      @@asahel980 How would he go to the ramp if he is going 85 mph it would be hard for the truck to even turn if the trailer is loaded,As you see on the video you can see that the road starts to turn little more to the left as the ramp looks like it was little even more to the left like he was supposed to do a little more of a sharp turn,which as most ramps it should be like this as the road is straight and the road starts to turn to the left or right that's where you see the ramp that is straight up with no turns so that the truck can just go straight with out turning anywhere and he can't miss that ramp,Besides this ramp that was on the video was a little odd.

      It wasn’t an accident. It was an incident the driver caused, 7 minutes and over 10 miles in the making. Starting from when he accelerated to 85mph going downhill instead of decelerating and shifting to a lower gear. Compounding when he ignored 4 runaway truck ramps. Then when he ignored the level and grassy median he could have moved. Instead of using his engine brakes, he used other people’s vehicles and bodies to slow down. The black box recorder showed that he didn’t even try to decelerate his 80,000 lb vehicle that was heading downhill until speeds went above 95mph…

Not saying your story isn’t true but I think there is some details your not mentioning, if your air line cracked and leaking then that truck should have the other lines replaced and taken out of service until fixed properly. Those lines will dry rot and leak eventually like everything else. Also if you had moisture in your lines and didn’t empty your air tanks in cold weather they will freeze and burst . If I see any fading of Color or if you can take your finger nail and scrape the outer shield off then it’s time to replace the lines don’t chance it If one is due to replace then most likely the others are on the way out.

The black box recorder showed that he didn’t even try to decelerate his 80,000 lb vehicle that was heading downhill until speeds went above 95mph. Finally, he signed off that he inspected the brakes and determined they were good and functional for him to be on the road. They are hinging it all on the fact he missed a sign to alert him to a ramp - driving a big rig and realising your brakes are failed - I would think you would panic and in this case resulted in a horrible accident - but it was an accident and I am tired of people thinking "someone' has to pay for something that was a terrible accident. Many years ago I had two dear friends who had only been married for 6 weeks. There was a driver of a van who had to swerve to not hit two teenagers riding their skateboards on the road - he lost control, mounted the median strip and ploughed head first into their car- this caused their deaths and I can only hope the impact killed them immediately as their car and they were incinerated. He did not mean to lose control. He did. With tragic consequences. Accidents can have terrible consequences but accidents with potentially lethal weapons as vehicles are still accidents. • @beachbum1523
    @beachbum1523 Před 2 lety +29

    I think a sentence of 110 year is excessive, but there is no question in my mind that the driver bears considerable responsibility for this tragedy, which I firmly believe was avoidable.
    1.) The driver should have downshifted before beginning the downhill run, using the transmission as a governor to keep the truck from building excessive speed.
    2.) He allowed the truck to build excessive speed and then tried to rely upon his brakes to slow it down. That caused the brakes to overheat, which would cause them to fail. Add to the mix, because trucks have air brakes over-reliance upon brakes depletes the air pressure faster than it can be rebuilt.
    3.) He drove past not one, but THREE runaway truck ramps, which are specifically designed to allow trucks with failed brakes an escape route.
    4.) My understanding is that the driver also had a very poor driving record.
    There is another side of this coin. CDL training is woefully inadequate. Most drivers spend about three weeks at a truck driving school, and then a few weeks with a company trainer. There are no regulations that govern who may become a trainer, nor is there any mandatory structure for company trainers to follow.
    When I began driving OTR about 20 years ago, my first trainer had no genuine interest in training. He was paid for miles, and not for training. My four weeks with him were pretty much time wasted. Fortunately, my next trainer (I went to work for a better company) was a very capable trainer. He took me from being a "steering wheel holder" to becoming a properly trained driver. He also taught me to drive the mountains. Being a native south Texan, I had no experience in driving on snow or ice, much less with a rig that weighed anywhere from 35 to 40 tons. So, my employer saw to it that I could receive additional training in snow, and in identifying black ice.
    I find it a bit odd to think that a pilot has to hold a flight instructor's rating to teach a student to fly a C-152, but no special ratings or endorsements are required to train someone to handle a big truck that can easily turn into a 30 - 40-ton missile.
