Mom Warns Other About Dangers of Swimming In Quarries After Son Died

Thousands of quarries exist across the country but some can be disastrous. Jonathan Baksh, 19, jumped into Martin's Creek quarry in Pennsylvania in 2015, but he never made it back to land after suffering a cramp in the water. His mom was stunned when she found out her son was the second young man to die in quarry that year. Now, as the one year anniversary of her son's passing arrives next month, she's on a crusade to tell the world about the dangers of swimming in quarries. #InsideEdition

Not very good reporting. They didn't even explain what the actual danger was with the kid who died after coming up three times for help. Was it a sudden drop off in the depth? Was there some type of undercurrent? Other than stating that the water gets cold, and could get deep - neither of which was offered as the explanation for the kid's death - I didn't see what the point of the story was.

Even more common is the silky sediment that changes the waters density and as a result makes you less buoyant. It also increases the resistance meaning you need a lot more energy and strength to swim in it. I'm not sure why this isn't mentioned as it's a really common danger and a HIDDEN danger.

    1) Don't dive from such a high elevation. Jump in straight like a pencil, feet first, legs closed, and butt cheeks clenched.
    2) Beware of rocks when jumping into the water.
    3) Don't swim long distances if you aren't a really strong swimmer.
    4) If you get a cramp, just relax and float on your back until it's gone. The quicker you breathe in/out and tense up, the faster you will sink.
    5) Stretch beforehand and stay hydrated. Otherwise there is a high possibility of getting a cramp.
    6) Don't go swimming while high or drunk.
    7) Have at least one strong swimmer in the group that can save you.
    8) have at least one person in the group trained in CPR.
    9) Use common sense.
Follow most/all of these rules and you should be safe.

Underwater streams/rivers can produce an undertow that pulls you under, no matter how strong. You can hit a patch of cold water and lose feeling in your limbs. Something on the bottom could be leaching toxic fumes that make you faint - it's an old mining pit, who knows what's under there?

My cousin died in a very similar way. He jumped off a bridge overlooking a body of water. I honestly can't say it was a " quarry" but based on what I know of what happened, sounds very possible. The spot he jumped from was a very popular spot for all the local teenagers. He had jumped from that very spot many many times. His Mom was standing nearby and watched him jump. I believe they said due to the time of year, the water was way higher than usual or something to that effect. In any event, once he landed in the water, he began to struggle to get to dry land for some reason. Perhaps when he hit the water he injured himself somehow? I really don't know. All I know is that his horrified mother and other on lookers literally couldn't get from their view point down to him fast enough and by the time they did, he was no where to be seen. It took the actual rescuers 45 minutes to find and recover his body. I remember the day I got the news and I was just so devastated for his Mom. His Dad is one of the top execs at Enterprise rent a car so him and his family always led a super charmed life. Really never had to want for anything. But they were good people. It haunts me bc I know his mom would literally give up all she ever had just to have him back for even just a minute....

I grew up swimming in a quarry, diving from the highest point I could find and swimming across it. I remember being terrified of not making it across. I was only around twelve at the time. Only one of the many, MANY times I should have died as a youngster, I'm 60 now.

The quarry by where I live literally has shopping carts, old bikes, old bridge structures and random debris littered from before it filled up with water. Kids that used to throw carts off the cliffs still go swimming in it every year and somebody dies EVERY year and it doesn’t stop anyone.

  • @FireBosspilot
    @FireBosspilot Před 17 dny +1

So how is this any different than going swimming at a lake?? Temperature inversions don’t differ just because it’s a quarry, the water temperature is going to drop after a couple feet of depth in a lake as well. Lakes get deeper unexpectedly, it’s an over-reach to deem a quarry unsafe. If you swim out from shore on a lake it’s no less dangerous if you don’t know your own swimming abilities and you should always consider swimming with someone close by.

I used to swim a lot in the open sea and sometimes very far out (I remember once 2 lifeguards coming towards our little group advising us to head back). On one occasion, I got a cramp in my legs and I thought, "this is bad". So, in that moment I let myself "drown" for a moment. Essentially I relaxed my body as I was submerging deeper and deeper into the water. When I felt my body sort of recovered, I swam back up and continued to shore. On another occasion, I got so tired but when I felt this feeling catching up to me, I'd make my body flat on the water with my face up and relax for a bit, then I'd continue. I remember that on one of those times I had to do this like 3 or 4 times before making it to shore. Afterwards, I got more fit and didn't have this happen again. So, I was especially reckless as a beginner.

I grew up across the street from a quarry. The only time I ever got hurt was stubbing my toe really hard when getting a running start to jump off the main cliff. Since I was a kid, they've added spray paint to mark dangerous cliffs where rocks and other things may be lurking beneath the water below, several filters throughout to keep the water clean (I used to straight up swim through algae as a kid) and lifeguards at every popular swimming spot. They paddle around on canoes. You also need to sign a waiver when entering which wasn't there when I was growing up. The coolest but scariest thing I would do is swim to the island that we had. It's only about 100 yards away, but while swimming there you can put your head underwater and open your eyes to see a super deep, giant black hole. It always got cold when swimming over it.

Took the cops 45’mins to get there and another hour to find his body smh RIP Cory I still miss u to this day

What I was able to gather from other sources it was from a cramp. Which could have happened in any source of water not just the quarry itself. Everyone just needs to be aware of their swim ability and take better safety precautions when swimming anywhere.

If it makes you feel better to think that swimming in an old mining pit is safe, then go ahead, no one is stopping you. But not everybody's son or daughter is an expert swimmer like you, so they might want to keep their non-expert swimmer kids out of a quarry so they don't drown.
