- Let’s imagine that, one day, you decide to delete all traces of yourself from the internet. Would this even be possible in today’s world?
In 2021, it’s a lot harder to disappear than, say, a quarter century ago. Nowadays, we leave digital footprints with every passing second.
Of course, being online all the time certainly has its benefits - whether it’s shopping from the comfort of your bed, video-chatting with loved ones, or binge-watching Netflix. But at the same time, we’re constantly in the crosshairs of fraudsters who seek to use our personal data against us.
In this video, you’ll learn about the databases where you can - and cannot -delete your personal data, how smartphones constantly spy on us, which cities have the most security cameras, and much more. We hope you enjoy.

How awesome would it feel to be so important that the fbi went through all this effort to make sure you don’t go missing 🙏 Unfortunately I’m not that interesting, I’m not a terrorist or criminal i watch pretty standard porn , I eat the same subways or maccas meal as I have done for years I even get the same toothbrush and toothpaste and aftershave , I’m hoping some organisation or entity somewhere cares enough about me to see what I’m doing or where I’ve been etc but out of billions of people I don’t think so , I don’t even get personalised ads like was promised 🤷♂️ I don’t value my privacy as I have no secrets but being someone who willingly hands my data over I have yet to see anything come to fruition from it . I’m hoping I get framed shooting the president or have my identity stolen ☺️ anyone is welcome to my identity if you like , it’s just a name and some other things assigned to me by other people not me so go nuts
Shocking that it's so hard to just disappear. I've really got nothing to hide but I'm appalled by the degree to which we have lost our sense of self, our own private life.
I tried to resist getting smart phones when everyone else did, but eventually I relented. I didn't want to be literally shoved into a box like everyone else.

I love the idea of deleting all social media and starting over, it's on my bucket list! I want to leave the internet and just reappear one day as a completely new person. I might miss the people I've met along the way of this horrible experience on social media but I will soon learn to forget and I will realize how much better it is just not being on the internet, in a weird way, starting a new account that you will not do anything on seems so much better than feeling scared to comment or talk to anyone. I don't want strangers on the internet who might not even be who they say they are trying to validate my life. So, yeah, it's on my bucket life.
It took me a few years to delete all my social media but you can do it! Only thing I have left is just youtube account.
Theres nothing to miss about social media and fake love/people.
@@skeylnge Ok, Kyle Xiong
Why do you think your return would have a better experience?
Most people will quickly forget about you about a month after you leave social media, maybe 1 in a couple thousand may recall you if you are lucky. There is too much noise, no one really cares.
That's the point, I don't want them to remember me so if I come back then I'll be able to have a new experience that I can make better.@@KA-cm5mb

I quit social media 4 years ago due to information overload. I feel less stressed, more happy , less anxious, and more at peace with my mindfulness practice. people post about everything under the sun. best life choice ever!
I never joined, but this. I've removed all info from LinkedIn as it became a social media BS-cringe-fest. When everyone was riding the FB wave of last decade and asked couldn't believe I wasn't,. I just say, 'it's just one more thing to check'...less is more.
This is still another form of social media
"I'm not here, this isn't happening"
Its not always about disappearing it's about finding inner peace without needing anyone to validate your existence.
This is very true. Inner peace is often hard to find when exposed to the toxic tinnitus of the roaring social city. Getting away from it all can help.

I do not use instagram and facebook since around 2016. Use regular messages and phone calls, well, only youtube. This was interesting for me. The only bad thing is that sometimes people do not take you seriously (esp new people that come in your life) because you do not have social apps. Some think you are lying because you don't want to communicate with them (well, you still can call me, wtf). But if they hate me for being me, it's ok. The first part about being invisible and not taken seriously though was hard for my first couple of years. It led me into thinking that our society indeed changed.
lol, same! 😂❤

I only use CZcams and I've reduced my screen time here and I don't care what people think about me. Not being slaves to technology is a virtue. Every platform is now turning into Facebook and Instagram. I hate that CZcams seems to be heading that route.
I also stopped using social media years ago but now I can't stop using CZcams helpp, I watch it everyday
Disappearing is easy. Staying disappeared is the hard part many will face.
You're talking about breaking lifelong habits. Some people have been "online" for 30 years. Others within 15 or 20 (whatever the date is for social media meets smart phone)
For people like me, we long for the days when a phone was tied to the house, along with the computer (or sometimes no computer at all)
I love having access to information because i am one of those freaks who stays up late reading about the origins of glue or how much baby bottles have impacted our society's psychological well being.
When you were going through the list of ways to muddy the water i was thinking.... dude... i was just looking at the prices of apartments in Inglewood and Beverly Hills just for fun. I even did some virtual driving tours of LA county. And then i went on to check out some freight train schedules.... along with watching a ton of videos by Hobo Shoestring and Stobe.
I'm not planning an escape, i just have severe ADHD!! (My kids however see all of this random content and are worried i might do a runner😂.... i have threatened to do just that but ain't happening. All my stuff is here and I'm not abandoning my goats!)
But that's beside the point.
It took me about a year and a half to break my social media addiction. And six months to break the phone addiction.
It was easier and easier the more i realized how little people actually care about you the second you switch off. 365 "friends" on fb the day i deactivated in feb 2021. And only TWO still keep in touch.
That includes family and friends in my physical reach.
There is very little i need from any stores, i hate google, amazon, and all social media. I turned off reply notifications in youtube so i can spam comments and never hear back (it reduces the urge to argue over the internet)
If i can't drive to it or reach out and touch it then i probably don't need it.
And THAT is when inner peace begins to manifest.
The only vice I've picked up is my burning desire to collect all the books. Reference, history, encyclopedias, photography, thesaurus, foreign language, Mythology..... i have a huge private library (i even have vinyl records l, cassette tapes and CDs 😂
I've gone back to 1998 living.... my creativity has improved and so has my physical and mental health.
The thought of returning to digital society makes me feel physically ill and my anxiety skyrockets. Literally feels like i would be returning to an abusive relationship. (I've escaped those too. Strategy is the same!)
This is so spot on. I’m in the early phases of this. Facebook is deleting as we speak. Probably another 20 days. And they don’t make it easy. The download file looks like shit. So I went through multiple attempts to screenshot my liked pages and groups I’m a part of. The website was glitching out for weeks and would reset back to the top. My only choice then was to download the app and screenshot like four at a time. I follow a bunch of local businesses, Florida based natural gardening groups that are incredible, and community event pages that I rely on for all the wonderful things going on in my area. So I want to be able to remember all of that. I’ve had multiple concussions so it’s “out of sight out of mind.”
So it took me weeks to ensure I had it settled. Then I thought, who should have my number. It came down to two people I cherish. And one already had my number. Oh, I made sure to archive some old groups I started with my band leadership years ago. I doubt they’ll come back as they’ve all moved on, but that was questionable and I’d like those groups to be cut off in history. Nice thing is I will be gone so eventually it will just read “Deleted User.” Then off with his head, I am finally free! I’m tired of feeling like I owe people responses or owe them an add. Social expectations I never signed up for.
From here on out whenever I come back, it will be an alias with a dumb photo. And I won’t add anyone or a certain former professor who won’t leave us alone. And no more guilt.
Amazing how chained to these accounts we are. I’m too nice and I’m done with it!
Felt so good reading this and ur journey of how u finally got ur addiction curred !
Reading ur view about how addictive and difficult it is for people to leave Social media, i realised How Easy it was for me and I'm thankful for it.

To be honest, it sucks when a website doesn't give a choice to delete the account.
just get a new phone and don't put those shitty apps on it....just use it for calls and as a guest on CZcams..out of sight out of mind
@Mandy Gee for websites like that, you can remove the trusted email/phone, after that change the password to something comepletely random, delete your account, and forget clear your clipboard which has your password.
I did the same with instagram cause I would reactivate my account over and over again.
i thought it was legally required or something (i may have made it up and thought it was a fact or something)
That's when you delete all your posts and photos are replace them with random stuff.
@Mandy Gee and Facebook doesn't totally delete your data after the 30 days.
honestly, sometimes i get the intrusive though of just "what if i just completely just leave the internet and never come back, ever."
this is one of those moments that lead me here. this is really interesting, thank you for uploading this Sumsub!
I did this years ago. I was in an abusive relationship, and he would tell me, if you ever try to leave me, you better go underground, because I'll hunt you like a dog.
Well, I showed him some underground! I moved 1500 miles away, to a city I'd never been to, and didn't know anyone. I reinvented myself and lived quite well. After a few years I was able to come home. (He was no longer a threat) No one, not even my mother knew where I'd been til I came back.
Should've just hired a hit man and bought a shovel "$7000 I charge" hahahaha!
Don't be so sure that your family would hire private detectives to find you.
Ouch, Tom.
Sadly that's so so true these days... unless they only do it to continue to be control freaks lol which i've heard of happening.
@@Sumsubcom, these comments are brutal man, I came for the fbi jokes but just got depression
My mom would be the type of person to do that unfortunately. She has almost complete control over my life, and sure as hell she isn't going to let go off the leashes of my life anytime soon.
@@FlyingMonkies325 Actually, that happend to my sister in law. She moved to Europe without telling her family because they were absolute control freaks. As far I know, they did at least consider to hire a private detective to follow her.

If I wanted to disappear completely, I would just call the vacuum cleaner guy from Breaking Bad.
Seriously. We humans have complicated our lives and the lives of others in pursuit of temporary happiness when the 3 basic necessity for humans are just food, clothing and shelter.
@@khunii2188 Well said 💚🌎🌌
I believe we all are here on Earth to help eachother. What others are here for I don't know!
This may have worked a few years ago, but in our current world, to work, rent an apartment, or answer a curious police officer’s questions, you need valid identification. Myriad speculations about being covert are more difficult today, as there’s facial and voice recognition. People leave a large imprint on society.
It’s a lot easier than this to disappear. Just throw away your phone and computer withdrawal all the cash you have start going by a different name and work under the table for cash and do the same thing with your living arrangements. If you need a phone and a computer you can still have those you will just need to make sure you have good security on them and avoid using them at home work or places you visit frequently. You should probably also not use the phone or computer for anything besides necessary communication. No games social media or websites.
@@tinytim8173 You would still need ID for things like paying bills. We all know it's impossible to live in this world without paying to live. If I build my own house from scratch on my own land the government will make me pay for it or they'll take it away from me
The fact that you were interested enough to at least start watching this video, just like me, makes me want to ask the question:

This is one thing I love about Ireland. If you get in trouble we have an open border to the UK and no central intelligence agency. In (I think) 2018 they did a survey and realised that there was 8 known terrorists who had planted bombs in mainland Europe who had just walked through our customs and disappeared. You just move to the countryside, get a used phone for cash from a pawn shop as well as a top-up based phone so everything is cash. A lot of farmers here will just take anyone who's a hard worker into their house and let you live with them and help on their farm. We have a low amount of security cameras as well.
Thom Yorke definitely could have used this advice.

The only thing scarier than our gradual loss of privacy is the younger generation’s complete embrace of that loss.
That's not true. It's generalization.
overgeneralization
@@captainaryan26 Guess what, they're called "generalizations" because they're generally true. And in general, the younger the person, the less they give a shit about giving up privacy to both the government and to big business.
@@RyanBanman Agreed. It's horrible, it's sad, it's disheartening, it's everything bad.
For reasons I can't understand, the young today embrace being told what to do by government. Yet, I'd wager the vast majority couldn't give you even one reason why they should trust them.
On the contrary, it is not privacy that is in danger today, but rather public space proper.
For me to communicate with you in the de-facto public space, the internet, I have to do it through Microsoft, google and so on. They have effectively privatized the public space, and we pay them rent to be able to participate in this commons
Being a ghost to the world is actually the most amazing thing ever. Especially for the people with an audience that haven’t revealed their identity.
Speaking of people with an audience, if you have the right connections you can disappear no matter how famous you are. Leonardo Da Vinci was a vampire. He never died. He just reinvented himself as Otto von Bismarck. (Bismarck survived an assassination attempt of 5 gunshots at point blank range. He didn't even flinch. An unplanned clue as to his paranormal identity.) A lot of Bismarck's direct descendants naturally bear a striking resemblance to portraits of Da Vinci. Bismarck is back too. He's European and he speaks English with his native accent on camera, but in person he speaks American English like a born-and-raised American.
@@evelynzlon9492 dude people can survive getting shot in the head at point blank range. Surviving 5 shots isnt that hard to believe so if thats all the evidence you need to think someone is a vampire then grab a longsword, some armor, and learn at least a healing spell cuz I have a fetch quest for you.
@@zapman6528 But he also subdued and restrained his attacker til the police arrived. Why they weren't already on the scene for somebody that important I'll never know. But even with 5 fresh bullet holes in him, which were probably aimed at vital organs, he straight up kicked the guy's a**.
@@zapman6528 It wasn't even his bodyguards who beat up the gunman. It was him, personally.
@@evelynzlon9492 have you not seen the police interview with a guy who got shot in the head after two gunmen broke into his house and killed his gf? He was in a police interrogation room for 4 HOURS with a bullet in his head talking and answering question’s until the police officer decided to check the wound after the guy kept complaining of a headache. Adrenaline is a hell of a thing and can account for all these “supernatural” behaviors. The video i mentioned is on youtube. If you cant find it tell me and I’ll give you the video title. 5 bullets in non vital areas wont put down a man flowing with adrenaline. Also depends on the caliber of round used.
I know the world would be more interesting if these supernatural things existed and its hard to accept the mundanity of it all but if you can believe in this and feel inspired to explore the world and its history, then you can find a more grounded reason to spark that same inspiration and change your perspective to enjoy the simple things in life.
Thinking about this, doing all of this is really just slowing down someone determined to find out about what you have been digitally up to. I'd say time is better spent not trying to delete or hide your digital footprint but simply not leaving anymore. Remember it took 5 years to find bin Ladan in a fortified mansion that had phones and computers and even his relatives in it. And that only happened due to a tip-off

I was a fan of the this band back in the day, Mindless self indulgence. They had a rad bassist, her name was Vanessa yt, played for them 1998-2000. The band was a bit underground, but had enough mainstream success that emo kids generally knew who they were. Except with Vanessa. When she left the band, she practically left planet earth. No socials, no connections, nada, zip. No HD images or exists despite numerous video recordings of her performances. I’m not sure how she managed to disappear so completely despite being apart of a band that grew to a pretty decent size, as far as alt music goes. I do have my theories, but I think, knowing what we know now, it was in her best interest to vanish.
Imagine just wanting to be alone and learning new things? Not running from anyone, but getting focus on more positive memory. I don't think in this day in time you can really ever disappear.

I don’t think that we can completely disappear without getting a new ID. Like when I imagine myself, I think my parents can easily access where I went to (lf I cross borders) based on flight records or any other tickets’ data base. If you determined to keep your ID (which I believe will inflame at some point) you have to travel illegally -which is a lot hard work than getting a new ID. And also there’s face recognition and fingerprints which are also in the data bases and even if you can change your face you still have the same fingerprint, which means the moment you get a new passport with your new ID you can still be found..
Years ago we were told to never give our identifying information to strangers on the internet. Today many people attach their face and full name to everything they do online and it's even encouraged. Seems crazy to me.
It truly is crazy
exactly!!!!!!!!!!!! its one thing to be needing an email box address for work / a job for example! or being part of an online student group or have an online library card. its understandable and no photos, and no information about home address or family members, or friends are needed!! but to literally take photographs of yourself and your home and town, and place of work and entertainment and even take videos of yourself with your loved ones and share them with name "tags" and share each an every passing thought and feeling with strangers on daily basis!! cauz let's face it! "friends of friends" are freaking strangers no mater how you look at it!!!!!! why are we willingly putting a surveillance camera on ourselves 24h/7? I don't understand!! is this some kind of advanced "mental control" on the population ? lol
and now here we are today, where we can have a full on conversation with a stranger
This! I remember this being number one rule for sharing information on net when I was in high school. Rule that mysteriously disappeared...

I've pondered running away and starting a new life. The problem that always detours me is the realization that where ever I go...I can't escape me. I mean if I can't solve the issues I face in this life, what makes me think that I can solve them when they arise (and they will) in the new life. I find my time is better spent learning to command control of the life I already have. Not go and create a new one.
It takes many people years in therapy to realise that. :)

Remember that we are the product of our environments. The you that you can't escape can change for the better if you escape. I walked away from everything a few years ago. Absolutely everything. Family, job, possessions, friends, everything. I deactivated the accounts I could and just abandoned everything else. I drove 2000 miles away, sold my car for cash and put my phone in a ECO ATM kiosk, then hitched a ride another 500 miles. When I ran out of cash, I was homeless for around six months. I walked into a temp agency, took a job, got an apartment and eventually a car, quit that job for a better one, and here i am. My past is gone and i got a fresh start. Life is good and I am happy.

Everyone dreams of just disappearing and living in a cabin deep in the woods at some point in their life.
Just the thought gives me inner peace.
it would get old and for some scary at times but yeah it would be pretty peaceful.
Cabin in the woods? Hell no.
I chose a hut along the beach
I seriously considered working at a lighthouse once
i disappeared for the most part and have been living in the woods lol i consider myself an introvert so i’m super happy… but understandable that it may not be for everyone, especially those who constantly need a physical connection to others
My wife and I left downtown Toronto and now live in a house deep in the woods of Nova Scotia. We are in heaven on earth. No mortgage, no debt, no problem!

For me having social media and not having social media is equal
Because no one cares about you in online. If they care about above you they will call you and reach you by any means.
Having sadness, when you are in social media no one messages or follows you and ended in watching reels or short form content.
Better you leave social media. Work on yourself take a selfie and videos save in local memory and journel your progress which is highly valuable.
I need this just because I hate when people find out literally anything about me without my consent.
I don't care who you are or what you are to me, if I don't tell you I don't want you to be able to find out anything about me
or what is called normal privacy.
Don't put everything about yourself on the internet then
I agree. It should always be my choice what other people know about me no matter who they are
which is why I post online with the intention that anyone could read it. If it's not appropriate for everyone to view , don't post it at all.
@@ryzikx same here. I agree.
@@ryzikx but remember other people. You have no control of what other people post like pictures. It might not happen that often but I think that’s what they’re trying to get out as well
Isn't it easier to live a quiet life. Lots of people are quite introverted, don't carry a cell phone, and don't have a big circle of acquaintances. Makes it easier to be somewhat anonymous.

Thank u for this information x
The funniest thing about when I left social media all at once, is how like on 2 people out of the thousands of friends I had checked in. It was also really interesting how everyone just assumed that my life was horrible bc I posted no more. Honestly it's the most peace I've had in years. I've also had some of the most authentic relationships/freindships in years. If it works for some people then cool, & I may go back one day, but it's been nice to actually call people and hang out with people w/o having to post our food, or do anything extra besides connecting.

I think to disappear in the modern world is extremely hard.. I'm not gonna try it but I would like to know how it feels and how it is to just vanish for a bit.
2 random extra things:
1. Wear gloves when possible fo hide your fingerprints.
2. Delete your search history to remove any traces of looking up how to disappear.
Also, you can delete your Gmail account.

I just want to add that you can start all over again without really deleting everything about you on the internet. The internet is nothing without the user so it’s because you give it importance that the internet becomes important to you. In other words deleting all your data will mean nothing if you mentally and emotionally still connected to the old version of you. Starting all over again comes from the inside not the outside
True
good speech :) I tried making a new me lots of times but I mostly failed but after searching about this stuff I discovered that there are only two ways to become a new you: 1- try to embed a new habit or stop a bad habit every 21 days and continue doing that until you are a new you 2- (the faster way yet not gauranteed) is that you take the chance of a dramatic change in your life and use it to make a new you, this change can be moving to college from home, moving to another country, starting a new career etc.
Exactly. Your online data is dependent on logging your updates. Tracking needs some kind of pinging. You can choose any day to stop updating your data. If you stopped using all your smart electronics altogether, for example, there would only exist an outdated version of you online. Any day you choose to just log off and disconnect from social media can do this for you, and you can further this by using anonymity software and tracking blockers. Without the need to throw anything into rivers. Almost, at least.
Don't feed the trackers and they won't know anything about the current you, and then you can be whatever you want.
Maam do u have a podcast that I can subscribe to
It's also my thought. Don't update your social media because deleting it will raise awareness that you are disappearing.

@@A45Productions it's not the conservative nature that i find depressing. It is the slow erosion of individual freedom. From sites that don't allow you to delete your profile, you can always taint your profile by being blacklisted. Either request a chargeback or force them to ban you by doing something against their Terms & Conditions. This ofc means you'll be in their blacklist indefinitely, but your account will no longer exist.
That’s so smart
This is false. Being banned/blacklisted doesn't equal to having your account deleted. Quite the contrary, it is merely locked. In the rare case that your account actually will be deleted you will be notified that your actions have led to the termination of your account.
@@MalhaIIa Nowhere in my statement I claimed the account will be deleted. Once the account is blacklisted, you can't log onto it and you can't find it by binary search. That account goes into a separate database that cannot be accessed by public means.
@@Xgil2Play you claimed that "your account will no longer exist" and what are you on about, the public doesn't have access to accounts. maybe your accounts content, well dooh you should have had that deleted long ago. and anyway mind the wayback machine. traces of your past will always exist, the whole point is to make sure your old self is separate from your new self. good luck when only plastic surgery can truly get the job done. by doing what you suggest you limit the control you have on your past self.
@@MalhaIIa I have the feeling you're just being a pest for the sake of it. If you are met with an Error 404, what does it matter what it used to be there? It doesn't exist now, that's the purpose of the video: to remove the possibility of being found. Once it's blacklisted, it cannot be found.
