Studying the masters really does help! Painting a John Singer Sargent mastercopy is always a great lesson. I learn so much about him and myself every single time. Lately I feel that my eyes are seeing more than they did before, and it is truly helping me with my paintings. Here I painted a Sargent portrait painting of his teacher, Carolus-Duran. Feel free to join me in this paint with me session! Agh, I can't wait to fill up my sketchbook! It would be my first complete sketchbook EVER!

It's so important for beginners to see the real process of making a painting, the adjustments and revisions. Not every instructor has the self-confidence to reveal this, or to self-critique out loud! We liked seeing this example of painting in a sketchbook, too! Great idea for artists who want to conserve the materials budget without sacrificing essential practice.

I think it was HulloAlice who referred to the early middle stage of a drawing or painting as the "Awkward Teenager Phase". Painter Jerry Yarnell has a TV show where he does instructional landscapes, and you could almost make a drinking game out of listening for when he says "I know you're saying, 'He's really got a mess going there.' It gets better. I promise." You "theatre mask" effect wasn't too bad, and your end result was really good. Thanks for showing the whole process.

I suppose every painting has a "ugly" stage 🤷🏻‍♀️ hahah Thank you!

5:30 we call that the "Guy Fawkes Mask" stage of the painting process 🤣

OMG! I saw that portrait in the Denver Art Museum many times this past year. His eyes seem to follow you. Was always a favorite of mine but could never find the name. What’re the odds you choose that and put it in your thumbnail! Love the vibe of this vid, you have a new subscriber!

This was a great video! I definitely need to do more master studies. I also want to try traditional painting (I mostly do digital art), but trying to mix colors to get the right one(s) terrifies me 🙈And that desk is seriously cool! I love that it has ports in it - how convenient!

Good evening dear Ana 🌼 your portrait gives justice to this beautiful Artist and to John Singer Sargent 's Art..I love too 💖 in each videos you improve so much and prove that to paint with passion gives wings to grow 🐦 I'm trying on my side too 😊 please can i ask you a question..with oil water soluble painting..I have hard to paint with 😅 do you dilute with water only or with some oil seed too?..when I tried to paint with oil water soluble..my colors often mix together by superimposing them and it's difficult to achieve details...maybe I'm diluting too much or I have to use the paint without dissolving? Thank you a lot if you can help me😘bisous to you 💞

Karine 🌷 thank you so so much for your kind words! You can always ask questions ☺️ in the early stages I will use water but veryyy little amount. Generally I’ll just dip my brush in the water (not even half way) and that’ll be enough :) Most of my process is without water or linseed oil. However, at the end I will occasionally use linseed oil. But for the most part I don’t use anything! I hope this helps you 🥰💕
