- So I've had the Volvo for a year now, what do I think about it? If you 'research' on the internet you can find horror stories about just about every car out there which can be confusing for used car buyers. So, what is my real world experience of the V50?

I bought mine used 2004 volvo v50 200000km. A year later, I did +34 000 since. Nothing to say, just powerful and reliable car. I went to germany hungaria poland romania france.. Mountains.. Sea.. Confortable et powerfull. Love it

Wich engine? 1.6?
My dad had a 2006 v50 sport, it was the chain driven 2.0 diesel, he did 75,000 miles in 4 years, and besides general wear and tear it was absolutely solid, it never once failed
If you get a good one they are fantastic cars. I'm super happy with mine, I've now covered 50,000 miles in it (now at 143,000) and it's still one of the smoothest and quietest cars I've ever been in on the motorway. A colleague has an Audi A8 V10, the one with the Lamborghini engine in it. The volvo is actually better on the motorway than the audi, which is surprisingly noisy
Can you post the link to the eBay parts for the rear shocks etc. Just picked up a '12 with 200k miles and needs a bit of tidying.
Thanks for the update, it was your original video that got me thinking about a V50 as a tow car so it's great to hear what you think of it after using it for a while. I'm hoping to pick one up later in the year. Have you ever checked the gearbox oil temperature while towing? I had to fit an extra gearbox oil cooler to my older V70 as the oil was getting far to hot whilst towing without it, I'm hoping the standard setup is better in the V50
msimmons100 thanks for the comment. The gearbox oil shouldn’t get much warmer than solo as there are two clutches rather than torque converters so only when initially pulling away will any extra heat be generated. The box is effectively no different from a manual when cruising along.
I’m guessing the V70 was a 5 speed auto? If so it’s an epicyclic box with a torque converter which is why it got hotter.

Thanks. Appreciate the info on ease of repair etc. Just bought a 1.6 phase 2 2007 model which im picking up today. Gonna chip it to gain a bit. 109 to about 133 which should give it a bit more pep
Cool, turbos can occasionally give problems on the 1.6 but it's probably one of the easiest turbos to change, and not expensive at all, so it's not really anything to worry about. If you do ever need to change the turbo, be sure to change the oil feed lines as well, as it's usually these being clogged which takes out the turbo. Regular servicing is a good prevention strategy.

In the market for a reliable used car, haven't got much to spend and I have been looking at a Volvo V50 as a possibility. Great info, good video. 👍🏿
Thanks. If you are looking for maximum reliability on a budget, always look at some of the Japanese models, too. The Mazda 6 is great value for the price, as is the Toyota corolla. European cars tend to be a bit nicer to drive and own, but usually a litt little more expensive to run and maintain.
There are cheap petrol versions on sale and if you go for a pre 2009 2.0d you can find some without DPF fitted. I have a 2008 V50 2.0d which is torquey enough when needed and returns 50+mpg on a motorway journey, lack of DPF make the chance of unexpected costs much less likely.

Thanks for the video! I'm looking at a D4 automatic with 80k on the clock. Main reason been as it'll be my new tow car for the caravan. How do you find it towing wise?
I find it very good, but my caravan is very light. This version is rated for 1500kg, the V70 is more.

I have had my V50 1.6D Drive E for about 2 to 3 months and I don’t have a lot of bad things to say about it, except for that the Steering Servo/power steering very suddenly stopped working (suddenly as i was just about to turn when it happened), I’m a soon to be mechanic so I instantly knew what was wrong when the steering went heavy.
I had also noticed what I would call extensive dripping of fluids under the car, userly it is just condescension water from the AC system.
I later filled the system up with power steering fluid and tested the system by turning the steering wheel back and forth and it became apparent that it was “pissing” power steering fluid.
The steering was the leaky offender and therefore had to be replaced.
Could you post a video or a link to dealing with the corroded door contacts you mentioned?
Hi, I will try and get something uploaded soon, but it is quite well covered by volvo forums. The issue is 'fretting' so some dialectic grease after cleaning helps by excluding oxygen and preventing the formation of new corrosion.

Hi, they are between the driver door and the body. There is a plug there which doesn't seal well enough.

I have Volvo v50 r design 2012 replaced the clutch about 6 months a go as the suddenly stopped working while I was driving. And the clutch was fine from that point until now when I parked my car in a car park came back and couldn't not move my car as the clutch would not go down and had to get towed home by rac and that was about a week and a half a go the car was towed from my house to the garage yesterday so hopefully they will be able to fix it
Any update story?
Yes clutch was fixed it's my step dads car now the alternators gone been sitting for 2 weeks now not been started or anything
I'm thinking of getting a V50 to replace my aging 2001 Ford Focus. Love the Focus to bits, but the years are really catching up with it now. Every MOT feels like I'm being mugged :S
Get a E91 2.0d M47 instead...

I considered the BMW 320d but found too many reports of gearbox problems to be comfortable with it, and didn't like the feel of the car.

Hi, consumption when towing is about 9.5L/100 km, my caravan is very light, perhaps 850kg.
Im in UK now and planning to buy a v 50 as a family car. I need an automatic. Pls tell me which one is good petrol Or diesel and which year/model is the best one to choose.
To be honest, there is no one answer. If you do lots of short journeys a petrol is better, but it's more down to the best condition car with the best service history. If it's an automatic, some history of gearbox oil changes is essential.

A good one should be very comparable, softer than a BMW, but not as soft as a Mercedes. There are a lot of clever bits of design in them. At this stage the owners it's had (and how they have looked after the car) are the biggest factor in the cars reliability.

I like the look of these estastes l read reviews of this car and not too good is this correct.
I think people have high expectations for a Volvo. It's true it's not quite as well built as the bigger cars, but it's still vastly better than the focus. A lot has to do with the previous owners. Mine has been excellent with almost no problems in nearly 50,000 miles (though I have had a big bill for a gearbox issue recently) but others have reported problems. I still feel they are very good cars. The problem with forums is that you only hear about the one car which has a problem, not the 100 which run faultlessly. I would say avoid the 1.6 diesel though

I bought the phase1 version as my first car, guess im partial to any criticism due to it.. but.. its cheap! An alternator had to be replaced one year prior to the service milage point where they replace that thing, guess its one of them 1/100 thing! Being the 10th owner of the car, may have something to do with how it has been operated, of its 2006-2020 lifespan.. cant complain, love the car, i treat it as best as i can!
Which competitors to this would you, reader, suggest to me, if i were to buy a new one today? :D
Denstoradiskmaskinen thanks for the comment. When I purchased the V50 the other cars which fitted the criteria was the Mercedes C220 and the BMW 320. If I were to choose one of those it would probably be the Mercedes.

Mine is the 2.0 diesel with 6 speed auto (phil'o's garage is my other channel, sorry forgot to switch before replying)
is there enough room to sleep in the back? I want an estate to camp in until I save up for a van to live in. I won't be living in the car, just to get away on weekends.
Good question... I'd have thought so, but maybe not if you are tall. I'll try to get a chance to measure it.

@@PhilOsGarage I think the seats lift up to the back of the front seats and then the back seat back rests fold down flat? Thats my understanding at least.

Hi, yes, I do. I've now put an additional 50,000 miles on it, and it's been absolutely excellent, probably the best car I've ever owned. It's been right down to the French Alps in winter and coped brilliantly in - 16c in Val Thorens.

Hi, yes, I still have the car. It needed a gearbox rebuild due to the previous owner skipping oil changes (not related to towing) but other than that it's been absolutely fantastic, Rick solid. I have no plans to change it, it's sitting at just under 140,000 miles at the monent and still a great mile muncher. It will be doing a 3000 mile road trip to the Mediterranean next year

@@toplespecah666 in the UK they state 40,000 miles, so approximately 62,000km I'd recommend doing it every two years. I bought mine with 90,000 miles and a full volvo service history but apparently volvo don't include the fluid change, it's simply 'recommended' so it had its first change at 120,000 miles. I will change it every other year.
@@cmbecks if the rest of the car is good, and it's cheap enough, I'd do it as you then know those jobs are done and won't need doing again soon. Two potential breakdowns avoided
Great video, very informative. Im thinking of getting a 2008/09 volvo s40 1.6 diesel soon so im doing my research before hand. so far from what ive read they all said to go for it.
1.6 are nor reliable engines if we talking about the diesel one rather get the 2.0

Theres one volvo V50 2.0 Diesel Manual cost 6490 euro from a dealer near by my town😂but already 209,000km mileage...im not sure if i should get it
That seems very expensive, but used car prices vary a lot by country. The km is not an issue, if it's in good condition. Thanks for watching 😎
I bought v50 T5 manual for 6000, driven 265 000 km but it is in pristine condition and valve gear + water pump changed 2000 km ago. I love it

Hi, no, it's the 2 liter 4 cylinder turbodiesel, I drive quite a few miles for work, so the extra mpg and reduced tax on the 2.0D was the best compromise.

@@theaccidentalcaravanner5404 Test drove a 1600 yesterday , around the lower speed roads it seemed a little slow for me , maybe if I drove it on a duel carageway or something I would of maybe thought different , they are a p c a engine which are highly rated so long as you change the oil and filter every 10000 miles instead of 20000 as recommended , 2 .0 is a different matter .
