The one big problem with US based testers is that US homes are largely built using drywall, so no concrete internal walls. In Europe most homes all are concrete built homes with all walls downstairs anyway being concrete. So when a router maker says 3000sqft, you can half that essentially
San Francisco Bay Area is littered with plaster walls!! The WiFi killer for sure so I feel your pain!
@@brookejohnson6974 You seem to not understand plaster walls allow WiFi great EMF through walls. You are thinking plaster walls block EMF. You are 100% WRONG. San Francisco Bay Area is littered with Steel walls not plaster walls. Remember 1998 EARTHQUAKE? Remember how ALL BUILDINGS in SAN FRANCISCO were REBUILT with CONCRETE and STEEL Reinforement against people being killed by houses falling on them and killing them. >>>>>>>You cannot really think ""plaster walls!! The WiFi killer"""???? did you ever study RF engineering, Radio Frequency Transmissions according to Radio Handbook 22 Edition, by Howard W. so not a problem
i read an article that basically proposed the reason they (the government) outlawed lead paint was really because it would block wifi and other signals.
So now my turn to stereotype! All European homes are half the size of American homes, so 1500sqft should be just fine.
Your speed tests mean nothing if you're not testing from the same server. You tested from multiple different servers that can have a dramatic effect on your speed test results.
Exactly this. Useless test overall.
What I really like is it has a built in vpn and I can use this on my iPhone when using the web browser anywhere away from home. The best app ever amplify!!
Currently work for an Isp and just got a couple of these guys in. Installed plenty of the Amplifi HD mesh kits which are also super great, But this is catching my eye and I'm exited to install these, only difference. I work with wisp and have no modems and use statics
Can someone post the best settings for this router line by line for the best performance possible
Hi I think you’d get more “true” speeds if you used a device with a 4x4 antennae and WiFi 6 capability correct? I could be wrong but doing a speed test with a phone as opposed to a new PC/Mac with a 4x4 antennae and the former with possibly WiFi 6.
Touch screen it’s totally a overkill even has feedback vibration! Love this router ! It’s expensive but no more Poor signal and it looks amazing
@@jimenezzz arris surfboard sb6190 I bought used condition
The link takes me to a Wifi 5 mesh, there is no AX standard in the amplifi mesh.
Which orbi did you use? am trying to decide between the aliena an the orbi rbk853
I was hoping he would say something about adding to the mesh system like another satellite. From a number of written reviews, it was indicated that the mesh system is hardwired so you can't add to it nor replace the satellite if it ever dies.
Two different phones so potentially different speeds since each phone runs antennas differently and some phones are plainly worse than others regarding wifi speeds. Not holding the phones in the exact same position which can also alter results when doing side-by-sides. Doing one test at night and then the other the following day at a different time. Speeds fluctuate throughout the day and night depending on your neighbor's activity/how many devices are using the same provider around your area.
Americans: “What speed do I get throughout different positions of my home?”
Australians: “What time is my internet going to drop out today?”
Lol. We are just now getting 1g speeds in most places. Multigig is starting to roll out in a few places as well
@@DroidModderX way to rub it in lol
Can you set the Amplifi Alien up in Access point mode without using the mobile App? Or alternatively can you set it up using the mobile app and then just delete that so there isn't any vendor privacy issue?
Your watch looks like it's squeezing the hell out of your wrist! Nice video. Great info 👍🏿
My hand actually fell off last month. My Dr. Said it was because my watch had been too tight all of these years
Key thing to take away from this video: Speedtests that go out to a web server aren’t completely consistent if you aren’t connecting to the same one every time.
Here’s what I analyzed based on what’s in the video:
3:01 - Central Access
6:41 - Hayneville Fiber Transport
7:06 - Sprint
7:32 - Hayneville Fiber Transport
7:58 - Sprint
8:36 - Southern Light
8:57 - Cox - New Orleans
9:49 - Southern Light
10:23 - Cox - New Orleans
This would explain the inconsistencies of the speedtest results. It appeared that your newer device happened to be hitting the servers that are closer to you, which yield better performance.
To make the tests more consistent, you should change the server every time in the Speedtest app so they all match.
Good observation
Can I combine this with a airport express from apple?
I got two alien routers instead of the mesh version. Connecting the 2nd router took 5 seconds, it was as easy as just clicking add and it did the rest.
Hi Sidestreets,
I just got my Alien router. Are you saying I can purchase another Alien router and create a mesh network without buying the "node?" Thanks!
I hate that the
mesh version does not have extra ethernet ports...
@@GerardSandoval yes, I have two Alien Routers…you can link them together for a mesh network.
Thoroughput?
I tried to buy the Amplifi for months, it was never available so I went with the new Orbi CBK752 WiFi 6 Mesh which is awesome, so much for Amplifi.
What kind of wifi speeds are you pulling?

I am new to setting up all this kind of stuff, so forgive me for not knowing what all of these settings mean.. With that said, I live in an old condo building with about 12 other tenants total.. I bought one of these, along with the Netgear nighthawk cm1200 modem to replace my existing spectrum modem/router combo I have been renting.. My question-is there any
way to make my network run better
In my place? I know that all of the Wi-Fi frequencies in a condo building when living so closely to other people cause slow down and connection issues, drops, etc.. Again, forgive me for not knowing a lot about this stuff.. The screen on my Amplifi Alien says that my Wi-Fi performance is usually about 75- 85%… My place that I live in is a tiny one bedroom condo that should EASILY be fully covered..My game consoles and smart tv are hard wired to the alien, so the only items I am using wirelessly at any given time are phones, my iPad, 2 (gen 3) Amazon echo dots, and 3 GE Cync Light Bulbs.. That’s it.. About a total of 7 wireless items.. How do I get my wireless to be better at performing? Or is it impossible due to where I am living?I do have some concrete walls due to the age of the building, but these walls are pretty much just the outer walls (not inner walls where I am moving around).
Shane what background are you running in your computer in this video???
It's from wallpaper engine on steam
Mine doesn’t work good. My iPhone on WiFi calling keeps saying failed call.
So you didn't have to go into the settings for AT&T to do a IP passthrough or anything like that?
Nope it's pretty well plug and play
I live in the country side in ireland would it make any difference if I bought a cat5e or cat6 ethernet cable would that clear up the signal or should I got with the mesh system
Cat6 if you ever want multigig
The amplifi alien wifi 6 router is on their official website along with their other routers
The only reason I can imagine for powering down the broadband modem is to power cycle it so that you don't get performance or instability issues because of a modem that hasn't been power cycled in 8 months.
I have 3 of these. One as the main router and the other 2 as extended mesh points for range. My room however is connected to the 3rd one since my room is furthest from the main router. So my question is how should I connect my Xbox through the 3rd one? Through wifi or connect it straight to it with Ethernet?
I would connect with Ethernet, shouldn't really matter
So you are using 3 of these routers? And not the mesh that can come with? Just to clarify
@@skylerbartholomew7802 2 routers one satellite
Buyer beware. The mesh part is failing. Mine stopped after six months. Customer service sucks
🤦🏻♂️ I just ordered 3 routers to mesh together
So far I’m running 3 of them with no issues at all
So it I buy this I could connect the amplifier to my ordinary box? Will I have to pay more?
Are these available in Canada?
Yes on Ubiquiti Canada site.
So u can't use that as a moderm for your internet?
No
@@DroidModderX ok thx that would have been so nice...
i own two separate single unit models of these. both installed in larger homes and the single unit is plenty coverage for my homes. i even get signal in my neighbors yard. my house is 4 bedroom, 2 bath, a few thousand Sq ft. these are fast, and cover large areas, they run ipv6, wifi6, and just work well. i run a 2Gb modem with mine and it screams fast at Gig speeds on older coaxial connection, i didnt even need fiber
Yea I love mine
I'd like to get this to replace my TP-Link AX50/AX3000 router. It's so aggravating because I have Xfinity gig service going into a new Arris S33 (2.5 gig modem) into a new TP-Link AX50 (got all of this in February 2022) and 4 times ever have I gotten 500+ mbps download speed wireless AND ethernet but normally I get 170-240 mbps wifi or ethernet. So I know it's possible for my iPhone 12 & Chromebook (with a USB 3.0 port & 10/100/1000 ethernet adapter) to get 500+ speeds.
So maybe getting this Alien router will help? If I get no better performance maybe I could send it back for a refund. Any ideas on what's going on with my current setup? BTW I've tried using a Cat5e cable as well as a Cat8 cable. Cheers!
At this point if you are upgrading I would future proof with WiFi 6e. It has a 6ghz band for compatible devices and can provide closer to full speed. Your iPhone isn't compatible but maybe the 14 will be if you decide to upgrade.
The Tp-link XE75 is more affordable and possibly better. I have a video on it as well.
Did you have to periodically reset the router? Unplugging it and plugging it back to the electric outlet?
Never
I have the new Orbi 6 WiFi mesh and I have to reboot it every day. It also won’t let me run a speed test in the Orbi app...
There is a power cable included? Fuck me man, thats crazy!!
The number of antennas in the phone is going to limit this test. Why don't people understand this?
Does anyone knows if you can buy meshpoint as add on later to the router, and how many can you add?
You can't buy the mesh point separately but you can buy another router and use bridge mode to connect to the main unit.
@@jpringle1290 dang that sucks
Apparently mesh points are hard-coded to the routers in the kit and cannot pair with another router. You can, however, connect multiple routers together. Hence many folks opt to buy multiple stand alone routers and mesh them together rather than buy the kits. It's not really a big deal as you only get a saving of approx $60 if you buy a kit rather than two routers..
You can use two alien routers as a mesh system, that’s what I did.
So to mesh this with 3 units, I need 3 routers? Ouch. That's over $1200. For that money, I should get gigabit speeds from anywhere in the house. Worse, if the satellite ever dies you have to buy a new kit because the router comes hardwired to that satellite.
Is it compatible with xfinity? And currently I have the xfi gateway 3rd gen but I am not sure about what it’s coverage is I can’t find that online anywhere but is 3000 sq ft the same or more coverage? I just don’t want less
A router is a router so it doesn't matter what service provider you have Internet with. If you use a modem/router from your ISP already, just disable the WiFi on it first. Then, simply plug an ethernet cable from your ISP modem into the WAN port on the Amplifi Alien, run setup, and you're good to go. Easy peasy :)
@@terminalvelocity4858 thank you! you actually simplified it thanks if I end up spending the money an alien this will help!
Arjun T how's the alien router doing?
@@bigmaxcc sorry bro i never ended up purchasing it, just couldn’t justify spending $400 for a router. Just out of my budget.
Did you purchase this Alien router because of the looks? Or was it because it has the best features other routers don't have? Honestly today with all the IOT devices people have in their homes, a Mesh Router System is needed along with extenders.
I’m only buying it for the looks.
Man you in America get so good internet...
Like I'm living in Germany and I pay for 500 down and 200up bout 100€ which r bout 120$ and I just get 400down on very good days and 100up lol
yeah Elon Musk Starlink project will fix that you will get faster speeds for less money
You should order faster internet, that RG is a 210 model, it will not go faster that what you get, if you had the model known as 320, and had 1gb, you would get more, most likely 1.2 GB Everytime
Comparing a wifi 6 mesh to wifi 5 isn’t exactly a fair comparison. I’d say the Orbi held up really well.
I agree that it is still a good system
Also doing speed tests from possibly a 2x2 or 3x3 antennae phone as opposed to a device with a 4x4 antennae might not be the best hardline to WiFi comparison considering using the former means not utilizing the fastest antennae in the router? Dunno I don’t know what phone that is so I could be wrong about it’s antennae
Is it true it doesn’t support WPA3 security?
Apparently Amplifi says that WPA3 will be delivered in a future firmware update..
Pretty good download and upload speeds at like 600+mbps.
Me here sitting on only 80 mbps download...
Is the Amplifi Alien subscription based or one time pay?
One time
Deco x95 is better. Alien doesn't even have dedicated backhaul. You can even keep adding decos with no real slowdown because backhaul. Not overpriced either.
Link goes to a different router!
Alien modem is a bouy from ww2 to explode on “impact”
Is it good as a stand-alone? In a 2500 sq ft home
Yes
Absolutely!
Is it good as a stand alone for a home over 3000 sq? We have issues with connectivity on the upper level…
@@Fr8hustler can’t answer that unfortunately, i have yet to buy this router just way too expensive for me. but for 3,000 square feet with too levels i’d assume 2 would be ideal

Hi Mark,
Thanks for getting in touch with us!
Amplifi will give the same wifi speed which your isp is providing. However, i can cover a large area giving good results.
For example, if you have 200 speeds from the ISP, then the Amplifi router should give the same speed on wireless and wired on the client devices. It will not boost the speed above 200 as the ISP is only providing that much speed on your connection.
Correct
I’m from LA; do you think it’s worth getting it. My speed is from Spectrum 1GB
Am I going to see a difference from UPLOAD?
My download I get 700; on Upload 40 which doesn’t make any sense. So I’m trying to see if the AmpLifi is worthy and change the upload speed?
Hopefully you reply 😅
Are these better than the google routers?
For sure

My asus router gets better speeds. I hopenits because youve used multiple servers to test. I dunno.
For such an expensive piece of equipment the speeds suck ass

Why does the title and thumbnail claim to be a 6 month later review? Wasting my time…
I've had this for like 2 years now. I stand by everything I said in the video.
This router doesn't even compete with the Apple router for range and speeds. Unfortunately, Apple stopped selling their routers. I was looking to replace a couple of them because they are old and stopped working. Its very disappointing that I can't find a router as good as Apple's.
And now Apple sells this alien router on their website.

Couple of points here to put things in perspective.
First of all if you own a small business and you need constant uptime this is NOT for you since this company does not offer live phone support. So if you have a problem and you system is down forget it you are going to have to wait for an email. Must be a bunch of geeks running this place they are incapable of taking the phone and calling you. Some of you may have mist it but there are still a few generations of people out there that handles emergencies over a phone. Unlike Asus which I have owned for years prior to that and you have an excellent phone support during business hours.
On many of those video there is a claim about extended coverage. I don't have such a big house and was able to run my house with 2 previous generation Asus routers.
Was very happy to be able to have just one. Well well what a surprise I ended up having to buy 3 of them. My Wyze cams on windows could not get a stable feed. And the second one was not enough either, I reach the front or back windows not both. So busy sealing with piping and ducting and exterior walls with stone forget this.
Must be ok for apartment building with cardboard walls like yours.
Wanted to add a 3rd party router as a mesh point and I had to dig and dig before I found out that you could not. Not upfront with the documentation.
Made the mistake of adding the mesh via able and start up wooooo big mistake got to add it via the phone app. Again no documentation specific on adding a mesh point out of the box.
They have no software support for monitoring network on a pc. Really ?? Just a smartphone app. This is not serious.
Ho and the unit itself looks really slick with the lights and so on but if you have a rack where all your gear fits in, this is not ideal either.
It appears that Asus has a compatibility problem with control4 systems so I was told to go ubiquiti. I also bought a switch from them which seems to work perfectly so far.
If it was not for the compatibility problem I would have been better advised to stick with Asus.

Black Friday I gone safe € $ 130 so here is a little tip 4 everyone :D
I think you wasted your money. Your previous router had very much the same speeds in all your tests, granted outside it sucked, but then you could simply switch to 4G on your phone. Speed is not the be all and end all for mobile devices, computers, TV etc. One only needs
The main feature of the upgrade which was mentioned in the video is the upgrade to wifi 6 which allows for many more connections. I've been able to start fleshing out my smart home devices. Since upgrading I've added 2 thermostats and a video doorbell, I still need to add cameras and bulbs so this is a much needed upgrade.
@@DroidModderX I agree. that is the real benefit of WIFI-6, the ability to add a lot more smart devices to your mix and or to separate them into their own VLANs and maintain the bandwidth. I was tempted to get that Mesh set up, but going for the ASUS ZenWiFi AX Whole-Home Tri-Band Mesh WiFi 6 System(XT8).
