I was hoping you would cover the paper in different types of notebooks that you sell (Iroful, Sanzen, Stalogy, etc.). Like maybe talk about which papers are smoother and which ones are toothier. How different branded papers compare to each other…It’s something I’ve asked myself when looking online at the different notebooks you offer. Maybe in another video? Also maybe throw in which notebooks work well/ are flexible enough to put stickers in them?

Good point Sheri! Papers can definitely be a whole separate video :) Not sure what you mean by which notebooks are flexible enough for stickers though? Could you elaborate a bit?

@@Yoseka I agree! I clicked on this video because I love the Sakaetp TomeoRiver 52gsm notebook, the black one with the clear dust cover and 368 pages. The properties I liked the most about that paper were the thin 52gsm thickness and the papers ability display a high sheen and shading. It is for me the best fountain pen paper and it's sad that it is no longer being produced.
In short, I'm looking for a new alternative.

Great presentation, Daisy. Actually, I think it is the best I've seen on this topic and I've seen many. I love how relaxed you were and how that also contributed to a great presentation. In particular, I feel that you gave due diligence to each topic and didn't rush through any of them. We were all newbies to this at one point in time and I can remember how I struggled to understand paper sizes and all the various bindings, etc., and I wish I had something of this depth and quality bach then. Yeah, great job and thank you for all the marvelous content you and your Yesaka peeps are contributing to our community.

I just buy one of every size and every brand, ha ha. Must have all of them (and fancy covers for them, too!) Surely I can find a use for all of them before I die, right? I keep a chart of the sizes in my planner for reference. It is always helpful when ordering online to have the dimensions available in the product description! Great explanation!

  • @thieleaf_the_shelf_dragon

for me personally, the spacing between the lines is super important, because i have very very small handwriting, i mostly use grid notebooks just for normal writing ha! i actually struggle to use dot grids because the dots fight for attention with my writing since theyre often close to the same size! (obviously im a very specific case ha)

I'm a diehard Midori MD blank for everything. I like that all my notebooks match. The paper works great for me and I love the minimal style I can customize. Also the pages while thin can take a little light watercolor which is nice for me as an artist.

My winning formula notebook is cream paper with a grid in either B6 or B6 slim. My favourites are Midori B6 slim grid or Fleurir Lab Marshmallow grid. I only use fountain pens. My daughter who is very artistic prefers an A5 blank notebook with bright white paper because she likes to sketch and paint in her notebooks.

  • @pointeplusplus
    @pointeplusplus Před 9 měsíci

Maybe it’s cheating but right now the winning formula for me is a discbound notebook. I print out my own paper inserts so I use the exact fountain pen-friendly paper I like. I can make my lines the width apart and darkness that I like them (which varies depending on what I’m doing with the page) and I can rearrange when needed! For me one key thing is not ever having a moment of having to switch to a new notebook. I can archive the oldest pages and add new ones when I’m running out of room, but I always have a chunk of my notebook with me as opposed to starting a new book. I like the reduced resource use of only having to get new paper too 😊

My winning formula is a hard cover with a bookmark tassel, the rubber band closure isn't a must but is good to have, and a lined or dotted paper with a spiral binding!

I thought I was pretty well versed in notebooks, but I learned quite a bit from this video! Thank you for breaking it down in a very clear, concise, structured way. I like to jot a lot of lists or short notes, so many of my notebooks are spiral bound with perforated pages. Recently, I learned on Reddit about "cheap" notebooks from Walmart / CVS / Walgreens / Target. I got really curious and bought a boatload of these notebooks. To save you time, I had the most success with paper made in Vietnam in Walmart and CVS notebooks. They were very fountain pen friendly and even showed some shading. For cheap notebooks, the country where the paper is from is the most important factor. The Walmart notebooks were significantly cheaper than the CVS ones, though CVS often has 40% coupons. So that might be a good tip for students.

Thanks for another great video, Daisy. My happy place is now Midori MD, as a true lay-flat notebook is really important to me. I thought Apica Premium CD was bad, until I tried and gave up on an A4 Life Noble notebook with so few signatures - it was just a battle to use, whereas with the Apica - once you get towards the centre of the notebook - it’ll start laying flat. It’s the same with the Taroko Enigma with its ginormous number of TR68 pages. But the Traveler’s Company clips have been a life saver. First World Problems !

    • @Yoseka

Thanks for this presentation. I guess I could have Internet searched the size information, or asked ChapGPT, but I found the video the best way for me to learn. And I appreciated the binding portion which is something I've paid too little attention to. I just started journaling this year but used an older notebook that is no longer on the market. So, I'm looking for another option. My happy place is A5, hard cover, glued binding, and good for fountain pen ink: no feathering, no bleed through, no see through.

I haven’t tried Life, Maruman, or Apica but can confirm MD, Leuchtturm, Rhodia, and Stalogy all are! Out of those I’d say shading inks show up best on Rhodia and Stalogy. Leuchtturm is what I point folks to who are just starting with fountain pens as it’s pretty absorbent and ink dries quickly but there’s no bleed through. Paper feels similar to Moleskine but is much better.

Leuchtturm 1917 (A5, dot grid) has been my daily companion for 7 years now .. there have been times when I craved white paper (instead of the sepia toned one Leuchtturm has) but lately I discovered that most of my favorite inks just look better on sepia paper anyways :D .. sometimes I have my eye out for other notebooks out there, but honestly, I always come back to the Leuchtturm, because it is ideal for me :)

As a lefty spiralbound is my least favorite binding of all time. I either go with hardcover journals with a bookmark tassel and an elastic closure (although I can buy separate broad elastics from Chuyu Culture for that purpose) for longhand journaling or a ring binder that gives me the freedom to mix and match papers with different linings for different subjects. Kokuyo has very nice binders that open quietly (no danger of accidentally piercing your finger when you snap the rings closed) and their larger sizes already come with dividers. Sarasara paper comes lined in 5mm, 6mm, and 7mm, and then they have "science" lining for math, physics, and chemistry. And they sell study planner inserts too. (Not affiliated with Kokuyo. Just a happy return customer.)
I don't think you guys have done a video on notebooks from Taiwan IIRC. Leatai was praised by a famous Japanese stationery magazine. I like their fountain pen-friendly paper a lot. Conifer makes hardcover journals that cost around NT$150 (depending on the size) compared to NT$800 for LT1917. I was waiting for recommendations based on pens/media used on the paper. This could be combined with the texture of the paper.

  • @Inazarab

B5 is the sweet spot for me. And the kokuyo soft ring is really underestimated imo. I've used notebooks that cost 5 times as much but the kokuyo soft ring has the best paper other than trp.
