  • Teresa Njoroge might be free now, but her name will forever be in our prison system. The mother of two made headlines a decade ago accused of stealing Ksh.19 Million from her employer and faced an additional charge of attempting to defraud the bank Ksh.9.9 Million.
Her daughter was only 3months when the ruling to send Teresa to Langata Women's Prison was made. She had no choice but to raise her daughter in prison
She is our guest on the Lynn Ngugi Show, and this is her story

I was arrested once, some 5yrs ago. It happened in South Africa. I spent almost 9mths on remand and got a suspended sentence. As our sister said, mostly the once that suffer is the poor. Completely true. The pain of spending the whole day in a small overloaded room with some of the most ill disciplined in the world is not easy to put in words. It is there in jail God showed me the kind of person I wasn`t aware of. I went in confused and naive but I came out a better person. This sister`s story is really emotional. I did shed a tear. Yes men cry a lot.

It's shocking the things 'selfish ambition' can do to humanity.
Sometimes we just need to look beyond ourselves and consider or reconsider our choices and decisions in life. The pain and suffering we might cause if only we chose to reconsider.
In the end, whether the perpetrator or victim, when we look beyond 'self' and seek to find what we can do for others, only then can life become better and the world a better place. Until we live for more that 'ourselves', then we can count ourselves blessed and a blessing.
God bless you Teresa. You're indeed a trailblazer and a blessing.

Hello Lynn. Thank you for bringing us such incredible, educative and inspirational stories. This lady’s experience in prison ten years ago in Kenya still demonstrates the current justice system, which is shaped by economic bias all over the world. The rich get richer and get away with criminal offences. Whilst the poor suffer injustice due to the lack of funds. Additionally, it is such a shame that women and children in these prisons have to suffer such inhuman and undignified experiences. Although, prison systems vary in how they are run. For instance, in the UK, children are taken away from there mothers and are left in the care of a parent figure, because the state is aware that the prison environment would have a negative impact on children, emotionally and mentally. Furthermore, women in prison are offered free sanitary and hygiene products at present. However, ten years ago female prisoners relied on their families and friends to bring them sanitary products. I guess that the UK being a developed country makes a huge difference. Regardless, it is significant to ensure that women’s dignity is promoted in prisons all over the world. Please let us know how we can support these women. Thank you!

Well said, I wish the women leaders in government shouldn't take this for granted. They should be the voices of the voiceless women in prison. Instead of parading outside supporting leaders who are after there own personal gains, they should start changing the world of women in prisons. As a man this story has really touched me and I think we should borrow from Western countries, prisons should be another kind of world for the betterment of the society. It should be another possibility to help the vulnerable feel that all is not all but another future is possible. The government should listen to this story and act.

Am Sorry for what you had to go through even though you were innocent from the beginning.
In such Situation, we can only say God wanted to elevate you to a higher position & to serve Him through being the Voice to those voiceless Souls in the Prison. God knew no one else could do that except you & He had no other way than to let you go through that trying & difficult path for you to reach His designated position for you. You are a special Soul, & God used you for a bigger purpose.
I am happy that You have found your calling/Life purpose to serve God through the Women in the prison. Your story is a sad & good one at the same time.

However, as she went on about (15mins or so) I said to myself this woman has been traumatized( this was b4 she talked about the trauma, in part 2). As someone who has experienced trauma you can recognize it in someone else after awhile. She is still healing... She has to remove all the bandages off the wounds, clean the wound and allow the wounds to breath. It will be painful but healing. I can't wait to see where she goes and want she does in life. 🙏🏿

Some accompany their mothers and others are left at home (some end up in the system). These are the kind of stories that need to be heard
