2022 Royal Enfield Interceptor Review. Better Than A Bonneville? A 650cc Modern Classic Motorcycle.

- čas přidán 13. 02. 2022
- We review the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 Motorcycle and ascertain how good it is.
We go into detail about how the bike rides, handles, stops, and looks as well as giving you the pertinent specifications, but related to the experience of HOW that feels when riding this highly popular Modern Classic Motorcycle.
Is it better than a Triumph Bonneville? We find out. Hopefully soon we will be able to compare it to the new 2022 BSA Gold Star when we review that!
And we forgot to mention that it can be ridden on an A2 motorcycle license (which applies in the EU and UK)!
Made in India and designed in the UK, in Bruntingthorpe England, could this bike be a relic from the past or a gem?
NOTE - I realised after filming that I misunderstood the meaning of the word 'simplistic' - I meant to say 'simple' and use the word as a positive. Please mentally insert 'simple' in its place. I am clearly simple too!
We ride it in the scenic countryside in North Wales and in this video review, you can see exactly what the motorbike is like. We look at the engine, gears, clutch, brakes, suspension, exhaust and you can really hear how it sounds! Is it too small for taller riders? Who would fit perfectly? Is it good for shorter riders? How heavy is it? What could be improved?
We give you the figures for power, torque, fuel economy, petrol tank capacity and price in the UK.

@@MrDarcy-OlMan your review is what made me buy a Interceptor 650 In Bakers express, down here in Australia 👍
@@CrypticUnlock I hope it lives up to expectations. I can’t imagine it wouldn’t 👍🏼
Would be hieght for me.
Be great if i could afford it.
Great bike the Interceptor isn't it - so glad you rated it so highly....great value machine in terms of smiles per £££. Really enjoyed the video, thanks for taking the time to bring it to us!
Thanks buddy. Your Interceptor is stunning! (shame about the hassle you had though!)
@@MrDarcy-OlMan Thank you - appreciate that!
Just thinking about the flyers exspirence,,definitely changed the complexion,,,✌

@TheMissendenFlyer good on you TMF 👏
A pure riders bike, no gadgets or modes! Must say the riding sequences were some of the best footage of a bike being test ridden I've seen in a VERY long time, well done there, you managed to show the bike at it's best, thamk you for that. Keep up the great vlogs.
Thanks buddy! Yes absolutely. That’s a great description of the bike 💯
The riding footage is awesome and do yourself a favour and listen to it with headphones on. Aural bliss!
@@andrewbosman2883 Thanks very much 👍🏼👍🏼
“Adventure bikes are absolutely hideous looking.” 100% true.
I bought a 2020 model, couldn't be happier with it. I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina USA and she handles the hairpins with ease. Excellent review!
Awesome! Thanks very much 👍🏼
Had my Interceptor for a year and a half now and I love it. Over 13000 miles now of pure smiles sure I may get a bike with a bit more power but I would still keep it. A very easy bike to do your own servicing which I do and endless customizations are possible even making it a 865 cc with the big bore kit. Cheers Mate
Awesome. Yes it’s simplicity and purity make it so good
Absolutely an outstanding video - review. The cinematography and audio qualities are truly superb, and you sir are a cool dude, it was a real pleasure to watch. I live in the US, and ordered a RE Interceptor and am anxiously awaiting it's arrival. I'm 55 and it's going to be my first rode bike. Here in the states we don't think a bike is good, unless it's at least 1200 CC's and weights 650 pounds or more, such gluten. I really dig the looks and the vive of classic looking motorcycles . I'm a nonconformist , never follow trends, and like to be an individual anyway. Love the bike, and loved your review. Hands down the best review of this bike. Keep up the good work .
Thanks buddy. That’s really nice of you to say 🙏 From one non conformist to another 💯
Excellent review of a Great Bike review by Mr Darcy. I own a Enfield Meteor 350 - Now I am thinking of getting the interceptor.
@@TRRamesh awesome 💯
They are awesome.
Bruce Duty, you are soo going to love your RE when it arrives. I am the proud owner of one here in Blighty. Previously I have had three HDs. All superb motorcycles (absolutely love them and will not listen to a bad word about them), but on a pound for pound FUN factor.....the Interceptor nails it....at least on our UK roads. I'm sure it will on yours.
Monsieur Darcy and the Old Chap always produce fantastic vids as you say. Informative, relevant and very pleasant and relaxing viewing.
Enjoy your new RE. "Built Like A Gun" old boy!!
That's the exact same thing I thought when I first hopped on. It does everything right; stays cool, no vibrations, good torque and good power all the way to redline. And then once I figured out I had 6th I lost my mind 😂
Have been using interceptor for past 2.6 Years have done around 22K Kms and have changed airfilter and exhausts to make it lighter and faster.
Absolutely wonderful bike worth every penny we spend on it .
If you have this bike in mind just go a head and buy it
Totally 👍🏼👍🏼💯
Bought mine yesterday in the "sunset strip" variation and couldn't be more pleased. Coming home from the dealership I rode 100 miles before I could bring myself to park. Cheers from Phoenix Arizona!
Fantastic 👍🏼👍🏼💯
You captured the exhaust note beautifully! The Interceptor has got classic looks, it's great value for money and epitomises the pure joy of motorcycling. It's about savouring the ride instead of flying from A to B in the shortest possible time. It's clear to see why it's such a best-seller.
Thanks buddy. Yes absolutely 💯
Forget the price, I think this is one of the most beautiful motorcycles ever made. And being a classic, it will look beautiful even 30 years from now. Great review mate!
Yes definitely. Thanks buddy 👍🏼👍🏼
Great review , I first rode a mates 650 Bonneville back about 20 years ago & fell in love, I had a triumph for ten years when it was time to upgrade the interceptor was just coming out in 2019. I took one for a test ride & bought on the the spot. I have had the bike for 3 years & I love it more each time I ride it. I watched tech bike parts on how to service it & have done all my own servicing about $100 Australian dollars a year oil & filter , we go for a150 k ride each week & costs me $10 , do about 70ks around town in a week costs $5 .Awesome bike . Ill never sell it. Had no trouble in 3 years. Have pipes & air filter upgrade.
Fabulous. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼👍🏼
I have drove this bike 80,000 km just changed clutch plates set , tyre set and a chain set. And other services parts like brakes and all. I can say this is such a reliable bike in my case. ❣️❣️
Excellent! Thank you 💯
what is the fuel efficiency that you are getting on long rides?
You're like the David Attenborough of bike reviews.
Thanks very much 👍🏼👍🏼
Hey man, I admire your work too much, this bike is a monster on the roads, its torque is fantastic, I must admit that it is the most fun Royal Enfield bike, greetings from Medellin, Colombia🤘🏻
Aye mate I’m 6’5”! I live in Florida and let me tell you. I absolutely love this bike. I’ll never sell it. People are always askin what it is! For us tall boys we need tall seats! Keep up the good work mate!

Great review👍thank you for sharing
Awesome. Lovely bikes indeed 💯
I have looked at many other bikes and still can not fall out of love w/ this bike.
I have been riding motorcycles for 53 years and have owned many makes and modles some costing many thousands of pounds but the Royal enfield interceptor is my go to bike hand on heart its my favourite bike of all time ,if you are thinking of buying one of these get a test ride you wont be dissapointed, great review very honest and accurate keep up the good work.
Thanks John. Great to hear 👍🏼
“It looks small but it feels good.” Coffee came out of my nose with that one!
Lmao!😂😂😆🤣
Another brilliant review, I wish you’d stop making me want another bike.. or do I !
Haha thanks 👍🏼👍🏼
I compare my Enfield 650 to Triumph Bonnevilles every day with two 2012's (SE mag-wheel and Thruxton 900) all 3 air/oil cooled. Also have a Bonneville Speed Twin 1200cc but must say the R.E. gets all the attention; it is the newest of the 4 and has 34,000 kms, more usage than the 3 Triumphs' total. With a 2 into 2 stainless exhaust and a few tweaks (S&S big bore kit) the R.E. is less than 200 kg and falls between the 900's and the Speed Twin performance-wise. They are a marvelous machine; smooth and durable.
Great comments; thank you 👍🏼👍🏼
Big bore kit is not "a few tweaks" - presumably you've had to add an ECU re-map device with dyno time etc..
I love mine. Fast enough to thrash silly without getting into trouble, customising parts are cheap and it's as mechanically complex as a hammer. Looks great too.
Absolutely 💯👍🏼
I pick mine up this Friday. Venture blue. First ride will be a 90 mile ride home from the dealership.
I'm 6'5" and love my Interceptor. Dropped the pegs and made all the difference. Last bike was a '57 Trophy, and the RE has most of the character, all the fun and none of the drawbacks. It's just great fun - full stop.
Excellent! 💯👍🏼
Was there an adjustment for the pegs or did you modify them? My old Norton 850 used ductile iron and said you could heat and bend them without causing any problems.
@@jimsperlakis5634 they're from TEC - lots of adjustment in all directions and a significant visual improvement on one of the very 'cheap' looking parts of the bike. I don't think he metal is as malleable as the old brits - my '57 trophy and Velo Mac could be generally 'coaxed' by heat too!
Excellent review Sir! You hit the Interceptor 'nail on the head' so to speak...it's a classic motorbike feel with modern reliability. And you also used a word that is not heard around here...'Caning'....and in that word you have captured the essence of motorcycling for me. Having a bike that is fast enough....but not so fast that you can't 'Cane' it about....wonderful. I have a 1000cc Suzuki SV which is fast enough that you can't give it full throttle for more than a second or two and you're over 100mph...which IS fun in and of itself, but you don't get the joy of wicking the throttle and giving the bike it's head to go as it will. The old saying 'It's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow' rings true.
With minor tweaking the 650 Interceptor can be made quite a bit quicker...pipes, air filter and tune and it's into the mid 50's HP's which is plenty sprightly for a Classic British Twin. The suspension is also fine as stock but can be improved as you get on with the bike. I LOVE this factor about the RE's....good enough stock, but as time goes on you can gradually improve it so you get a 'new' bike many times over. I do mods every winter so in the spring I have a 'new' bike. :) Thank you for an entertaining review and I subbed for more of your content.
Thanks very much! Yes you completely get what I was trying to get over. Very good points too 💯👍🏼 And welcome aboard
Great points! Exactly what i think!👍🏻
Greetings from Brazil. I bought my Interceptor 650 two years ago, and I love my bike. Very nice and easy to ride, commuting or cornering in twisties. Listening to your video's exhaust sound brought a me big smile! Thank you!
I've had an Interceptor for 9 months and about 2,400 miles. I'm still happy with it. It checks quite a few boxes for me: it looks great, sounds great, great gas mileage (about 55-60mpg) handles well, lots of aftermarket stuff. It'll cruise all day at 75mph no problem. Power and torque are plenty for most purposes. The six-speed gearbox is nice. The brakes work fine, the ergonomics are fine. It has a likeable personality.
But it's not a bike I'd want to ride to Alaska on. Or even 200 miles. The reason being that the suspension and seat are stiff and kind of cobby. Around town it's fine but it wouldn't be fun riding it all day long. That and the right mirror vibrates; and it's hard to impossible to read the digital dial in bright sunlight. Those are my only complaints.
I have the continental Gt and loving it..glad we still have simplicity in today's digital world. Splendid 👍
Thanks, we’re reviewing the continental gt very soon!
I own a Chrome Interceptor and I feel really good about my Inty after watching this review
Absolutely brilliant review, blimey. Thank you so much, mate
Thanks for the review. Have been considering this for a while and viewed one today. Your review has confirmed that this is the bike for me!
Brilliant video. Thanks for the concise details. Cheers.
Loved every bit of this wonderful review. Just booked my interceptor 650.
I bought a new interceptor 4 weeks ago, i chose to wait until march 1st for the '22' reg plate..bike was in stock at Holywood RE Dumfries as were the full range of colours..I actually went in to buy the downtown drag, but the red took my eye with it's deep lustre..the wait is killing me 🤣
I already have a set of Lancashire UK made Maxtorque cans at home ready and waiting for fitment (beautifully made, well packaged and look top shelf quality) after the first service or maybe 600 miles in..after 32 yrs of riding bikes, sports and big ADV, I got bored with all the bigger cc the better bullsh*t, and bought a 2021 RE Himalayan, love it! really enjoying the chilled out riding experience on a truly soulful bike..I just know i am going to love the Interceptor too. RE make quality bikes at a very reasonable price (with 3 year unlimited mileage warranty inc breakdown recovery) and are still cheaper to buy new than second hand main stream brands..sorry for waffling on, but i am now a RE fanboy 🙄
Spot on and brill review btw 👍😄
Thanks buddy. Great to hear! I know you’ll love it! 💯
my first bike in India was bullet royal enfield and i still love royal; enfield my heart is on this interceptor its just good old real motorcycle no frills. You summed up really well keep it up.

I'm pretty sure I've rewatched this over 2 dozen times. Well done!

Got myself a orange one down here in Brazil. Gotta say it feels as you described, and it looks amazing.
Great work. I have been wanting to add an Interceptor to my 2020 Trials 500 & this makes me want one for sure. Thank you for the review.
It is in fact the best review I have heard of my bike 🏍️
Always appreciate your knowledge, experience and willingness to say what you really think. 👍
Thanks buddy
Proud owner of a 2019 Interceptor. Good thing about the bike is that you have to work the bike hard to get the most out of it. Especially in the corners where it doesn't want to lean. When you make it do things the way you want, you already know you're an expert rider. It pleases both the new riders as well as the old experienced riders. I enjoy every kilometre I ride.
Great review, thanks!
Thank you. Yes it really rewards the rider 💯
Thanks for a great honest unbiased review!
I’m glad to see more and more coming into the US. Cheers!
I can understand why you favor this bike over the Bonneville. It provides a bit of raw riding experience with simple back to basic features, however for me the Bonneville build quality and power is that much better. As far as price I'd rather go with a 6 year old aircooled Bonneville at the same price .
Fair enough, yes. Gotta keep Triumph on their toes!
Excellent review. I'm 6' 3 tall and find its still comfortable to ride. I travel to work 70 miles round trip and love the feel and sound ripping on Country roads.
Thanks buddy. Excellent 💯
Great review of an excellent bike! Also: what a nice house and view you have! 🤙🏻
Thank you 👍🏼👍🏼
Your mic setup is awesome. No wind noise, all of the exhaust sound. Brilliant video!
Thanks very much 👍🏼
Glad you feel the same way I did after doing a demo ride. The control rider and I were having a blast pinning these things through the corners. So much fun!!
Absolutely! 💯
I love it, I want one just like that one! Perfect motorcycle and lots of nice features. Looks great as the man says, " enjoy the ride " I ride every day weather permitting in S/E Michigan. What a beauty and thank you for sharing J.

Excellent review Mr Darcy. Thankyou.
Best review of any bike EVER! This man is my new go to for reviews. Can't emphasise enough how much I enjoyed watching this!
The great thing about this bike is you can change almost everything on it if you really want to without breaking the bank. Motone and Tec have a vast selection of parts to upgrade or customise this bike....
Absolutely 💯
I chose an interceptor over a Street Twin last year, and am really pleased that I did. Great video, thanks!
OK great! 💯👍🏼

A great review. Very informative. The scenery was wonderful. Thank you.

The phrase, “less is more”, genuinely applies to the Interceptor 650. I have a little YT channel, whereby I take mine along some stunningly scenic locations in the north of England. Your review totally captures what the Interceptor is all about. Even though I have owned mine for two years, I found your review to be excellent. Thanks and well done !
Thanks very much! Great to hear your feedback 👍🏼👍🏼
@@MrDarcy-OlMan ps, I spent my childhood helping my uncle on his sheep farm above Bontddu (Dolgellau-Barmouth road). Very envious, you have the ideal life.

With gas prices being so high and all, and being retired and only working 2 days a week, I've decided to park my gas guzzler and get back on a bike. I definitely don't want to spend too much, so I've been looking at the Royal Enfield for a while, especially the Interceptor 650. This video has pushed me to go with it. Great video with excellent presentation.
Thank you for this honest an awesome video. I’m leaning towards getting one of these beasts.
Just wanted to say really enjoy your reviews! Keep it going 👍🏼
Thanks very much 👍🏼👍🏼
shots of your driving in the countryside were so satisfying to watch. You were controlling the throttle at exact times when I imagined I would do, for example before uphill, blind corners, or gravel. Thank you for making me feel as if I am riding.
Thanks very much 👍🏼👍🏼
This channel is going to make me spend some money. After selling my bike last year, I'm now getting an itchy wallet, especially after watching this review of the R E Interceptor. These reviews seem from the heart, without any stupid music, and are of the highest quality. Subscribed after falling upon them. Keep up the great work.
Much appreciated. Welcome aboard 👍🏼👍🏼
Love this. What a great review.
Another brilliantly produced bike review, well done guys! You managed to capture both the footage and the audio of the exhaust note.
Thanks buddy 💯
Great review, I agree that there’s something about a basic bike like the Interceptor that brings motorcycling back where it belongs, affordable and fun. I had not started to read books until 2 years ago. I have read about a dozen since and am speeding up steadily. With so much rubbish on telly I would not much rather read a good novel.
Thanks buddy. Yea agreed.
Yes telly isn’t nearly as good as it was in the 1970’s
Excellent. I think this was a very good review. Many thanks for standing out in the cold to bring it to us.
Thanks very much indeed 👍🏼👍🏼
I've been thinking for a while this would be the perfect bike for the sort of riding I do these days. I had a test ride today and came back convinced enough to order one. Thanks for the review - it helped loads.
Excellent! Great choice 👍🏼👍🏼
Luv you guys reviews. Pretty much sold me on getting one of these for my first bike
Thanks very much. It’s an awesome bike 👍🏼👍🏼
Really happy that someone does simple bikes with beautiful classic shape, and without electronics everywhere.
Seems like a great bike and will not ruin your budget also.
Sound great even without any mods applied.
Not to powerful and not to underpowered also.
I would maybe add some sacks for longer trips.

What a legend..both you and bike. Such a interesting review, telling us about details and everything we need to know about bike. That breaking skills are amazing, stunning countryside, great stock sound and you with your own old school style just make a prefect couple. This bike has character and i belive it requires character to be riden as well. Great work man and i hope you get more views this is really first time i watched your video. Others follow similar pattern with reviews with specs, sound and test ride feeling but you just bring it on as it comes, as it would come to rider looking at it for first time. So yea long comment sorry but really i can tell you did this video with passion, love and soul and i think thats amazing. Stay amazing and ride safe.
Thanks buddy. Thats a really nice comment 👍🏼🙏
Recently narrowed my new bike search down to the Interceptor and the CB500X. On paper, not exactly competitors, but they were comparable in many areas (power, mileage, price) and both seem to get universal praise. Finally got to test ride both today. The Honda is a Honda. Does exactly what you expect, no more no less, and I really can't fault it for anything other than just being a bit vanilla. I very nearly pulled the trigger but I had to try the Interceptor first, and after doing so I don't even consider it a contest. The Interceptor just feels so analog, so...alive. I've heard all the reviews talking about the leaps and bounds Enfield have made in recent years, but getting on one just boggles the mind in terms of refinement.
And, for what it's worth, I've seen a few people say that they don't think the Interceptor is great for tall riders. I'm 6'7" and my feet/leg position was absolutely perfect. The only change I plan to make when I get mine is a set of bar risers so I'm not leaned quite so far forward.
Excellent! Yea it’s everything you say 💯
Thanks Ol, great review in every sense, one of your best. As a retro fan very much looking forward to your BSA test,. All best
Thanks buddy. A great bike! 👍🏼👍🏼
Just bought one of these as my second bike in Thailand. I really love it after 500 kms. Mine is a 2019 with 15000 kms and I will have to change the seat and maybe raise the bars a bit. It is a great bike overall and I would like to take my time and enjoy the journey before changing much else. Keep up the good work
Hello, My Interceptor 650 is probably the closest riding sensation you could get to my old 1981 Triumph Meriden 650cc Thunderbird (should never have sold it) for a modern motorcycle. Easy to get to bits of the bike to work on. Lovely engine, spot on fueling for a bike with fuel injection, comfy - well for me anyway, lighter than my Mag wheel 865cc Bonneville (would have kept if I could and had two bikes)
Classic styling, 70+ mpg all at a very good price.
Yes indeed! I’ve sold a few things I wish I’d kept over the years too! 👍🏼👍🏼
Best bike review I've seen in the last 3 years
Wow thank you very much! Hope you’re subscribed 😁
Excellent, as always. Your reviews are so confident and conversational. I'm seriously considering the Sunset Strip version. Seeing you not look ridiculous on it at 6'2", I could get away with it at 6'1" (and shrinking... lol).
The more you relax in front of the camera the better the video’s get, less stiff. That was a very enjoyable watch. 👌
Thanks buddy 👍🏼
I saw a guy out on the road on one, with the orange metallic tank and it looked the utter business.Gorgeous bike👍
Great honest review
Great resume, good job!
Love listening to this, you should do a podcast about bikes, great voice for it :)
Being 6ft 3" I found its the only royal enfield I was comfortable on and didn't look oversized on
I did a demo ride on one on Saturday, I'm 6'2 and I actually found this bike more cramped than the Classic/Meteor 350s and my Himalayan! Also I found the engine cases got in the way of my boots which I've never experienced before. It reminded me most of the 90s Honda CB400SF I owned or a '97 CB500 that I rode, similar power, weight and riding position.
“It looks small but feels nice…” cracked me up 😂👍 Great review as always.
Haha I surprised myself! 👍🏼👍🏼
Backing off as you approach the crest of every hill, of every blind corner. I like the way you ride... not outrunning your eyesight.
A riding lesson and an in-depth review to boot!
Thanks John. Yes absolutely! You never know whats round the next bend!
Very good review. Balanced and informative . Love the scenery too.
Thanks very much!
Beautiful review, beautiful shots, beautiful bike.
