    There are many issues a conservator may face when working on any given painting including old varnish and surface grime, lost paint and other superficial damage, past conservation or repair work and major structural failures. Sometimes the conservator must address all of them.
    Though the artist is unknown this painting of Salvator Mundi dates back to approximately the early 1600's and in the 400 plus years since creation it has been handled and worked on many times with mixed results. Aside from major inpainting the wood panel has been repaired and even split due to poor framing choices.
    This video walks us through the process of cleaning the work, removing old overpainting, addressing the structural failures and developing a novel solution to a problematic framing issue.

    • @ozark7076
      @ozark7076 Před 4 lety +91

      Shenanigans I know right! More than anything I appreciate how when he paints over the areas with losses, he doesn’t try to add in any painterly flair or whatnot, he just does what is necessary. And even if it doesn’t look the exact same close up, it looks pretty darn good when you’re looking at painting as a whole. It’s truly the mark of a good conservationist

    • @ozark7076
      @ozark7076 Před 4 lety +27

      Donald Trump For sure, I don’t think there’d ever be a case where a person doesn’t want the paint to match. But sometimes, depending on the type of paint used and other factors, it can get extremely difficult to color match exactly. And though it’s preferred, all that really matters is that the repainted areas are in unison with the rest of the painting. If it’s not, we’ve seen him remove and correct repaint jobs he feels don’t match well enough so I really think the reason he doesn’t always match the colors perfectly is that he just doesn’t need to?

    • @wuggy4082
      @wuggy4082 Před 4 lety +47

      the point of retouching is not to repaint the painting, it is to disguise the damage, hence why he doesn’t mimic the painting style or exact color. he purposely makes it different.

    • @Tommy9834
      @Tommy9834 Před 4 lety +21

      @Donald Trump there are two types of conservations.
      One type is to hide all the damages, and make it look like new to the best of one's ability. This one is for moatly collectors
      The other is to show that restoration work was done. This one is used for meusums usually.

    "I always use reversible paint so that if someone who restore it in the future can undo my work to make it better"
    It's an awesome approach being a conservator brother cos may be in future new technology may open door to a conserve painting to more sophisticated manners in short it all boils down to a philosophical thinking "whatever do now do it leaving a space for the future generations to work with"
