    What a LOVELY score! It absolutely has a “we just fell in love” feel to it.

    A much better score than anything on television today!

    I worked on an ABC station from 1965 to 1968. I am a jazz accordionist; Mundell Lowe was a guitarist. I used to "pull in" Love on a Rooftop as a routine director. What spectacular music! Thank you for sharing this compilation!

    I never watched this show, but how can anyone who lived in S.F. in the 1960s not feels deep pangs of nostalgia? What a great era that was for the City. (I refer to the early, not later, 1960s.) Funny, Herb Caen felt the same way about S.F. in the late 1930s, and San Franciscans of that era probably pined for the years bracketing the 1906 earthquake, and so on, dating back to Junipero Serra.

      @nelsonhernandez7123…..you can watch episodes on CZcams. I never saw it until 14 years ago when I purchased most of the series from a seller online. Very good show that did better in the ratings than THAT GIRL, which premiered two days after it on ABC in September of ‘66. It reminds one of BAREFOOT IN THE PARK. The background score is jazzy 60’s. The leads Peter Duel and Judy Carne are perfect.

    This was the score for the unaired version of the pilot episode; 2:03 was heard during the opening scene [DON PORTER: (v.o.) "You are now looking at one of the most famous views in the world- San Francisco Bay....(close-up of Judy Carne's legs walking by) You are now looking at.....well, if you have to be told, you're too young to be watching this show...."], and featured an extended closing credit sequence {12:12}.

    That Girl may have had low ratings , but it had that show business dynamo, Danny Thomas ! His show biz knowledge, his inside connections( the vetaran entertainers like Ethel Merman ), his deep pockets ( Marlo's Daisy Productions ) to make up for ratings and sponsors . That gave Marlo Thomas the opportunity to perform. She had backing that other journeymen actresses did not have in their sitcoms. Come to think of it where would Lucille Ball be without Desi Arnaz or MTM without Grant Tinker?

      AND she herself shared in a TV Archives interview that she was a childhood friend of Barry Diller. Hell, with all those connections anyone would have achieved some level of success in the biz. Marlo was a Hollywood princess hell bent on stardom. But she never made it in features, which is what she really wanted.

    According to Judy Carne's autobiography, she stated that overall "Love on a Rooftop" scored higher in the Nielsen Ratings than "That Girl", starring Marlo Thomas and Ted Bessell. When ABC realized they had two good shows, they felt forced to choose between the two as so one series would not overshadow the other. Despite better viewership, "Love on a Rooftop" was cancelled. It pains me because while I understand a certain appeal to "That Girl", Carne and co-star Peter Duell were much more enjoyable and the show in itself was much more relatable.

      The series was originally seen on Tuesdays at 9:30pm(et) in the fall of 1966. ABC decided to improve the show's chances in January 1967 by moving it to Thursdays at 9pm, following "BEWITCHED" and just before "THAT GIRL". While it did have better ratings than Marlo's series (she was opposite "DRAGNET 1967" and "THE CBS THURSDAY NIGHT MOVIES"), ABC decided not to order another season.

      @@fromthesidelines Apparently Peter Deuel was relieved that Love On A Rooftop was cancelled--he wanted to eventually go into movies and not be tied down to a TV series--ironically he found his biggest success in another TV show-Alias Smith and Jones

    Does anyone know if there's any chance that "Love On A Rooftop" will be released on DVD? It was a good series with excellent music! It should have ran longer than one season. Shame on ABC for cancelling it!

      blame Danny Thomas--his daughter's show That Girl premiered around the same time but had lower ratings yet was renewed-while Love on a Rooftop was cancelled-I'm sure Danny Thomas used his influence with executives at ABC/sponsors to have That Girl renewed

    This bears some resemblance to Neal Hefti's "Barefoot in the Park" score from 1967... Same kind of 1960s jazz-pop with romantic tinges.

    • @MidnightJazzer
      @MidnightJazzer  Před 9 lety +2

      @117806909762274892870 True very similar, in fact my father Mundell and Neal were pretty good friends at the time, and that was the prevalent style of writing at the time, different horn arranging tho, much farther over the top!!

    • @fromthesidelines
      @fromthesidelines Před 9 lety +1

      Well, Bernard Slade and Harry Ackerman, who co-created the series, had "Barefoot in the Park" in mind. The only other writer than Simon, during that era, to create that kind of romantic comedy and tension- was Slade. And he wrote the majority of the scripts.
