Just wrapping another house for D.R. Horton and wanted to bring you in on another home improvement. This could possibly replace a handrail that isn’t secure anymore or add this handrail for extra security walking up and down the stairs to the house.
To meet code requirements make sure your finished product height is between 36 and 38 inches. Measure from the front edge of the first stair and the front edge of the last stair to verify the top and bottom of your handrail are at the correct heights. When installing the balusters to meet code, all you need to make sure is that there is LESS than 4 inches of space between each baluster.
When working with wood material and using screws to secure that material it is always good to “pre-drill” your material. This will prevent the material from cracking and losing support. In my case I use a “counter-sink” drill bit that recesses the head of the screw into your material for a clean and secure grab of the screw.
Brick moulding is the style of casing around the door seen standing in the garage. This is a standard casing used across all different manufactures for exterior door applications. Due to the style and that my handrail intersects that casing, I cut a double bevel mitre, on the Dewalt 12” mitre saw to make a clean finish.

The ...no...THE best carpenter video I have ever seen. Why? He covered the code, how you don't need to measure everything, use your eyeball (IF you are good-most people should measure), and he pointed out the WHY on every "detail" that counts. Great job.
The "only" parts of the code he referenced were the "height" code and "balluster spacing" code.
Attaching handrail directly to brickmould would NEVER pass code where I live. Also would not pass without a minimum of 2 × 4 for bottom post.
My concern with this is that if someone walks up/down the stairs and falls against this handrail, the rail will not support the stress load and will fail thereby causing potential serious injury from the fall.

Thanks man for the feedback! The handrail should always be on the side of wall of a light switch or a doorknob...that way you keep control of your stability if you do have to take your hand off the rail...it’s only for a brief second...

If that's to code, you have loose codes. I would never build a railing without one primary post to support side loading. Even at the end of your video, when you say it is "solid", the railing flexes when you apply a minor pressure. Everything would be fine, except I would put a much stronger bottom post to carry extra side loading.
I understand where you are coming from. The railing flexes a little but would catch any person if they were grabbing that in a fall. Also provides plenty of support for just walking up and down the stairs...I have never seen a post for garage stairs before I feel that might be a little overkill. I have never had a warranty for a garage stairs rail that broke do to side load issues, but there’s always a first...Obviously code changes for inside the house...posts required at every 8 ft...

@@huntercarlson5446 They make us use a 2 by 6 as a post at the bottom, screwed to the stringer. But we are just using raw wood. That would ruin the aesthetics if we used a finished product as you are.

If you truly believe that this railing will support you in a fall, then i would suggest you prove so in a video.
Do this by tying a rope to the handrail, pulling on the rope with spring weight attached (luggage weight spring) and see if it takes more than 75 lbs pull to cause railing to fail. Should realistically take 200 lbs to be considered safe.

I appreciate the compliment! It’s called a “twist drill bit” I use the dewalt brand. There is a 3 pack for 19.99 or 1 for 9.99. I also use a 2 1/2” Phillips wood screw to secure everything together. How did u find 9 degree for brick moulding?
Hello Hunter, what gauge nailer are you using for this install? I'm trying to determine whether to purchase a 16 or 18 gauge nailer. Awesome video by the way.
Thank you very much for the compliment! I’m using a 16 ga metabo finish nailer bought from Lowe’s...I’m also using 2” nails. Depending on the project in your home I mainly use the 16 ga for just a little more strength. I use the 18 ga mainly for nailing casing to the door jambs and for small pieces of trim that might split with the larger nail. Either way you cannot go wrong! Both can shoot a 2” nail! I stay away from 2 1/2”nails altogether because the track home builders will come back at me if a water line or electric is hit by that long of a nail. Just by using 2” I don’t have that liability. Hey Steven! I get all of my material from a Millwork shop called Alpine Lumber here in Denver. You can’t find the detail at Lowes or Home Depot unfortunately…the balusters are just 2”x2”x4’primed, but I was able to find the handrail detail at Menards. Hope this link works:

I get most of my material from Alpine Lumber Millwork shop off of I-70 and Tower Rd...if you call them up and ask for the “garage rail and 2x2 balusters primed” they should understand what you are looking for! You totally can! There is nothing against what material is used for the handrail portion when it comes to code. My only recommendation is to sand and paint the 2x6 to prevent future splinters...you are exactly right with the piece I’m using, it was routed at the Millwork shop...any other questions please let me know! Great vid but codes are so f'in annoying/idiotic. Wouldn't want a child falling through a handrail that is 14" off the ground 🤦🏻♂️

Pull on it side to side, I could pull it apart. You need a post at bottom anchored for strength.
