    1. Overeating. Eat normally when not actually fasting.
    2. Eating wrong diet. A high insulin diet will make it harder to stick to your fasting plan. 3:13
    3. Doing it alone. 6:13
    4. Triggers like emotional eating and other bad habits 7:05
    5. Right environment 8:17
Some of the many benefits of doing occasional extended fasting: Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered. Fribrosis/scarring is reversed over time and telomeres are lengthened, which also helps with lung fibrosis. The hunger hormone ghrelin lowers with extended fasting and rises from dieting. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy! Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate due to norepinephrine release! Reflexes and short term memory are increased.
After 72 hours or more fasted, your body recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire immune system.
Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods.
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus.
Losing weight through intermittent fasting shows greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast, though if the amount is tiny you will go back into ketosis very quickly. Most teas and herbs are OK. Most supplements and meds will either break ketosis directly or contain a filler that will. Many medications are dangerous to take while fasting so you may have to talk to your dr. about discontinuing them during a fast.
Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it when the fast is broken by increasing lutenizing hormone and helps build muscle by increasing insulin sensitivity!
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
Does the body preferentially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, your body always runs mainly on fat except for brief periods of very intense exercise. Your brain also prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when they are available in equal quantity to glucose.
Fasting stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses.
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention!
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging.
Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.
Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
A fasting mimicking diet for 3-5 days in a row also provides many of the same benefits as water fasting. FMD usually has 200-800 calories, under 18 g of protein and under 18 g of carb.
Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.

February will be my five year anniversary of IF and cutting out sugar.
One thing I've learned is that probably the most important part, even more that fasting, is eating unprocessed foods. That is an easy thing to say, but much harder to actually do. It is hard to overeat unprocessed foods. Food had never made sense to me, and the switch from junk calories to unprocessed food has shown me that when eating actual real food it does work, it does make sense.

As well as the great feeling that comes after fasting. You have less cleaning of cooking utensils less energy used as you don't have to cook when you fast. Less shopping, more high quality foods. And you spend less dosh. Sound's like a plan. The Fungster has made a convert of me.

Well I dont stuff myself when I am eating my meals Otherwise it defeats the whole purpose of fasting.

donoughts cakes pies candies crisps and sodas.
I am sure that their is much more addictive rubbish that people call food.

On point No. 3. For those who are alone in their pursuit of health, weight loss, reversal of T2D etc, refer regularly to video's which assist you in maintaining your will. The more you learn about how the body works and understanding the importance of a whole food lifestyle, the stronger you become, the easier it is to remain focussed without actually being conscious of being focused. Affirmation, steep yourself in the habits which promote health and longevity and be empowered by this pursuit.

I started intermittent fasting 5 weeks ago. I only eat for 4 hours each day, except for coffee or tea. I have lost 20 pounds and my blood sugars are almost normal. The best part is that it’s not hard. Yes, I get a little hungry around 4 pm, but I find that I can make is to 6 or 7 pm when we usually eat dinner without much trouble. If I absolutely have to eat, I have some nuts. For my evening snack I have nuts of full fat Greek yogurt. I am feeling better that I have in years. Thank you, Dr. Fung!

I used the app ZERO to track my fastjng and join the challenge in the app like fastjng for 16 hours a day 4 days a week. Etc it make me focused of reaching the goal of fasting instead of food. Now I am eating one meal a day no problem. Hope this help. And best wishes

I’ve gained 8# recently & that is so aggravating to me. I need to get out of the kitchen! 😂 Thank you Jason again for your teaching! HAPPY NEW YEAR!🎆

Hi Dr. Fung! I'm new to IF. I was lucky enough to stumble upon a CZcams video where someone was interviewing you. It made total sense to me. I'd like to thank you for your work, ur dedication to humanity, and for giving up your time so freely. I bought your book so that is helping me. My question is this (if you have the time to answer it - I actually have 2 questions 😁). My first is: I just turned 62, I'm 4'11 (barely) I weigh 139.9 on 12/27 @ my most recent doctor visit. I started IF on Tuesday 01/17. I fast during the day drinking coffee, tea and broth. I eat dinner between 5-6 & eat whatever I cook for my family. I don't go overboard or anything. Do you think I should increase this to IF to where if I have dinner on Monday at 5, do IF & not eat till Wednesday at 5, OR do you think what I have been doing, i.e., eating once a day should be sufficient? My second question is when I was at Costco, I saw a little box of 6 cans of Unsweetened coconut milk. I bought it, because it had zero sugar and only one carb per 1/3 cup and 12 grams of fat.... When I got home I didn't see this in ur book as an approved additives. I only would use a teaspoon or two. What are your thoughts. And thank you to you and All the Nepherologist around the world who took care of people like my Dad. You are the real Heroes/Superheros of the world. 💝 Thank you again, for your time.

Of my 3 favorite creators on the subject of fasting your vids have the lowest amount of “triggers”
What I mean by this, is that you don’t show a bunch of pictures or videos of people eating or food items.
You did it once in this vid in the first few minutes, compared with your vid from about a year ago on the same topic; eating too much/ biggest mistake which I just watched prior, (thanks to the algorithms)
Any way, thanks for spreading the word, you do great work!

    I agree Dr Fung...
I mistakenly tend to overeat after my prolonged fasts or during eating windows of my intermittent fastings,
    although it's NOT
    junk-refined
    processed foods,
    but nevertheless
I do overeat on wholesome foods.
Obviously, I don't experience weight loss, but either remain in the same weight or gain some 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi Dr. Fung, Thank you for your books and videos. I'm wondering how to fit kombucha into IF and extended fasts. I make my own, and my digestion feels better when I drink it. The sugar level is 8 on a Brix meter after a total of 4 weeks of fermentation. To the 2nd fermentation, I add blueberries and lemon. I have followed a 16/8 protocol for a long time, but haven't lost weight. I'm changing my diet to low carb and my protocol to 19/5, and would like to try extended fasts (36-48 hrs.). I try to eat between 1pm and 6pm, so I would drink the kombucha around 1pm with my first meal. I'm wondering if the sugar content is too high to be helpful. Any suggestions? Thank you so much. Your information is easy to understand, and life changing. :)

I didn't even realize I have been intermittent fasting for years. I thought intermittent fasting consisted of eating every other day. Oh well, I hadn't ever looked into it, so I never knew better. My brother and mom are diabetic. He decided to eat better to improve his health, he started eating the same things that I have always enjoyed. I'm hoping I will not ever be diabetic, but probably won't be because I am 51 and 135 lbs and LOVE the things that are good for me, don't like junk anymore. I did fast for religious purposes throughout the years, I guess that helped me unknowingly.

Eating every other day is a type of intermittent fasting.. but these days when people say "intermittent fasting" they sometimes mean time restricted eating.. The words "fasting" and "restricted" seem to scare people or make them jump to objections.. Tell them "eat no more than 3 times a day including any snack and don't eat at night" and they agree it's healthy.
Good on you for cutting out and no longer craving junk. That's more than half the battle for a lot of people.

I prefer fasting on my own. I also prefer exercising on my own. Many of the drawbacks others face do not apply to me.
I always had the ability to fast or feast at any given time. I can eat what 2 people normally eat without any difficulty. I also have no problem skipping meals for a whole day. It is partly due to being a vegetarian and not being able to find vegetarian food when I travelled within Malaysia.
When going for long walks, I prefer to be on my own, whereby I can walk at the pace I want, without having to speed up or slow down to match the others.
Even as a child, I resented having to eat even when I didn't feel hungry. It was a big relief to me when I found out about intermittent fasting and autophagy after watching Dr. Jason Fung's videos.
I have been practicing intermittent fasting for the last 5 months and I feel so much better now.
I know that what works for me is likely not to work for most people.

Good luck. I too started my fasting regime with a 120 hour fast, but broke the fast after 90+ hours. I wasn't feeling hungry. I had very high acidic feeling in my mouth. I mistakenly thought that I had too much acidity in the gut and broke the fast.
It was weeks later that I discovered that the reason I felt acidic was due to too little acid in the GI tract. Had I known what I know now, I could have fasted for a week. After the 2nd day, there was no hunger.
