Yup, thought the very same 😅
Baumgartner Restoration :o are you really filmed alone?
Whoever painted over that gold leaf also covered all of their hardwood floors with linoleum.
And removed the stained glass features and replaced them with thin window glass...
That person probably did it so people dont steal it. I am not saying it was good to do it but at that time for that person it probably was the best solution.
R/rareinsults
Rue Beingcool r/foundthemobileuser
But Linoleum is a natural product with linseed oil and would leave the timber floor beneath to "breathe". Rather the travesty committed would be to cover the floor with a wood grain patterned vinyl!

Who the hell looked at this frame and went: "haha lemme just paint over gold leaf lol"
I imagine that the gold leaf got damaged and they priced up a repair, it was too expensive to do or the fashion changed so out went the gold leaf and in came some paint to match the latest trend. They kind up recycled it by painting it then inadvertently gave Julian a job to do much later on in its life 😀
Veronica gold went out of fashion a few decades ago and a lot of gold frames were painted over
That was probably done so the painting won't be stolen. Some people did that during ww2 so that german soldiers won't take their paintings as they went through the towns.

I imagine it must have been like everyone’s obsession with chalk paint.
All the camera angles - this must’ve taken ages to film. Bless you, it is a beautiful video.

And if you like the ambience of Julians videos, you might like Ford Hallam too. A different kind of artist, but he does some amazing work in metalshaping and engraving, and also follows tradition.

I was wondering how he was going to "fix" the cracks as well. No need at all, love it

I always thought that I didn't enjoyed the ASMR thing. Turns out I just don't like people whispering in my ear. I live for your videos
Same I can't handle the whispering and all the other weird stuff. But this. This is great.
I'm watching this video for the second time and I know already there will be many reruns for me. Still can't figure out what I enjoy more, the technical aspect, craftsmanship or the ASMR side of it. Both are excellent.
Oh my gosh, I'm so glad the clients decided to do the Frame. I couldn't believe that they didn't want it done in the first place. Incredible how well you matched that frame. You do such great work.
I know people before were talking about how the juxtaposition of the aged frame with the restored painting made it feel like a window into the past. But oh my god, this is beautiful. For me the gold and contrasted with the cool tones of the painting really gives it a window feeling. Like you're inside a warm, luxurious store front looking out at a cold winter's day. I think it really adds to the impact of the painting. Excellent work.
I also completely didn't realize before cleaning that the frame was supposed to be all gold. I thought it was mostly white/pale paint with gold filigree or something on the raised carvings. What causes that kind of thick and solid grime?
EDIT: I didn't realize there was a narrated version. Checking it out now, and it seems some of my questions are answered already.
Did the owner love the painting restoration so much that he requested the frame to be restored after?
Because it remember you telling us that the owner wanted the frame to be left unchanged
Yeah, after seeing the painting conserved they decided to go ahead with the frame. It's explained in the narrated video.

It ain’t cheap either lol
It's called aging the gilt or something, my mother did gold leaf and gilt work for Collins (dictionaries, encyclopedias etc) and it's weirdly quite destructive work, however the strength of gold leaf once applied is phenomenal, you can see he used different tapes to give different aged effects etc.
My mum told me once that after every shift they were searched because pure 18/24ct gold leaf back in the day was expensive so not a crumb was wasted. They spent at least half an hour scouring the tables with a brush to gather up even gold leaf dust.
This isn't even ASMR for me, I just stayed because I was intrigued lol

So glad I discovered this channel. By far one of my favorites. While sharing your CZcams channel with friends I pointed out that it appears you really have to be a bit of a Renaissance man in order to be a competent restorer. At the very least you have to be a carpenter, a chemist, a historian and a fine artist. The work is phenomenal, and watching the process is a lot of fun. Also, what a great way to get people into art history. Do you find time to paint and exhibit your own work, or does this take the majority of your time? Thanks for sharing!
