  • Utsuri.
Utsuri is a metallurgical effect. It is said to be found mostly on quality Kamakura and Nambokucho period blades. Rare on Shinto and Gendai blades. I put a lot of effort into finding techniques for creating utsuri. It turned out that it is not difficult to create it. One only needs to think about the differences in the way swords were made in the Koto and Shinto periods. Also in the methods of obtaining steel, which is probably essential.
I polished a quick window on the new blade. It's not a full polish. Only about 60 minutes. work to uncover the quality of steel and hataraki. The blade was experimental work aimed at creating utsuri. It's not good to dwell on it too much. To occupy the mind by creating shadows. The concentration in my opinion should be on making a good steel and blade. However, the combination of both pleases the katana kaji's eyes.
On this blade is hamon suguha with many activities, ashi, sunagashi, kinsen. Boshi is ko-maru. There are three levels of utsuri above the hamon line. The first is a dark bo-utsuri, about 5mm wide. The second is about 1cm wide bo-nie-utsuri. In this case it is very prominent. Above it is the midare choji utsuri, a less pronounced dark shadow reaching about 1cm below the edge of the back.
I think this is a beautiful example of steel's ability to create different metallurgical structures. A demonstration of the beauty of steel.
