    In this video essay, we break down why the new DCEU film, The Flash, is everything wrong with Hollywood. Starring Ezra Miller, The Flash tells an incredibly messy story with a mix of Nostalgia, cameos, tonal whiplash, and a list of other faults. Although it has moments of greatness, it ultimately is a lesson on how to not make a nostalgia-bait superhero movie. The return of Michael Keaton's Batman wasn't enough to save this one.

    I think the reason why Zod was the villain for the flash is because Henry Cavill was originally supposed to be there. However, since they cut him out, the teams had to redraft their script and everything which sucks.

      To change the actors/resses they wanted. If they made the flashpoint as in the comics and make for example michael keeton play thomas wayne they wouldn't be able to change affleck in the end. Perhaps the plan was to change superman with supergirl as well. I saw somewhere some pictures that it was keeton and supergil who appeared at the end of the flash movie but take it with a grain of salt.

      Because originally they were gonna end this movie replacing both Batman and Superman with their female counterparts to go forward with Wonder Woman as the new trinity...The D She U...
      Thank god as bad as this movie was in parts they ditched that idea... Obviously Batgirl was never in this movie but because they were gonna erase Affleck's Batman... Or leave him stranded in another universe...and then have Keaton stay around to mentor Batgirl that's how she would have come into the picture... Oddly from reports of people who saw the screenings Keaton's only in Batgirl for about ten or fifteen minutes so it was just more nostalgia bait

      The creative industry (not just cinema) absolutely enfasizes ''Originality'' in new works from the time of education, so someone who would actually copy-paste previous stories into film would NEVER advance in his her studies and work. There HAS to be some change, better be a lot of change, ''personal touch'', for the grades and success to come. So no, do not expect a faithful adaptation of x or y, they will (almost) never do it. Let's hope they hire better creatives or the executives let them be good.

      @@isidroundercover that as a whole is the big problem with the DCEU, instead of actually building up the characters and the story line WB wanted to directly "catch up" with MCU and the Avengers team up asap and now multiverse. After Man of Steel they just wanted to throw everything and everyone in without even introducing and exploring the characters properly. I genuinely liked the idea of a darker comic DC universe, but they sacrificed something that could've been potentially actually good and different. But no let's just instantly make BvS and throw WW, mention The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg for the future Justice League without knowing anything about the characters (except WW movie). Let's also do the death of Superman even tho it's literally the 2nd movie in the franchise and resurrect him right after that. WarnerBros wanted the short gain and expected people to cheer them for that while everyone knew they are trying to make a cheap catch up with Marvel.
      In my language there is a saying "cooking a soup with grapes" which basically means throwing everything in something even if it doesn't make sense to be there expecting to be good. This is basically what WB did and they did it again with The Flash.

    I don't really look at Zodd as the villain of the film and I don't think the film did either. In a way, Barry becomes his own antagonist. Zodd showing up to me felt like they needed someone formidable to create another scenario where Barry needs to learn to finally let go -- which was the repeated deaths of Batman and Supergirl -- something he learns through seeing Barry-2 not being able to let go. Also, and this is just speculation, it may also be a way to maybe address something that people have kinda asked about with regards to Man of Steel: where were the other metahumans when Zodd attacked Metropolis? I think it's a nice touch to look into Barry's failure when he started off, and the film does touch on how Barry tries to do good and fails at it, or that he fails to recognise that some things are beyond him and he can't fix everything i.e. his mother dying, his dad staying in prison, and how his company conducts their forensic investigations.

      The story might have been better if the dark flash appeared more and had the vibe of being the true actual antagonist and zod is basically the obstacle barry cannot overcome and dark flash stops him from going back in time to fix his mistake. Like the movie spent like an hour saying zod is the problem completely forgetting the being that punch barry out of the speed force at a time period way before his time. The movie had no true actual antagonist since basically barry was his own antagonist but it was never shown visually with scenes.

    • @Susanoo7108
      @Susanoo7108 Před rokem +1

      @johnwinchesterp2963 I get what you're saying, but the problem there is that Dark Flash needs Barry to get stuck in the past in order to get him to train and give his younger self (Barry-2, who's Dark Flash's younger self) his powers. You also have to consider the fact that Barry-2's timeline is in trouble due to no Superman being there and going back in time won't stop Zodd's invasion in this timeline that he's created, hence why Barry even tries to stop Zodd: to fix his a mistake he may not have the solution to, which ties back around to the big lesson he has to learn.

    • @johnwinchesterp2963
      @johnwinchesterp2963 Před rokem +1

      @@Susanoo7108 Yeah I meant it in a way to have dark flash loom in the shadows and perhaps try to stop them from going through certain routes to make sure he is created. You know something to make the viewers feel his presence wondering who is he and wondering why isn't he attacking barry when he can and then the viewers realize that he needed barry to teach his past self how to time travel for the dark flash to be created. Keep zod since practically he is the first big threat earth faced so it would make sense for the flash to deal with the mess now that he changed the timeline but put the dark flash in certain scenes to make the viewers remember him instead of appearing once at the first 30 minutes of the movie and once towards the end.

The beginning of the movie felt like a bit cringy, watching Ezra play the character, but the dynamic of the two Barry’s ended up redeeming things to some degree. The DC movie makers needed a scary, “unstoppable”, ALREADY ESTABLISHED menace to throw against our time-travelling Flash. At nearly 2 ½ hours long, this movie DIDN’T HAVE TIME to introduce and flesh-out a NEW, “unstoppable” menace (like Professor Zoom/“Reverse Flash”). For the sake of brevity, they needed someone the audience would IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZE…so it was either General Zod, or that CGI flunky, “Steppenwolf”.

    No Way Home hit a homerun because it was FIXING the nonsense of all 3 franchises. Raimi's Spiderman 3 was a pretty lame way to go out for McGuire's Spiderman. The Garfield movies were not really good either, (the 2nd one was terrible). And Holland's spidey had too much Marvel Universe nonsense.
    No Way Home: REALLY fixed Garfield's Spidey's open wound. This is the BEST part of the film. It gave McGuire's Spidey a chance to redeem his villains (which were his mentors, which is why this is so important), and it removed all the bull shait from Holland's version, and cleaned up his Spidey to literally be a clean slate, without the Marvel anchor tied around him.
    Flash could have so easily done that. But who are the characters they need to fix? SUPERMAN, and to some degree Batman. This movie could have been the Back to the Future version of Man of Steel 2. Flash effs things up, he has to fix them. He changes the timeline so that both Superman and Supergirl work together and defeat Zod, this time working with Batman as well to help Metropolis NOT get completely flattened. Such a wasted opportunity, just because they had some kind of a beef with Cavil.

For me, No Way Home was a completion, of sorts, of Toby's and Andrew's stories. Without them, the Peter Parker's story couldn't have happened. Replace them with other actors and the film would have lost no box office, however odd a decision it would have seemed.
    Contrariwise, without Michael Keaton in The Flash, nothing would have needed to be changed. Anyone in a bat-costume would have worked just as well but the box office would have been ten per cent lower.

Like you said, Keaton's Batman/Bruce was just in the wrong movie because he's a serious character while this movie is far from serious. And the way they incorporated his iconic lines from the '89 film were cringe. I really didn't find anything standout or special about Kara other than there was never a moment where I cringed at her character, which is a very low bar for a character actually being good. A lot of her scenes were terrible CGI fight scenes, but just because the writers didn't make her another woke girlboss doesn't mean she's automatically a well-written or acted character. Something like Fast 9 or Black Adam would've been a better example IMO... the storyline for those movies doesn't require much/any thought and the films focus heavily on action scenes
      Even Extraction fits (the first, haven't seen 2 yet)...

    I’m still trying to figure out how Zod stabbed Kara? 🤔🤯. Superman can’t be stabbed… weakened state or not. No Kryptonite. Why does he run like he’s on rollerblades? 😣

    It's not you, I promise. With all the major DC and Marvel influencers supporting this film before it was released to the public, the hype machine is very suspect. I think this is either a new form of payola, or big sub influencers have been warned they will lose access to DC productions which is owned by the WB. (this studio has a history of blocking or demonetizing content that criticizes their films if they use clips). Either way, I don't trust any channel that supported this film as one of the best of it's genre. This was ill-conceived from conception to post production - just a hot mess. Many influencers are back-tracking now to save face, but they still blame low box office on things like CGI being rushed in production - which was just one of the many flaws. Almost seems like they got the same notes from the studio on how they can criticize this film.

    Bro, the only valid point you had was "bad" cgi. Truth is, it really wasn't that bad. In slow motion, things can look distorted and weird. It was intentional. And the cameos, they had their reasons. It fit in that specific scene. Of course, it was weird cgi. It was intentional. The rest was you just hating. Nostalgia and cheap blah blah....how you gonna say for a cheap buck when it was really expensive to make that movie and because marvel fans exist they didn't watch it making it bomb at the box office.

      @movieoverload yes, it's a super action movie. It's not for the comic readers but for people who enjoy action movies. Oh, betrays the film story? Really? Are u forgetting this universe had Zod almost destroyed the world. This universe didn't just have flash but a lot of other super heros.

    The movie existed to prove this point, flash is the avatar for the audience, and the lesson is we all have to learn to let go, affleck had already accepted his reality, keaton was fine having served his time and finished his mission. It took barry seeing friends die multiple times trying to help before he realized, sometimes you just gotta accept that you arent in control of everything. Hopefully snyderverse fans learned the same lesson and wont start another petition. Have your nostalgia, but understand change is inevitable, time always brings change.
