Everybody loves a big painting, in fact one of my professors once said that "big isn't better, it's just better." And he meant that even if the painting is banal and about something uninteresting like shoe laces, if it's big it commands attention and must be reckoned with.
Luckily this big painting isn't boring or banal, but it is big. And as any painting gets larger the complexity of a conservation does as well. From the duration any one procedure takes, to the equipment required to treat the painting and even little things like handling become obstacles that must be overcome.
Thus far most of the videos address smaller works that never face these challenges. I wanted to take the opportunity to show how a conservation changes as the scale does. - Zábava

Cactus Kaktus this literally deserves more recognition and the fact that its not one of the most liked comments upsets me greatly

why isnt this the top comment this made me laugh irl
That is a severely underrated comment you have right there....
I have to imagine a very corpulent black man not unlike big smoke watching this video very carefully and with full attention, commenting this with the utmost vigor.
I always thought these painters just had a thing for dark, desaturated and depressing colors. Turns out, it's grime.
Same! When I went to Italy 5 years ago, I've visited some important cathedral that had various artworks displayed and I was stunned by all the colours! The paintings were so lush that it almost made me felt like a sinner. I was thoroughly shocked.
Just like how classical sculptures were supposed to be painted, I actually like the white marble grim look
Mixture of grime, yellowed varnish and some pigment discoloration.
I shouldn't be surprised, but I am, at how often much of the grime is tobacco smoke.
If I knew how to ain’t I would use those colors, as a way of setting the atmosphere most of my painting would have. After all, they are supposed to reflect off your emotions or lack thereof.
Me, in my underwear on a beanbag chair eating cheetos:
"Ah yes, the Belgian linen! Excellent choice! Exactly what I would have done!"

Which world do you live in where you have to be specifically taught how to put a tack or a nail in your mouth without hurting yourself..?
"average person eats 3 tacks a year" factoid is actually just a statistical error. The average person eats 0 tacks a year. Tacks Julian, who lives in a studio and eats over 10.000 tacks a day, is an outlier and should not have been counted.

He does it so nicely too. I'd be like " what stupid feckin' eejit decided that lead paint and a hanky were appropriate canvas repair mediums?!"

YESSSS
I don’t perceive it as roasting. I reckon it’s more that the earlier conservational work has been made at a time where the modern day’s materials, techniques and technologies weren’t available or even thought up/invented.
My guess is that the lead paint may even be a century old or so (but it’s just a guess).

my favorite part of watching these videos is judging the (bad) past conservation attempts as if I have anything more than basic knowledge of art conservation
It seems to me that this is an expression of pain that the painting has not been treated in the best possible way.
I love restoring things and using power tools to do it. This video was on my feed and I thought painting restoration?? Give me a break… So I watched a few minutes of it thinking big whoop, but the longer I watched it, the more I began to understand the intricacies of each and every step and the type of personality equipped to manage such a restoration. Your patience, your knowledge and your equipment, blew my mind. Never did I think I would make it through 10 minutes let alone the full length of this video. Bravo my friend… Bravo!
I like fixing things myself but unfortunately I was born without the patience gene I'd crack up after 5 minutes of scraping and put my foot through the painting..
Sometimes I get emotional thinking about that original artist who, unknown to them, will have their work be so lovingly treated and whose original vision will be so faithfully followed. As a student training to be a research scientist, part of my job someday will be to leave behind research and data for the next generation to build upon. I can only hope that my own legacy will be treated with such care, and watching Julian work on these paintings has influenced the respect with which I treat my predecessors in my own field. Both art and science are conversations that span centuries, and if you know how to listen, even long-gone masters can have a whole lot to say.

One of his best lines.
How on earth have I only just found this channel? Superb. Many hours of joy to come 🧡 Thank You! 🧡
Dude, ...i would love to buy your pallet as a piece of art! It tells me how much you tried to match any colour you've painted! It's ART!
i love how julian is starting to bring more humor into his videos he has such a great personality
he made a joke?
Ill clart your head in
Yes, he has a great sense of humor 😂😂

Never before have I ever been so relaxed and lmfao simultaneously. Until Julian. 🤣
Me when I saw Julian filling his mouth with tacks: Oh, he's so playful, love that
me 3 seconds later: holy god he is serious
This painting drove him insane
I love how you wheel the painting in and barely squeaked past that corner and wooden shim… and just make it in without a scratch!🥰
Just stumbled onto your channel, and I'm finding these videos very soothing and relaxing, it's amazing to see the difference just after the cleaning.
Julian: *turns to the camera*
Me: squarespace
Come on at least he makes it entertaining
@@Margie555 I wasn't talking shit I was just saying it's completely telegraphed
@@DelPlays ME lol
I love how he makes it sound like a tutorial but we're all just watching this at 3 am
literally 2:45 am right now
3:02 😪
You can stop attacking us now...I feel so called out...
That's what all tutorial videos are
4:57 am
I'm jealous. I realize it can be a long tedious process, but to have that intimate connection to the piece and the artist seems very fulfilling. Keep up the amazing work my friend.
I can’t imagine having the ability to do this kind of work...it has to be so satisfying, and of course your clients appreciation...well done!
Julian: *pours tacks into hand*
Me: "Ah yes, alrighty, time for the superior tacks, go Julian-"
Julian: *puts the handful of tacks into mouth*
Me: 👁️👄👁️ ⱼᵤₗᵢₐₙ, ᵢ ₗₒᵥₑ ᵧₒᵤ ᵦᵤₜ 𝓌ₕₐₜ₋

Lol I'm dying
Oh 👁👄👁 no
Julian I love you but what?
@@chrisding1976I think they meant is as "I love you but what the [expletive]"
Me: takes note to always roll up a painting paint layer out
Also me: will probably never transport a painting in my life
Lily Von Feldt I am now criticizing every movie I have seen or will see which rolls the painting layer inside.
Me: takes studious notes on how and when to retouch a painting
Also me: has not touched paint since 6th grade
Lol
I have a painting in storage, and I rolled it layer in, *AAAHHGGGGG*
'Hell yea imma use this knowledge!'
But then I realise that I rarely use paint...
And that I've been transitioning to digital art for the past three years...
And when I do use paint, it's mostly watercolour on a very tiny scale...
'well never mind then'
I love how this painting takes so long to clean that we literally watched him grow a beard
I really must start watching more of this channel. Your voice is so soothing without being boring, and the information is useful and interesting. Then there's just the visual delight of it
