An 'accidental' caravanner, when high octane Motorsport meets caravanning? It happened...
3D printed gas drops, and fixing steamy windows
Disclaimer: this video was filmed prior to social distancing and non essential travel restrictions being put in place in the U.K.
Over time t he mesh in the gas drops under the fridge, cooker and water heater gets weak and eventually falls to bits. You can purchase these in standard metric sizes, but my caravan has an imperial cutout of 2" meaning they wont fit. This is how I overcame this problem, as well as clearing moisture from the front window.

Mouse in the caravan, but not for long. How to rodent proof a camper or caravan
zhlédnutí 2,4KPřed 4 lety
We have a mouse in da house. After a recent heavy storm I went to the caravan to check everything was dry. It was, but it appears a mouse was using it for its winter holiday. This is what i've done to try and keep them out. There was no nest, and no evidence they are living there, so it seems it was just a visitor.
How to not ruin your car when towing

Towing kills cars, right? wrong. With just a little mechanical sympathy towing need not put any significant strain on your car, its just a matter of knowing your vehicle.

Which gearbox to choose for towing?

There are many videos on CZcams covering gearboxes for towing, but these all tend to be US based, and the requirements of towing in Europe are quite different, so they aren't really as applicable here. Beaty car just buy one🎉
Great video
Theres one volvo V50 2.0 Diesel Manual cost 6490 euro from a dealer near by my town😂but already 209,000km mileage...im not sure if i should get it
That seems very expensive, but used car prices vary a lot by country. The km is not an issue, if it's in good condition. Thanks for watching 😎
I bought v50 T5 manual for 6000, driven 265 000 km but it is in pristine condition and valve gear + water pump changed 2000 km ago. I love it
@@JUICECAT187 🤙 lucky choice
I found it dries out and turns into a hard lump after a few years once it's been opened. I once used it on a brushed stainless steel splashback behind my cooker hob, but I won't make that mistake again!
AWESOME CARS
I have Volvo v50 r design 2012 replaced the clutch about 6 months a go as the suddenly stopped working while I was driving. And the clutch was fine from that point until now when I parked my car in a car park came back and couldn't not move my car as the clutch would not go down and had to get towed home by rac and that was about a week and a half a go the car was towed from my house to the garage yesterday so hopefully they will be able to fix it
Any update story?
Yes clutch was fixed it's my step dads car now the alternators gone been sitting for 2 weeks now not been started or anything
It worked well off the camera...
Nobody wants to see a video of someone scrubbing a hob, which is why the end result is more important than the process
@@PhilOsGarage But if it was working as in the seller's demonstration the uncut video would not need to be long.
Which engine did you have?
Mine is the 2.0 diesel with 6 speed auto (phil'o's garage is my other channel, sorry forgot to switch before replying)
Hello What about the consumption when towing caravan? Please add Your caravan weight also (Y)
Hi, consumption when towing is about 9.5L/100 km, my caravan is very light, perhaps 850kg.
Im in UK now and planning to buy a v 50 as a family car. I need an automatic. Pls tell me which one is good petrol Or diesel and which year/model is the best one to choose.
To be honest, there is no one answer. If you do lots of short journeys a petrol is better, but it's more down to the best condition car with the best service history. If it's an automatic, some history of gearbox oil changes is essential.
@@PhilOsGarage Thanks🙏
🙏🙏🙏
What determines which v50 is 5 speed or 6 speed? Thanks
Do you still have your v50? Thanks for the video!
Hi, yes, I do. I've now put an additional 50,000 miles on it, and it's been absolutely excellent, probably the best car I've ever owned. It's been right down to the French Alps in winter and coped brilliantly in - 16c in Val Thorens.
@@theaccidentalcaravanner5404 Glad to hear Thinking about getting a V50 or V60 for us, need something more reliable and a bit more spacious than our petrol Golf VI hatchback
I once had a rat run across my bed when I was sleeping in a trailer tent. Bought a caravan 2 weeks later.
Excellent video thanks. A common misconception is that mice can fit through a hole as small as a pencil. Not true. However they can fit through a slot as small as a pencil. According to my research they can fit through a round hole as small as 17.5mm. Having said all that I would block any slot or hole that I can find. A 6mm steel mesh over any vent would be ok.
I'm about to buy a 2006 V50 diesel 2.0L . Let's see how it will compare to the German brands I've been used too ! Thanks !
A good one should be very comparable, softer than a BMW, but not as soft as a Mercedes. There are a lot of clever bits of design in them. At this stage the owners it's had (and how they have looked after the car) are the biggest factor in the cars reliability.
@@PhilOsGarage hi ! I've bought it. The car needs new rear shock absorbers and new tires. So I can't say much for the handling right now. The engine is amazing. So much torque ! Cheers !
Thanks for the video! I'm looking at a D4 automatic with 80k on the clock. Main reason been as it'll be my new tow car for the caravan. How do you find it towing wise?
I find it very good, but my caravan is very light. This version is rated for 1500kg, the V70 is more.
Hi could you do a video on the air bag light staying on please mate?. Volvo want hundreds of pounds which I ain’t got. Or maybe via email explain it to me. Bearing in mind I ain’t got a clue about motors!
Do you still have the car and was it reliable?
Hi, yes, I still have the car. It needed a gearbox rebuild due to the previous owner skipping oil changes (not related to towing) but other than that it's been absolutely fantastic, Rick solid. I have no plans to change it, it's sitting at just under 140,000 miles at the monent and still a great mile muncher. It will be doing a 3000 mile road trip to the Mediterranean next year
@@theaccidentalcaravanner5404 Cheers for the reply, went to look at one today but needs a timing belt and clutch so not sure if worth it
@@theaccidentalcaravanner5404 on what kilometer need to change gearbox oil?
@@toplespecah666 in the UK they state 40,000 miles, so approximately 62,000km I'd recommend doing it every two years. I bought mine with 90,000 miles and a full volvo service history but apparently volvo don't include the fluid change, it's simply 'recommended' so it had its first change at 120,000 miles. I will change it every other year.

Hi, this one has the 2.0 turbo diesel. For me it's ideal
You never mentioned the engine size , sake.
It's a 2.0 Diesel
@@theaccidentalcaravanner5404 Test drove a 1600 yesterday , around the lower speed roads it seemed a little slow for me , maybe if I drove it on a duel carageway or something I would of maybe thought different , they are a p c a engine which are highly rated so long as you change the oil and filter every 10000 miles instead of 20000 as recommended , 2 .0 is a different matter .
Great video, you know your onions lad!
Thanks, hope you found it helpful 😁 thanks for watching. 👍
In the market for a reliable used car, haven't got much to spend and I have been looking at a Volvo V50 as a possibility. Great info, good video. 👍🏿
Thanks. If you are looking for maximum reliability on a budget, always look at some of the Japanese models, too. The Mazda 6 is great value for the price, as is the Toyota corolla. European cars tend to be a bit nicer to drive and own, but usually a litt little more expensive to run and maintain.
There are cheap petrol versions on sale and if you go for a pre 2009 2.0d you can find some without DPF fitted. I have a 2008 V50 2.0d which is torquey enough when needed and returns 50+mpg on a motorway journey, lack of DPF make the chance of unexpected costs much less likely.
@@theaccidentalcaravanner5404 And Toyota's are not ! 😀😀
Nice work
Thanks. 😁😎
The corroded door contacts that you fixed..whereabouts it the boot is it? Cheers
Hi, they are between the driver door and the body. There is a plug there which doesn't seal well enough.
Thanks. Appreciate the info on ease of repair etc. Just bought a 1.6 phase 2 2007 model which im picking up today. Gonna chip it to gain a bit. 109 to about 133 which should give it a bit more pep
Cool, turbos can occasionally give problems on the 1.6 but it's probably one of the easiest turbos to change, and not expensive at all, so it's not really anything to worry about. If you do ever need to change the turbo, be sure to change the oil feed lines as well, as it's usually these being clogged which takes out the turbo. Regular servicing is a good prevention strategy.
@@theaccidentalcaravanner5404 thankfully the turbo and particle filter was changed right before I got it
I like the look of these estastes l read reviews of this car and not too good is this correct.
I think people have high expectations for a Volvo. It's true it's not quite as well built as the bigger cars, but it's still vastly better than the focus. A lot has to do with the previous owners. Mine has been excellent with almost no problems in nearly 50,000 miles (though I have had a big bill for a gearbox issue recently) but others have reported problems. I still feel they are very good cars. The problem with forums is that you only hear about the one car which has a problem, not the 100 which run faultlessly. I would say avoid the 1.6 diesel though
@@theaccidentalcaravanner5404 My petrol head friend says different.
@@theaccidentalcaravanner5404 What's wrong with the 1.6 diesel?
I bought the phase1 version as my first car, guess im partial to any criticism due to it.. but.. its cheap! An alternator had to be replaced one year prior to the service milage point where they replace that thing, guess its one of them 1/100 thing! Being the 10th owner of the car, may have something to do with how it has been operated, of its 2006-2020 lifespan.. cant complain, love the car, i treat it as best as i can! Which competitors to this would you, reader, suggest to me, if i were to buy a new one today? :D
Denstoradiskmaskinen thanks for the comment. When I purchased the V50 the other cars which fitted the criteria was the Mercedes C220 and the BMW 320. If I were to choose one of those it would probably be the Mercedes.

nice simple instal, but it would have been good to tell the folks where to get the switches, fuse holders and led's because there is some whit ones out there
Hi Ryan, thanks for the reply. In terms of switches and fuses they are generally perfectly OK from ebay as there is not a massive load on them. As for the led, this is going to sounds weird, but I'm not sure. I work in the industry so used our own suppliers but as we specialise in very high end products I doubt the average consumer would want to pay in excess of £35 per meter. I'm not familiar with the 'regular' suppliers so wouldn't want to risk recommending one.
When starting out from a stoplight, let the traffic in the lane next to you go a little before you go just in case someone blows the stoplight from the cross street. I do this especially on my motorcycle.
My dad had a 2006 v50 sport, it was the chain driven 2.0 diesel, he did 75,000 miles in 4 years, and besides general wear and tear it was absolutely solid, it never once failed
If you get a good one they are fantastic cars. I'm super happy with mine, I've now covered 50,000 miles in it (now at 143,000) and it's still one of the smoothest and quietest cars I've ever been in on the motorway. A colleague has an Audi A8 V10, the one with the Lamborghini engine in it. The volvo is actually better on the motorway than the audi, which is surprisingly noisy
Is it a D5?
Hi, no, it's the 2 liter 4 cylinder turbodiesel, I drive quite a few miles for work, so the extra mpg and reduced tax on the 2.0D was the best compromise.
Great information
PG 41 thanks 😀

Can you post the link to the eBay parts for the rear shocks etc. Just picked up a '12 with 200k miles and needs a bit of tidying.
I have had my V50 1.6D Drive E for about 2 to 3 months and I don’t have a lot of bad things to say about it, except for that the Steering Servo/power steering very suddenly stopped working (suddenly as i was just about to turn when it happened), I’m a soon to be mechanic so I instantly knew what was wrong when the steering went heavy. I had also noticed what I would call extensive dripping of fluids under the car, userly it is just condescension water from the AC system. I later filled the system up with power steering fluid and tested the system by turning the steering wheel back and forth and it became apparent that it was “pissing” power steering fluid. The steering was the leaky offender and therefore had to be replaced.
Never go to a DEALER, unless you want cocaine
Ours aren't too bad here...
Could you post a video or a link to dealing with the corroded door contacts you mentioned?
Hi, I will try and get something uploaded soon, but it is quite well covered by volvo forums. The issue is 'fretting' so some dialectic grease after cleaning helps by excluding oxygen and preventing the formation of new corrosion.
The Accidental Caravanner awesome thank you!
cool video
Thanks, will be uploading more soon, I've just started refurbishment of a twin axle 1970's race trailer.
Thanks for the update, it was your original video that got me thinking about a V50 as a tow car so it's great to hear what you think of it after using it for a while. I'm hoping to pick one up later in the year. Have you ever checked the gearbox oil temperature while towing? I had to fit an extra gearbox oil cooler to my older V70 as the oil was getting far to hot whilst towing without it, I'm hoping the standard setup is better in the V50
msimmons100 thanks for the comment. The gearbox oil shouldn’t get much warmer than solo as there are two clutches rather than torque converters so only when initially pulling away will any extra heat be generated. The box is effectively no different from a manual when cruising along. I’m guessing the V70 was a 5 speed auto? If so it’s an epicyclic box with a torque converter which is why it got hotter.
@@theaccidentalcaravanner5404 That's good to know, thanks. Yes, normal torque converter in the V70, it was amazing how quickly the heat built up!
love the caravan
rany hil thanks! Was at a pre season race test day on Saturday and it was an absolute godsend when it was snowing!
There's some neat touches there. You should check out Toolstation. Some of their stuff is cheaper than Screwfix.
Parknest thanks. Tool station is right next to screwfix but for some reason I always seem to go into screwfix. Keep an eye out after Easter to see what this was all in aid of!
I've ordered a weather station to cover the mess left by the battery light.
Neat work on the 240v inlet and outlet sockets. Don't forget to check your tyres. I had a tyre fail on the Coachman caravan so I fitted new tyres at the soonest opportunity. I will be checking the tyres on the Lunar before we take it out
tyres were one of my main concerns, many moons ago i had to rebuild the wheel arch on a friends caravan at a car show when he had a blow out en route. When i collected the caravan I had factored in getting new tyres at a local fast fit centre as it was 200 miles home. Fortunately the previous owner had recently fitted a pair of brand new van tyres! its not often you are that lucky with used caravans, especially ones as old as this.
That's quite a neat installation. I would've just replaced the existing bulbs with warm white LED bulbs but there's nothing wrong with what you've done.
Parknest thanks, I work in the LED lighting industry, domestic LED strip in high end properties is usually 24v though we did order some 12v for one specific job. As we were never likely to use it again I was able to get it FOC, so in this instance it was a no brainer. The biggest cost was the wood strip which came to about £20, the switches were less than £5 for five, and the fuses with fuse holders were about £1 each. I'll post a video after Easter showing the completed setup, including modifications to the awning to turn it into a ride in pit garage, and some extremely bright 4000k led strip (24v) in the awning for 'pit garage' lighting. I've just got a few of the wood strips to finish installing, and some new speakers for the stereo to install and it's done.
When we bought our Coachman caravan I had a 2002 Citroen Xsara Picasso. I changed it just over a year ago for a 2008 C4 Grand Picasso 2.0HDi which gave me more options for when we eventually upgraded the caravan. Mine already came with a towbar fitted and was fairly local so it ticked all my boxes.
Parknest good find! As much as anything feeling confident and comfortable in the tow car is half the battle. Good plan considering any future caravan upgrade when purchasing the new car.
Just subscribed to your channel. We worked our way up to a caravan from a tent and our previous caravan was a 1991 Coachman which has been featured in some of my caravan videos and is not too different to your ABI. Looks like you've found a good one (damp is the No1 enemy of the caravan).
Parknest thanks! M coachman seem to be one of the best for build quality, do I'd say you gave chosen well (I also rate Bailey, as well as Adria and Bürstner) Yes, damp is the biggest problem, but if it's caught quickly it can easily be resolved without drastic measures. In the past mine has been damp in the toilet room, but it was fixed before any rot. The biggest 'problem' is that it discoloured the wall in a couple of areas but it's still dry and solid so I can live with that. I recently removed the toilet room vent and re sealed it as this seems to be where the leak was previously. Before buying the ABI I looked at a swift which was about ten years newer - it was so rotten that the body was parting company from the floor in a serious way!
