- If you are looking to learn more about being a builder, here is a great way to step up your game! LEARN THE CODES. This video is all about codes for handrails (required on most stairs and some ramps), not to be confused with GUARDS, which are used to prevent falls from raised walking surfaces. These are residential codes from the 2018 ICC code book for North Carolina, but are a standard in most of the U.S. (as well as many other countries). Just a note: there are some exceptions for larger size handrails for outdoor use and in garages.
This does not cover everything, but most of the biggies. ALWAYS check with your local inspector if you have any question!!!

another stellar vid Perkins Brothers! edit: Erik gets scolded by Jaime to stop touching the wall .... 45 seconds later touches wall. I LOVE THESE GUYS
Me too touching my newly painted walls has always been one of my pet peeves. My crews always knew that was a great way to get their butts chewed out. Lmao.
Never thought a lot about handrails until I became disabled‼️ Now, 1st thing I look for when approaching stairs‼️ Thank You for this Important Detail‼️
The drone footage is Breathtaking‼️ ⛰
Hey guys, as a GC in Naples, Florida with 20+ years in the industry, I want to say your team is top notch. It is great to see that craftsmanship and dedication to the trade is still alive and well! I enjoy your content and have learned a few tips along the way... we are always learning in this business. It is also great to see Jaime getting back in the action!
Love the channel and the great details you provide in your videos.
Be well Jamie
Great job of explaining the most common hand railings across the country there can be some minor variations. Everyone ask your local building inspectors office or inspector even if the person is a jerk they will give you the right information for their area.
It’s a snow day here today, so I’m brushing up on my code knowledge and found your video. I signed in just to say how much I liked the little moment with the dirty hand on the corner. You guys radiate positivity. Really great video all the way around.
Thanks. My contractor just asked me "How high do you want the handrail?" HE IS SUPPOSED to know that. Amazing!
A comprehensive review of code requirements. Interesting the ergonomic specification and returned to the wall.
Great info, thanks for making these videos!!
Hey good to see Jamie out there with the boys! Rock on doods
Being the cameraman isn't such a dumb idea!
Dood!
G te
Good ole boy, knocking it out.
That house is fricken sweet! All about the details!
Great video nice to see builders building to code
Great video. Glad to see Jaime back At it.
thanks for posting ... just the info I needed
Don't know where y'all get the energy to do what you do, but thanks for doing it!
Please keep mAking these code videos !!
Very helpful. Just want back to watch this video
Good info!Thank you 😊
Great info fellas
Nice location thanks for the video.
Just watched your video. Great job. On a side note for another fun tip : Decks, Porches and Patios cannot have horizontal climbable baluster. ; )
We're always on the same schedule, trimming out stairs today and my favorite, painting doors
That’s awesome! Are you starting a new one soon?
@@PerkinsBuilderBrothers yeah man block is being laid so won't be long. Gotta love starting a new house in the blazing sun. No shade haha
Very informative. I like your building code videos.
I knew all that since I just passed my Building Contractor test yesterday!
Congratulations dude! Best wishes
Allison, ya gotta get used to being called dude now. Just take it as a compliment as to your manliness. Seriously, as in "manning up", and passing the dammed test.
Congratulations!
Hey just FYI when I zoom to fill the screen on my phone some of your text is cut out in the video, you guys are great
Coolbeans... learning more all the time.
Right on.
hello perkins bros and family can you do a video on the many different ways to set stair post inside framing or outside framing of the stringers without all the metal brackets and stuff
Eric, the "return to the wall" is also Fire Code. The snagging issue is important for firefighters.
Y'all need to build my house!
Commercial guard rail height is 42".
Very nice 🤴
How do I diy the ending piece of the handrail that goes into the wall? How does it stay sturdy and strong?
Beverly hills cop lmao. Funny addition to the video
I can’t figure out how far do guard rails only have to extend past the start of the staircase? 6”? Or just past the line? Currently providing my own handrail in my new home build
Eric, on the exterior railing on the deck, not the stairs, can you have a board on top of the metal? Like to set a cup on?
Yes
Reading the code book is boring as can be but is very much needed
What about stairs that are cantilevered from the wall? Can I have a handrail attached to the wall and completely open on the other side?
My porch only has 2 risers, if I want to build a handrail do I have to build one on both sides?
Some smart mo fos you guys are
In California the new residential code for balcony rail height is 42” minimum
Chamfer Reyes still 36” here, but 42” is better I think
@@PerkinsBuilderBrothers 42" for multi-family dwellings, UBC.
Is this the code everywhere? Our California GC installed a 2x8 as the handrail on our porch steps, even though the plans specified something completely different. Are we going to get dinged by the inspector on this?!
If it’s more than four steps probably so
Codes seem a little arbitrary sometimes. In my area they don’t care about that return into the wall, which seems a little over the top to me anyway, but the horizontal railing outside is an absolute no-go. And I agree with that, as would probably anybody with a 5 year old.. Anything ‘climbable’ is out. Railing height minimums also change with height off the ground. Take-away for me, I think, is check codes in your own areas.
anyone know what the brand of safety glasses Erik is wearing?
KG Maverick
What about from top of Deck yo Bottom of walkway height.
What about a secondary hand rail for children?
So is this considered structural or decorative for insurance
Hottie 😍 I’ve just attached a large tree branch which I sanded down ...as my hand rail it looks mint 😍
It's one thing to meet county code, much harder to get to Jaime code.
Who makes the glasses your wearing..?
Kg maverick
The codes are generally important and best to follow but they're not perfect or ideal for everyone in every situation. For example, standard hand rail height is great if you're around average height but if you're significantly above or below average height then that won't work for you and can make it dangerous to use as reaching for a handrail that isn't optimally placed for your specific height will result in you more easily losing your balance.
For staircases primarily used by kids for example, the code puts it lower to about 28 inches, for example, for that very reason...
While ADA compliance mainly just covers the minimums, which means it doesn't automatically mean it will work for someone of special needs, and so some will have to go up to significantly beyond them to properly adjust the home for their needs or change them completely as not every special need is compatible with others.
Problem being code mainly only covers what works for the average person and they're not comprehensive enough to account for everyone else or allow for ease of flexibility to adapt, except for some limited exceptions. Along with being slow to change, anything new won't meet code for years or even decades until they get around to updating the code, even if it's much better than what the existing code requires... Add the problem of the general focus on the eventual resale of the home, which makes it prohibitive to make any significant changes from established norms as you'll have to change it all back when it's sold... Makes it extremely difficult for the people who do not fit the norms...
Though, codes can vary county to county and have different enforcement/strictness, adding to the complexity that people may have to deal with... Like many things, there's room for improvement!
That’s weird because stairs are approved every day with newel post on 2nd step. Handrail is within reach of bottom riser
Commercial height for a barrier is 42 inches. You need a foot of flat on the top but not the bottom. On a handicap ramp it needs the foot of flat on the bottom. What surprised me is their is no code on handrail bracket spacing. Just has to support a certain amount of weight.
Hey good info! Thanks
Almonds 😏😏
for starters you must have soft building codes, cable railings are essentially a cable ladder for children. Any serious building code will not allow any climbable balluster or the like
Dude that siding was horrrendus. 1/2 gaps? YOu gonna need a box of caulk for that door!
A little off topic but where are those pants from? LOL seriously though
Think they did a pants video.

@@adamhass8522 thank you for that Sir, have to check em out tonight 👍
My brother got a balloon from our ceiling. He's a mechanic. Guess what my white wall looks like now? Fml.
2x4 handrail for a deck passes code everywhere in the triangle
For deck stairs*
42" height for commercial guard rails with a 30-38" height for handrails
Actually it ties into the foundation so it's more structurally secure look up disgusting handrails In a year I'll have a video up around then
Gets told not to touch paint with his dirty hands. 2 seconds later he has his dirty hands on the same wall he was told not to touch.
Yep we all do it.
I thought lateral cables were against code due to lil kids climbing em…?
You should look up Naked Prosthetics
NFPA 101 life safety code applies to residential and states guard rails for platforms more than 30" above grade must be 42".
Commercial is generally 34-36 inches for ADA (Americans with disabilities Act)
How do I find someone who really knows building codes to build a handrail and not just some random handyman? 🤔
So either some of these codes don’t exist here or not a single inspector knows any of them lol
Yup, I live in a house that would fail half of these ;)
Commercial is 42”
Wash those dirty hands
Y'all have way too many regs.
