- With more rain on the way, can we expect more sinkholes and mudslides around the county? CBS 8 talked with an expert about how ground saturation is playing a factor.
“Well, you know the rain we’ve been getting month after month, that’s really big for saturation. It’s very much a cumulative effect,” said Dr. Pat Abbott, professor emeritus of geology at San Diego State University. “It’s not like we had a solid two months of sunshine to pull all that water out of the earth and evaporate it. It just keeps being recharged, recharged, recharged, and the deeper that saturation, the longer it’s going to take to get it out.”
During recent storms, sinkholes have formed across the county, including a massive one in Cardiff that has been increasing in size with each passing rainstorm. Another sinkhole opened up in Scripps Ranch at Jerabek Park last week. Both were caused by ruptured storm water pipes that eroded the soil underneath.

Creeks and springs coming back where they should be
The natural valleys where rain would flow to the ocean were filled in for development. That is where these sinkholes have opened up.

Seems like all the old corrugated metal storm drain pipes are rusting out. Never should have been allowed in the first place.
However, the deep soaking water into the ground is great for replenishing the aquifers
And washing all of that poo & pee & barf that the homeless people are leaving all over the ground 🙈

I remember back in the early 90s or whenever this happened before when all those blue tarps were on the hillsides as people tried saving their back yards from washing downhill. You couldn't even find a tarp at any of the local stores. So that's how you know when it's a bad year is when the blue tarps show up all over the place. Good times!

People in CA were running out of water in their property last fall. Really hard for folks loosing their home and Hopefully there are also wells being filled.

Main causes is builders were doing a lot of excavation and tearing down things that they probably shouldn’t have torn down; moving soil that they probably shouldn’t have moved and now this is what you have sinkholes they’re everywhere all over Florida it’s a sinking Sand state looks like California is a sinking Sand state as well..🙄

California has a lot of granite and solid land, but the coastal bluffs are mostly sandstone. Hardened sand. So when they get really wet, they fall down.
Sinkholes in Florida are from a limestone foundation and that we were underwater not that long ago. California is incomparable. Where are you getting your information? Sinkholes are more frequent on suburbs where dirt was added anyways. And there's no hills to create streams to wash anything away

I have a son who lives in San Diego.. average price of a home is 800 Grand right? Where are local reservoirs for reclamation storage? Where are the gutter fed water saving rain barrels on private homes? Where are the ecologically watersmart cisterns in folks backyard? Why isn't every inch of water collected then stored so you'd be water efficient and independent instead of water dependent sucking dry everyone else? California's grandiose sense of entitlement when it comes to this country's natural resources being handed to them on a silver platter seems to have been served to you all with a good helping of comeuppance. It's amazing to me Cali folks spend money hand-over-fist at 25-35 Grand a pop for a Turf yard in an average neighborhood.. Well, we all have to pay for our chosen priorities one way or the other eventually don't we?
