Excellent! Have a summertime RV with wood stairs. My girlfriend just fractured here leg, and needs a railing for a few stairs. The original stairs were home made by the previous owner, and a mix of various woods, so 2x4’s seemed the perfect option. Your Video showed me exactly what I need to do, including notching out the step. Well done, and I will do it with your tips in mind this weekend. Thank you
I like this video! Especially due to how well it makes a seemingly and potentially difficult task easy enough for most anyone to understand. My compliments, very well done!!! The fact that there's no other technical BS (like building codes) to complicate things and still 100% code complient due to this application. Awesome!!! Nicely Done!!!
Last year my wife shattered her wrist (been a hard year). Now she wants a railing on the porch stairs. Thanks so much for the video. I just built a railing for her she is over the top. "CHEERS"
Thank you very much! I need to build some rails here at my house for my father in law. He needs to hold on to something while he goes up and down the stairs.
Hey came across. Thank you so much for posting this. It helped me a lot. Really appreciate this. Gives us an idea as to how to add a railing without having to dig up for a post. Thanks once again.
thanks! I just put in a hand railing and it really sucks. Now I know what I did wrong and know how to fix it! You just saved me a ton of cash hiring someone else. Thanks man!
@@maxflight1000 no, it isn't code compliant. A 2x4 rail laid flat is not considered "graspable" and he said the "slats" are 5" apart... they need to be spaced less than 4" apart....
i used no.1 cedar 2x4x8 (yeah 18 bucks @ piece at lowes) only needed 4, hit them with some urethane, look great if i say so myself! thanks! great video
what boards did you use for the horizontal and vertical part of the stair stringers? are the 2x4 or 2x6s..thanks..and awesome presentation..I will be referring to this video ..for my 2x4 install on the stair rails...and thanks again..God Bless.
Use your level with the length you need marked on your level , put the mark on a piece of masking tape if ya don't want a mark on your level. When measuring your top rail it will be very accurate rather than using your tape measure which is nearly always not plumb when measuring freehand.
I also would have raised the bottom support off of the stairs by 2". That didn't look like pressure treated lumber either. You should use pressure treated lumber and treat every cut with a water sealer.
@@roughnecklifer regular spf framing lumber ! Should have used treated for whole project. Cost is pennies more but right way to do it. This choice makes me crazy. Dont care how you finish it , still not right.
Funny how the “experts” commenting are watching this video in the first place buy this buy that do this do that not all of us have that extra money but have 2x4s lying around easiest best video I found so far to add to an existing step👏👏🙂
It looks really good. Clean appearance and good proportions. My one concern would be longevity. I like the look of this conventional wood better, but i think it would last longer if made from pressure treated wood. Your thoughts?
just watched this video and plan to follow your tips to make a rail for my son's deck steps. My 90 yr old mother in law just moved in with him and we need to add a wheelchair ramp. do yoy have a video for that?
Love the video! Do you happen to have any videos on how to to the top railing on a deck? Specifically how to make to join to straight pieces on a long run?
Looks good ! As others have said " a ball 4-3/8 cannot pass through the balusters"...darn those toddlers heads! Doesn't stop them from putting Lego's in their ears, nose, mouth etc though ! How did we ever survive childhood ? At least we don't have cobra's like the Philippines ! Don't get me going about "code" in Philippines buildings...ever look over an escalator railing and almost break your neck hitting a ceiling ?? It could happen there !
I have a question. In the beginning you said you want the handrail 36 inches above your steps. But then you measure 32 inches to make your cut height . can you please explain? gonna try this tomorrow
The screw holes starting splitting and now I have a loose handrail. Does anyone know how I can reinforce it without having to replace the entire side panel?
Dig a post hole adjacent to the front 2x4 post. Put a 4x4 in it and about a bag of concrete to anchor it. Screw the front post to the 4x4. Also always drill pilot holes.
simple, cheap, and neat. However it doesn't meet code! Spacing between vertical slats can not let a 4" diameter sphere (child's head) pass through. 5" spacing is too wide. Also the hand grip part ...a 2x4 laid across another 2x4.....does not meet code requirements. Sorry to rain on your very clear video demonstration.
I know this video was made back in 2016, but today's stair codes do not allow you to build it this way anymore. Be sure to consult a current copy of your locations code if that is a concern for you.
You have to have a graspable handrail. Perhaps a separate handrail was added after. The vertical 2x4 used at the bottom instead of a 4x4 post is not blocked in the framing properly and does not use the correct type of fasteners. It will work fine the way he did it. Just would not pass inspection in most places. @@marcogeraldis7117
@@sethd1125 Im actual doing a handrail kinda similar to this now and because the deck isn't high enough of the ground no codes were really looked at. More so just a perimeter was needed.
Ima go for it. On my way to home depot to get started on mine. Yes on a sunday😅
Just built my deck rail! Turned out great!! Thank you!

Yes so a kid cannot get their head stuck between the slats. It does happen my brother did it when he was three yrs old
@@johnschumann2627 Ideal 3.75" spacing for slats and no more than 4"
Very nice, simple solution for a railing any DIY-er can do. My only nitpick would be to use a 2 x 3 as the hand grip.
Agreed, 2x4 is not to code because when falling, it’s too hard to grip; 2x3 is easier for the fingers to get around.
You're good. Nice video.

I THINK THE SAFTEY CODE IS 4'' SPACING BETWEEN UPRIGHT SLATS IN MOST PLACES.
Yeah, no more than 4 inches between spindles. Spindles are just as cheap as 2x4 but looks nicer too.

A clear sealant, stain or pressure treated woood could be used. All these options would provide more life to railing.
not sure where you are but most places that wouldn't be up to code. there are requirements for grip size (15" - 2.25") and requirements for returns.
Man I didn't know we could do it like this. I was going to put a 4×4 post in the ground and fill with quikcrete

Does this handrail meet your building code?
Very nice, but I would have used treated wood. Also is it up to code?
Not even close to code, that would fail everytime a 2x4 railing post? lol omg
balusters do not meet code. no opening larger that will pass 4" diameter ball.

I just noticed the same thing, he made a mistake, it should be 34 1/2" . It would be 32 if he marked at the bottom of the vertical rail
Awesome job! Will you be doing more videos on this topic soon?
Best Access Doors how many 2 by 4 s do I need??
Awesome job. Only thing you did wrong was the spacing on the spindles is to much. Supposed to be 4 inches max
How about a the untreated wood exposed to the elements? Especially the post that nearly makes contact with the ground.

I'm confused, is that height 32 inches or 36 inches? I heard you say 36 and measure out 32 inches.
okay nice job but using untreated lumber it won't last long without painting just saying
Heidi Logsdon Correct .You just slap some stain or paint on when done for protection.
stain and paint just prolongs the inevitable. It needs to be pressure treated. Otherwise thanks for the measurement tips.
