his flight...he is counting 3 seconds as he lowers the flaps because some aircraft don't automatically stop. The first 3 seconds is about 10 degrees, count 3 more is about 20 degrees and so on. If he counted to 9 seconds he would have about 30 degrees of flaps.

    • @WendelltheSongwriter
      @WendelltheSongwriter Před 6 lety

      Right Tim Reed. It takes about a second to say, "One-One Thousand," so three seconds to get the flaps to about ten degrees, etc.

      6.11 Failure to request clarification when in doubt
      Reluctance to seek confirmation or clarification may cause pilots to either:
      Accept an inadequate instruction (over-reliance on ATC), or

      Failure to request clarification may cause the flight crew to believe erroneously that they have received the expected clearance.

    "As Required" is NEVER a correct checklist response. Always state the actual, current condition of the item at that moment as a response. So, "Parking Brake - RELEASED" or "Parking Brake - SET". The words "as required" are completely useless as a response.
