Pebble Tile Shower Floor - Some Tips And Tricks I Learned

- First really good tip is to lay out the floor of the shower on a piece of plywood or OSB so that you can cut the tiles to fit in that space. That way, you can get all of the tiles cut and ready to lay before you mix any mortar.
The next is to not go heavy when spreading the thinset, since it will easily fill the gaps between the tiles and make it difficult to clean. If using regular sanded grout to grout the tiles, you could use that to set them as well, or possibly a premixed tile glue. If I did it again, I would just put a small dab of polyurethane construction adhesive on the back of each stone to cement it in place, then rely on the grout for the real holding power.
I used epoxy grout and I like using this much better than regular grout. It's super strong, never needs sealing, never discolors and is easy to apply.
For a floor this size (52" x 31") it did take more grout than I expected, so that's something else to look out for.

Thats awesome john. Whats better is that two thirds of the people in the comments are already expert pebble shower floor experts. I'm going to have a lot of good info when I get to my bathroom floor in 6 months
looks amazing. I have no decorative vision to know that black grout would make that look so good.
Pro tip: you can watch series at flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching a lot of movies lately.
@Finley Jamir Definitely, I have been watching on Flixzone for since november myself :D
@Finley Jamir definitely, I've been using Flixzone for years myself :)
I love this video. You remind me of my father in law. What a relaxing way to view how to lay tiles. 0 arrogance 0 pride 0 this is just how it goes trades men. Thank you for this breath of fresh even if frustrated air.
One of the funniest DIY videos out there lol. I got some good one liners off of this...thank you!
3:42 - "wow, how did that go so hard, so quickly?"
6:17 - "at this point in my life I don't want to see anymore ceramic tile"
7:40 - "Yeah, I freakin' hate this; I do not...like....working...with this...stuff"
10:23 - "Holy Hell, this may not be enough"
10:36 - "I'm screwed. This thing has been a disaster from the get-go"
Par for the course in tiling. Mounting fears, frustration, and profanity right until the very end and then *POW* it looks fantastic. Nicely done.
You are probably the funniest of all tile setters here on YT.
Not only that but you are sure very professional.
I really enjoyed your video.
I'm just glad to see that I'm not the only one who still wears cutoff jean shorts.
Love it! Thanks for sharing. Always encouraging to see a true craftsmen calmly work through the various issues you are faced with when doing something out of the typical. Beautiful. I love the home improvement videos!
Well worth the effort! It'll be there forever and you'll get endless use out of it as you shower and it looks great. No downside, other than temporary knee and back pain! No pain, no gain!
Thank you. I learned so much more from the way you showed the difficulties and how you resolved them.
Really learn a lot from you John.
(And, I like your honesty too.)
Thank you very much.
looks great, john. I wouldnt miss one of your videos. I learn so much from them. thank you.
I am so glad you tried those type of tiles, I can lay normal tile until the cows come home without any problems, but the girlfriend wanted those little tiles and I have been putting it off for some time now. After seeing the trouble you are having with those tiles I am going to put my foot down and use the 1 metre square floor tiles instead.
When you take your time and do it right, projects turn out so much better in the end. Nice job
Thanks for sharing when things are not going as planned, so the rest of us know were not the only one getting frustrated :) End result are stunning, i truly love it.
The rock floor looks amazing and natural, and would feel nice on your feet, thanks for sharing all the dos and donts, nice job mate.
that epoxy grout stuff sure seems to make life a lot easier, I know what I'll be looking for if I ever do some tiling!
That looks awesome.........had my doubts when I saw you cutting the tiles, but I really like that the grout tied it together!!! Great choice John
John I love watching you work on this stuff because this is how I work too... Lots of cursing and anger then once it's done I love it and it's wasn't so bad haha. Confuses the hell out of my wife why I continue on with projects, but if it works it works lol.
Thank you for the great video, John. I love the look of these pebble tiles, but I've never worked with them before. I'm sorry to hear that this was a challenging and at times frustrating job for you, but these tips you've shared are very helpful. And, your shower floor looks wonderful!
Great vid John with really good trial and error tips. Love the natural stones. Look forward to see how the entire project turns out.
The way things are going here on CZcams, you might have to wait a while. I can't afford to do this anymore if it doesn't pay - provide free content for a service that has no respect for the people that helped to build it up in the first place.
I Build It Home I couldn't agree more John. You Chanel creators made it grow and now they crap on you. I think those that have been publishing for a certain amount of time and/or have a certain amount of subs should get a break!
Please don't leave us though, wouldn't be the same without you!
Looks great, John!
Wow that floor came out great!
As always, a very useful video. Thanks a lot.
Maybe the ppl that sit here & take the time to criticize & post such rudeness should've been taught "if you don't have anything NICE to say don't say/type it"...i don't see these ppl that have criticized you with there own websites or CZcams channels etc etc.. who are they to say how this or that should be done..some ppl have the nerve to talk crap... move along with your day nobody wants too read negativity..ppl post videos so other ppl can learn different options & ways of doing things..i say they do it there own way and publish it and see how ppl react to there videos and how they would feel after they took time to share there projects...smh at those who talked crap..i personal love the way it looks.. and i think you did a great job explaining to us also.. for those of us that appreciate you sharing your many projects!.. keep doing your videos.. I'm learning quite a bit myself..& well for those who don't appreciate your time can move along with there day & STFU!
Love the vid John! Looks great
Nice work John.
Thought for a second you were going to throw that first tile away and give up. Glad you continued because it looks great. I tiled our shower pan with the glass square ones and was a bit pissed at first also.
Handy tips john, for sure about making a layout for these more difficult pebble tiles
nice colours, love those pebles
Good to see that you're spending time outdoors, judging by the tan :)
Make a template of your floor, lay the floor out on a flat surface slightly larger than the template. Lay the template over your tile. Mark the tiles around the template being careful to center the tile so you have no slivers. Cut each tile inside the line and transfer the tile to your dry fit floor. Now set it. Grout and done.
Looks fantastic. I love the natural stone
Thanks for the video. Looks good.
Very timely for me anyway. Currently doing my master bath shower and will be putting down similar stone. I've only done it once before and ended up having to take the stones off the sheet and put them on individually or you could see the squares and I've seen others that turned out that way. Looks like your stones were a better match. I am also wanting to try epoxy ground and that would be my first for that as well. You've given me confidence to try that. Thanks for the video.
That is really super looking. Good job! I couldn't find anything objectionable in this video, I think CZcams need to look at their algorithms again.
(Adds additional comment to provide extra thumbs up) "Thanks for the tips. Very well done."
No waterproofing in the shower first??
Glad you had enough grout. I ran into the same issue with my back splash. Ended up needing over a gallon. At first I had only bought a quart. Ha ha ha
3:44 "how did that go so hard so quickly?" That's what she said...
Looks awesome. If you ever work with natural stone again, do a light sealing with regular grout sealer on the good side of the stones. This will make grout cleanup go much faster.
Love your shirt.
i like it! thanks for showing...
it looks awesome
Nice video John??and I like your shirt: pulp fiction rocks! "And when your gone, you stay gone!
It may have been a bugger of a job but has come out lovely.
Always enjoy and respect your DIY's they are real, you show all the hiccups.
Good job . sucks when stuff. Don't work out...glad you recovered haha
1/8" v notched trowel on that floor is money
looks great
Learned a lot watching this video. This guy is very honest and relate-able. Cardboard and tape idea is excellent!
Did a floor of this stuff in our bathroom a few years ago. It used a metric crap ton of grout from having to fill in the undersides of the stone.
Fantastic job john. I was just saying to myself: christ, those tiles look like they'd give an aspirin a headache to lay. Lesson learned today...avoid the aisle where they sell pebble style tiles when shopping with the wife or else buy a tonne to bury her.
me aul jazzer this made me chuckle out loud.
Well it may have been a headache but it looks fantastic!
Good video. I'll be doing my shower soon and was looking at the same tile as you. Your I stall looks really good since you really can't tell where the seams from each tile sheet are. Seen many jobs where you can see the seams and that drives me crazy lol. I never heard of using the epoxy grout as the adhesive \mortar before though but like rational behind it.
'I'm screwed' 10:36 Haha a feeling I know all too well.. sadly :D Glad it worked out fine in the end though!
The other little helpful hint is tape over your shower drain screen and cut off excess tape around edge perfectly . This protects the chrome surface and wont plug up the p trap in shower drain
Good choice of grout color for flooring, it made it vivid. Actually there is common conception that grout color on floor should be darker side of darkest element of tile, while on the wall it can be as same as darkest spot or half tone lighter. So commonly used white grout is cheap, but makes appearance frustrating in long run.
just watched a merkrete video where the grout and thinset are the same product.
also for my outdoor work i use a mortar for both, just grout it by laying in a heavy bed.
mortar would be suitable, just needs layed at a minimum thickness. 3/8" suffices for many types, or make your own mortar from ultra fine sand for a little thinner bed.
I use a 1/8 or 3/16 v groove and it works awesome as long as you don't have to build up your bed. Have to level float the floor first possibly if its to bad..
please more videos on your home reno! They're awesome!
Love this! Do mine next. :) where's the stone tile from?
Yeah... I have to say, John, that you're not really selling me on the joys of ceramic tile. I've got a front entry that I should tile and I think I'll put it off another year or two... :-D
Remember Art, the more you know about something, the less you'll want to do it. So, dive right in now before it gets any worse :)
It looks to me like the thinset is a bit too wet as well. I learned that the hard way with mosaic. Nothing sucks more than cleaning 10 million little joints.
So, has the shower floor held up over flat mortar? Did you seal the pebbles before grouting? Luv how you keep it real in your videos!
You Tube censors have got rocks (or maybe pebbles) in there head. You've cursed through much worse and still got published.
Looks like a lot of hard work. Looks nice but I don't think I would attempt this style. Thanks John
I really, really wish I had seen this video 3 days ago 'before' I made a real mess of my bathroom floor mosaic tiles!
I found this really interesting, the back of your head is better to look at than the front as well :)
McAVIT Yourway That's funny!
Love your honesty. So helpful when you show the problems and then fix them. Love the result. Can I do this over my existing tiled shower floor? Also, your tiles matched nicely, can you share the product name?
Yeah you can over existing tile but you need to get an spacer to lift the drain plate level with your new floor
good luck finding a small soap if you drop it and you have more soap in your eyes! :D
Looks great at a distance though!
Great job man. However on one of your walls is that just green drywall? No water proofing?
I've got the same tile staring me in the face for my own shower project. You gave some good tips but now I kind of want to throw up thinking about laying it.
White mortar and a V notch trowel . Then you push it down with the grout float to make sure none are sticking up.
Yes!! Exactly. Using such a large notched trowel on that kind of tile is incorrect. Small V notch on these pebble style tiles is the way to go.
3:45 That's what she said!
Will you send a sample pic of this tile
10:36 Never heard anyone be so happy, when they just found out, they are screwed.
Will using a smaller notch trowel help with that mortar problem?
That first piece looked f'n miserable to install. Glad it worked out for you in the end.
Because his miserable tile instaler
Can I still apply the seal after the grout is done?
How did you cut it?
What brand of grout did you used?
Do you like your ryobi tile saw?
Did you seal or enhance the stone before grouting ?
for future thought you could go grind the teeth down half way to make the grout thinner live and learn and i dint think of that a plasterer told me that one
How much money of this tile of 1sqft or packet ?plz send quick.l wii buy this item.
what grout did you used?
How did you prep the floor before the mortar? I wanted to do this but it's osb under my current shower pan
Peter Pawlak go buy waterproof sealant, paint it on
Still don't think it would of been a bad idea to do some water proofing. I kmow the denshield is pretty water proof but im just saying !
6:04 " Maybe this time I'll get lucky. "
That's a job that looks fun but is actually crappy/sucks. We had good luck with a trowel that had small triangle notches instead of the big square notches. The small triangle notches prevented the mortar from getting too deep. That was 8 years ago and the tile stayed down.
Driver. Gravity!
Use a vnotch trowel then flatten ridges out a bit..
This is DIY home improvement in a nutshell
White thin set = light colored grout, vise vs.
I'm sorry it gave you so much trouble but the end result looks fantastic.
Don't you use any moisture barriers in Canada?
Yes, tiles and grout.
Looks great John, but damn you are a sucker for punishment :)
"I friggin' hate this!" "Holy hell!" We are kindred spirits, my man.
Bonjour les infiltrations :-( la vidéo parfaite de ce qu'il ne faut pas faire !!!!!!!!
You start tile in the middle of study you're doing do it looks the same on each side
No waterproofing? That's too bad.
I'm sure you know this, but a v notch trowel is what you need for mosaics.
Agreed. The trowel he used worked well for the kitchen tile but they are much thicker and require more mortar for proper adhesion. A v-notch trowel typically recommended by the tile manufacturer would have saved him a bit of time and somewhat guaranteed proper mortar level thus even adhesion. Since it is a small space and he said the mortar was a little high he shouldn't have to worry about adhesion. Just makes grouting tricky if the mortar shows through. He covered most of the points on working with what he had and getting the job done.
Looks marvelous!!!
