- The Marvels is here and it is yet another disappointment for the MCU. Delivering perhaps the worst Marvel Film to date. Brie Larson is back as Captain Marvel and is joined by Iman Vellani as Ms Marvel and Tenoyah Pariss as Monica Rambeau. Unfortunately, this isn't a triumphant return to form for Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige, instead, it continues the decline of the MCU. We dive in deep into why The Marvels is the MCU's worst film yet.

I kind of feel bad for Tom Hiddleston in all of this. His fiancée was the villain in this movie, which came out on the same day of the Loki season 2 finale. Only one of those projects has been reviewed positively. Got to be a little awkward at home. 😅

@@tatum635 Sadly that's because Season 1 was mediocre at best, with far too much focus on Sylvie. S2 had it's focus on Loki, his character developement, his story and especially in the finale with honestly better looking CGI than the Marvels, lol. But that is what the M-She-U Phase 4 did to Marvel, and only they are to blame.
Give the Loki season 2 guys all the projects and fire everyone that was involved in writing/directing shit like Quantummania and The Marvels, Disney, you're better off that way.
I hate to say it but the actress that played the villain is Tom Hiddleston’s fiancé. I wonder if she would have gotten the role if that wasn’t the case.

Ms Marvel is literally the only few things that was good about this film and I am glad she’s not the problem. There was some potential for this film but like always, Marvel doesn’t want to take any risk or doesn’t have any confidence anymore, this film is proof.

That last statement is the true problem of Marvel at the moment. They had the blueprints for a really good plot about responsability and a lesson about "Never Meet Your Heroes", and at any chance they had they just dropped it and kept going with the tiring "Save the Multiverse" plot. The worse culprit of this is again Captain Marvel, they unintentionally portray her as the worse thing that has happened to this universe with how irresponsible and uncaring she is about the galaxy itself, by either showing how she doesnt helps neither the Kree or the Skrulls when she knows they need the help, for 14 years, or how she completely ignores a problem that she caused, its amazing how they manage to further assasinate a character that barely exists.
Ms marvel is the main reason marvel got disaster hope you understand femikid.
Iman Vellani's energy in every scene was infectious. Best part of the movie by far.

For me, Miss Marvel, Yelena and the new Hawk Eye are the only character that I still find enjoyable in the new roster. Sadly, none of them have a movie planned where they are the main character.
I mean, i personally don't care for the first two, but Kate Bishop at least had a character arc. She trained her whole life because she idolized Hawkeye. She failed, she struggled, she wanted to impress Clint. Only thing i didn't agree with was her beating Kingpin on her own, that was imo just too much, but otherwise i can at least relate to her.
Compare that to instantly perfect She-Hulk or Shuri/Riri and you know why barely anyone can relate to them.

My dad loved captain marvel, and even he thought this movie was too dumb. The last straw for him, the Cats musical song playing over the kittens eating the people. For me, it was the musical number.
It’s almost as if The Marvels was written specifically for the Hanna Montana and Spy Kids audiences. Disney has grabbed the MCU steering wheel and yanked it over to take the Disney Channel exit off the mainstream entertainment highway. They can’t seem to figure out if they want to be a serious screen translation of the Comics or a silly kid-centric knockoff.
I feel so sorry for the girl playing Ms. Marvel. The actress seems like a really likeable person. If her character had been given better material, she could've shined more.

I agree the movie the movie could’ve been better, just wanted to give some context on your Fury point. Secret Invasion was actually supposed to release after this movie pre-Covid. Things got shuffled after Covid hit and we ended up getting Secret Invasion before this, but I’m assuming the implication is this Fury hasn’t gone through Secret Invasion yet, which would explain why he seems completely different. Why they wouldn’t just push Secret Invasion back? I wish I knew

I have more fun watching these reviews than I do seeing the movies. In the middle of the movie I’ll be thinking like I can’t wait to see what CZcams says about this part.
There are still fantastically written films and shows with strong female and male characters that will appeal to both sexes. You just have to shift through the sh!t. Unfortunately, Disney is only looking for crap stories, execrably written to wrap around female characters no one cares about.
But after watching The Marvels and suffering through the IBS caused by it, I watched 1883 and it restored my faith that there ARE good stories with fantastic writing for strong female/male characters that can co-exist and that both sexes can relate to. I dare anyone to watch the first 4 minutes of Episode 1 of 1883 and not want to find out more about Elsa Dutton's story.
Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Sam Elliot give outstanding performances with cameos by Tom Hanks and Billy Bob Thornton. But it is Isabel May as 17 year old Elsa that steals the show. She's not a Mary Sue and you watch her character arc and journey as she takes guidance and grows. She is at the heart of not just 1883, but also all the seasons of the shows 1923 and Yellowstone with Harrison Ford and Kevin Costner.
I do the same thing! Except I skip the part where you waste two hours of your life. CZcams gives me everything I need to know about these terrible dumpster fires. I’m not watching a single minute until someone convinces me it’s worth my time.
I have to push back on one point. Ronin the Accuser was himself a terrible and undeveloped villain. If he were not in the otherwise great Guardians of the Galaxy, HE would be remembered as one of the worst villains of the MCU, and rightly so. He ran like a bitch in the first Captain Marvel movie, and his gender swapped replacement is worse in every way. Also, hammers in battle are primarily used as weapons against armored opponents, and while it might have scored some points on Iron Man or Ultron, no one Ronin or Darbin ever fought would have been weak against a hammer, so their weapon was just a useless prop to be destroyed.
Nick Fury is different because Secret Invasion hasn’t happened yet.

I think I've been in denial over the MCU's decreasing rep for far too long. The Marvels may have just made Quantumania and Secret Invasion look like bangers to me. Deadpool 3, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, Blade, Daredevil: Born Again, Spider-Man 4, and Fantastic 4 all better make a thorough comeback for the MCU or else!

As a wine loving, cat and single woman in her 30s I can say me and my like minded female friend who loved the mcu have no desire to see this movie. Yes I will say the cats and kittens are super cute but that’s not enough to make me watch the film (I have my own at home who is cuter). This is a bomb of a film and I say this as a cat and wine loving single female in their 30s who has never seen barbie but thinks Oppenheimer as the best film of the year.
I like cats a lot though due to circumstances I haven’t had one at home for over ten years. I’ve never wanted to be swallowed whole and intact by a cat and snuggle up somewhere inside it, though. It’s a sort of intimacy I’m just not interested in.

I'm not following your logic. Aladna was briefly mentioned once in a comic and we saw nothing about the planet. Everything in the movie was new except for the name. So why does the name of a random planet from a comic years ago showing up in the Marvels mean it couldn't have been written by AI?
I am so glad someone felt the same way I did while watching this movie. While I was watching it I had the words "embarrassing" and "stupid" circulating in my mind over constantly.
Was it really more 'embarrassing' than Love and Thunder or Quantumania? I hardly think so. This was actually a movie where the main character is 16, so it was supposed to be lighthearted. Somehow I feel like this movie is criticized more harshly because it centers women. Not saying it's perfect, the issues we've been seeing in the past 3 years are there too, but it's far less mortifying than some other recent Marvel projects.
A good way to sport sexist reviews is to observe whether WandaVision is included in the examples of good post-Endgame projects, and as we can see here, the creator went as far as listing GotG 3 before WV as such.

I hated what they did with Nicky Fury too. In phases 1-3 he had a really good balance of serious/dark and comedic. But after that he became a total goofball along with Thor. Secret Invasion fixed that, only to make him more of a comedic character in the Marvels. In the Infinity Saga, his character was better written and more consistent with less appearances, no idea how Marvel could degrade his character by giving him more projects and screentime.

Watching this movie felt like things were just happening. It’s no coincidence that the few moments I enjoyed were all with Kamala and her family. The rest of the movie was just kinda there.
They're so confused after Endgame. What do audiences want? They don't know. How do they provide what audiences didn't know they wanted? Clueless. What makes a good movie? Hopefully this indie director who never made blockbuster entertainment knows that. What do they wanna do with the MCU? They don't know because they didn't plan it out properly. But the brand makes money so they gotta push out content for the cinemas and Disney+ and somehow figure it out along the way, no time for breaks or the execs will be upset!
They knew one thing they wanted to do: have more diverse characters. Diversity obviously isn't a bad thing by itself but the way they did it was disastrous. Most of the characters from the first 3 phrases have been around for decades. It's well known how to write a good Iron Man or Captain America story because people have done it repeatedly. Plus those stories gave them something to adapt. None one knows how to write a memorable Captain Marvel or America Chavez story because no one has ever done it. With Phase 4 Disney in effect set off on it's own to build a Marvel Universe of it's own largely seperate from the legacy characters and badly botched it.
People are saying that they aren't going to blame any of the actresses, but fuck it, hot take: I blame them too.
Actors have some agency in their projects, they don't have to just sit there and act out a shit script and shit screenplay while providing no input. Can they completely change things, no, but they can put some heart into the scene. The same way Henry Cavill said "No. Im not doing that. Geralt wouldnt treat Roach's death as a joke." Then wrote his own dialogue for the scene Dar-Benn's actress couldve said "This character doesnt make sense." Rambaeu's actress couldve said "shouldnt there be more between my character and Carol Danvers?" And Imani couldve said "can i play a teen character from Marvel that people actually like?"
So no. It's on them a bit, too.
And if no one listened to them, pull a Henry Cavill and fucking walk. Say "No. Im not putting my name and face on that."
And seeing how much people like Imani, she'd get work. Brie is supposed to be the new leader so her getting pissy should be something they want to avoid.
Every time i see that clip of the villain walking alone in a mountainous area, she looks like a sci-fi discount Game of Thrones character.
There’s nothing more embarrassing than a person who thinks they’re funny and is just NOT. That’s what watching mcu movies feel like, constantly trying to make you laugh to compensate for how unenjoyable they are.
I don't blame anyone in the cast or the director for this, I think it's safe to say this movie had a fair amount of executive meddling and I get the sense Disney is afraid of letting their directors do the work they were hired to do, for some reason that escapes me. I hope everyone involved in this can go on to better projects where their talents will be more valued.

I want to chime in and say Loki Season 2 is shockingly interesting. It is by far the best and most well-directed project Marvel has done in a long while. It is JARRING and strange that they cannot get their quality consistent across these projects.

Thor losing his mom, Loki and Thor. When you say "You don't know why things are happening" The only thing I can compare this to in my head is Rise of Skywalker. I have ZERO clue what the actual point of that movie was, just running from one forced action scene to the next. Is it really that bad?

What’s weird is the pacing/writing for this film. It literally opens with a scene that has nothing to do with it. After that, we get a very brief recap of the first film before the plot starts. I’m not joking, literally 3 minutes in, the main plot kicks into a high gear and our 3 characters immediately meet. This is not how you do a team up! Take the Avengers, for example. The Avengers took almost an hour before our characters fully come together. It’s not that it’s boring, it’s actually really interesting because it takes it time and slowly raises tension. This movie doesn’t even develop the relationship between our leads! They just meet each other and are like “let’s get to together to do something”. This movie suffers from the runtime!
This movie feels like it’s written by A.I! This just feels like a series of scenes duct taped together by a VERY thin plot. There is literally a scene where Carol is flying in space, then pops up in Kamala’s house to smile at her parents, and appears on the moon to get chased by an army of Kree. We get no context for this scene! Immediately after, the other 2 heroes show up and help Carol immediately. Reminder, this is only like 5 minutes in. The whole movie is scenes like this. A bunch of random mumbo jumbo happening on screen in the matter of seconds to get to the next mindless moment! Garbage movie! Garbage writing! I’ve found a movie worse than the Eternals, She Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Secret Invasion, and Love and Thunder combined!
Glad most people have wisened up to the bait and switch tactics that really got overused by KK's Star Wars first.

I have to tell you - while I haven't seen this film a good number your criticisms of it apply to Loki.
He is trapped in a Doctor Who movie and he is playing 'Dr. Who'.
Has nothing to do with his life or character. At one point he gains power to go wherever he wants in space and time - cuz... (bullshix is why) but he doesn't save Asgard or Odin or Thor....has has *forgotten* about all of them!
He saves...ALL THE ACTORS IN THE LOKI SHOW. rotfl. Of course...we know why he only cares about the characters in this show - who have nothing to do with his life or existence in Asgard. Because these are the characters the writer has to work with! But within the context of the narrative... It just makes no fking sense..
At this point, I just hope Mauler makes an unbridled rage video of the marvels, and you bet your ass I'm gonna binge watch that over and over again.
The funniest part in the movie for me was the CGI tears from Captain Marvel at the most emotional part in the movie. Couldn’t stop laughing that they cgi’d tears.
it is obvious to me that disney has decided to sacrifice Miss marvel to try and save Brie Larson, but it obvious didn't work and the small fun base of Miss marvel won't be enough to save this joke of a movie.

I've still sat and watched Thor The Dark World.
The Marvels was supposed to drop before secret invasions but they kept on pushing it back really but yeah you definitely see the inconsistencies in tone of certain characters that don't make any sense. But there's also a lack of continuity. This film really should've came out like 2 years earlier and should've introduced both Kamala and Monica earlier as well around the same time even if it was a post credit scene. It's been 4 years since Endgame and the first movie and that's way too long of a gap without a significant appearance. To me this movie shouldn't have been a flop, they could've done a whole lot better in my honest opinion. They went away from the formula and now they're paying the price. We should've gotten a new Spider movie as well, no appearance in sight.
That is the difference, they completely lost their "red string"-characters after Endgame. Even if it was just cameos, RDJ, Evans and Hemsworth were in most content after their first introduction. They were the core of the franchise. Who exactly is the core since Phase 4? Every new movie/series seems to introduce a bunch of new characters that hold together like loose sand and we didn't even get an Avengers movie for it.

@@DarkSun123456789 the new strongest avenger is supposed to be Captain Marvel. Spider-Man aka Peter Parker was supposed to be that Tony Stark scientific mind. They were supposed to take over. They build up spider-man to be a leader of the next avengers team. Having Tony as his mentor and someone he looks up to. Tony looked at Peter as a young version of him like a son he never had.
Have captain marvel, spider-man, war machine, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Dr Strange, Ant-Man & Wasp, shuri, and Winter Soldier be the core Avengers team taking care of the major threats.
Then have a young Avengers TV show on the ground holding it down taking care of big threats on their own.
Avengers or other characters regularly showed up in the other solo films during the infinity saga even if it was a post or end credit scene.
They had a structure.

For November I am only interested in The Hunger Games prequel, Napoleon and the Thanksgiving horror film. Gaming Entertainment will make more money right now in films and streaming than Marvel because right now they have new compelling stories for movie lovers. After that famous Anime properties will also bring great new content to films and streaming while also making a lot of money for different studios. Marvel has to be more creative in their stories because every superhero film cannot always be about saving the world. Marvel has to give depth to their characters, add more original compelling stories and show why they are still relevant today with the current day issues that exist. Movie fans are flocking to new franchises which are not predictable and give many surprises.
at this point. Reboot the whole MCU. Say its a new universe. Build off X-Men, fantastic 4, and the avengers that had miles morales. Shit even make Nick Fury white again like he was before the 2000s
