hey nice profile and name. its so rare to see any SNSD fans here...
Naw, you wouldn't. Because you would have had a financial reason to remain in the game and you know an answer like that would have gotten you voted out first round for not saying anything useful.
@@singbin thank you. Been a fan for 11 years now. Iâm old lol
Just a reminder: you donât need to read books about atheism to be an atheist.
Exactly!!
You donât need to know who Richard Dawkins is to be an atheist either. Itâs good to know, but your knowledge about atheism shouldnât define you. We all have different paths that lead us to atheism and all of them definitely involved self-reflection and thatâs great and enough.
Yeah just have a bad upbringing with zealot đ

You shouldnât have beliefs that you arenât educated in
@@mr16325 Yes, atheism is just not believing in one or multiple gods. Itâs the other way round.

For real. They talked about atheism books like they were a bible.
Iâm a marvel fan but I donât read the comic books
itâs so funny bc they acted like religious people when they go âyouâre not really a christian if you havenât read the Bibleâ like??? why are you trying to turn atheism into a religion
I don't really see it like that. It's just heavily recommended in the atheist community that you do your own research so it's kind of assumed that you've done some reading or what not because everyone has lol
I guess Iâm not an atheist, because I didnât read any atheist literature
đ right
there is nothing like 'atheist literature'. what they call atheist literature is philosophical point of view of the world without sky daddy involved.
@@MorbiusBlueBalls sky daddy
@@MorbiusBlueBalls Also the ramblings of a bunch of self-important atheists who'll later turn out to be lowkey white supremacists, so...not missing out on much!
I dont know why they're treating this as though atheism is a religion??? That kinda defeats the point.
Generally people in America who label themselves athiest are a part of a community and interested in athiest philosophy and basically treat it like a religion. People who don't care about the existence of a god are just agnostic.
I'm not even atheist and they got me going huh?
â@@harrygarris6921 Trust me most of us don't. I don't know where they found these people but I'm mostly friends with non religious people and no one acts like this
@@xcraetor9276 Okay well I know agnostic and athiest basically mean the same thing but I've heard people who just don't have a faith referred to more as agnostic and people where they consciously don't believe that a God exists referred to as athiest
Also, identifying with what they don't like and what believe is awful, and as they focus on that, they become kind of not that nice. I thought I was an atheist but maybe not. Would rather not identify myself with this vibe
As a atheist this video made me really uncomfortable. They sound like being atheist is being part of a religion which is very contradictory.
True, but also remember that being atheist does not equal non-religious, there are religious atheists, I think that's the case in Buddhism. Atheist=does not believe in a god/gods =/= non religious
They were literally just discussing logic, my dude.
@@Volzotran I'm not an expert on the variations of buddhism. But to counter your definition of atheism, atheism is actually to not believe in anything beyond the material world. So not holding a believe that is tied to a specific religion or god(s) doesnt necessarily mean that a person is not spiritual in other ways, which would make the person not an atheist.
@@buddybuddy2011 atheism literally means a disbelief in a god/gods, so as long as some one does not believe in any deity they are atheists, doesn't matter if they practice anything spiritual, I personally think that it doesn't make much sense to call yourself an atheist and believe in astrology etc, but they're per definition still atheists.
But I also think it comes off a little strong here is because everyone's trying to convincingly seem atheist and also find the mole at same time.
"What's one of your favorite atheist texts?" Whut. One of the best parts of being an atheist is not having to read long, preachy books.
Lmao, I agree. Although it doesnât hurt in reading about other opinions and definitions.
Oh mood. Like I ainât got time or mental energy to read long books even if wanted to. So Iâd probably be outed lmao

its cuz its a competition asking questions regarding atheism. so they are asking questions atheists might know. ik of the pastafarian thing, some atheist celebs, levels of atheism (agnostic, positive atheism), but idk any books. being an atheist and accepting evolution and science is part of it too. not sure why this annoyed people when religious people are the ones who act like this all the time

@@madaz952 no one acts like this is real life but people no matter the religious belief argue insanely hard on the internet.
I found it very interesting when one of them was trying to support their case for being an atheist by saying that the Christian community persecuted them. I guess the term âpersecutedâ isnât exclusive to Christians, but the way she used it in the opposite context was intriguing.

I like how they talk about religion as 'baloney' and 'ascientific' and then go on to talk about star signs and astrology
Agreed.. Buutttt several people believe in both
Um there were both, truth seeking science affirms and astrologists. But the difference here is, one has a base that has been proven to exist through many senses, where religions with senseless gods don't.
@@annalinde1381 i might've read that wrong, but there is no proof of merit in starsigns. You could argue that some things suggest that there is merit, but that could be applied to basically every religion that exists
Well, they're atheists... but not skeptics xD
Literally sometimes I feel like the only true atheist lol
the second Emily said 'if you're open to hearing about atheism I am down to tell you all about it', I knew she was the mole. it's spoken like a true christian, making athiesm sound like a belief system when it's the opposite, an absence of belief
But also, every single person in this video was trying to make atheism seem like a belief system.
Yea like I understand that atheism isn't a religion, but a lot of atheists like in this video love to shove it in people's faces like it is
@@spilledsalt4862 how? they simply said they read books about it, it doesnât mean they are portraying it as a belief system
You wouldnât think it listening to this group though. âKatie couldnât name any atheist works!â Actually anything in the atheist literature discussion. âWhat type of atheist are you?â. âIf a loved one dies, they should read philosophyâ. âI do taro, and follow the horoscope, Iâm a Taurus son, Iâm a Leo sunâ (to be fair, some called that one out, but two of five being into astrology??)
Being an atheist just means you dont think a god is real, it's not a replacement for religion, because it isnt one
I have a question though what do some atheists feel about what happens to people after they pass away?
@@mike4space itâs an inevitable part of life. We cherish them in our memory and appreciate that we had the opportunity to meet them, be a part of them, etc. some atheists, instead of grieving at their funeral, they actually hold a cherishing party about how grateful they were to ever have them
@@dyinginsidelol thatâs understandable.. what do they think will happen when people die?
@@mike4space irreligious people, not necessarily atheists, just believe our consciousness is lost to the decomposition of our physical body. Itâll be like before we were ever born.
For many people it is tho - they âconvertâ to aethism. Look at communists for an example. A lot of aethists r very triggered by other peopleâs belief in God
Bro atheistism ain't that deep...we just don't believe in god
Bro most religious ppl I know aren't that deep. We just believe in (a) god/s
No. Atheism is the belief that there is no god. Agnosticism is the belief, that thereâs no way of knowing whether there is a god.
You canât believe in god and still claim to be an atheist, itâs the exact opposite. Unless youâre pastafarian.
@@Watmancro atheism is a lack of belief not a belief itself

@Philippines Ball yeah there's a lot of hypocrisy in religious communities, but there's a lot of hypocrisy in the atheist community, too. I hope more atheists notice that tbh
I didn't know there were atheists out there that treat it almost as if it's its own religion... I always viewed the term "atheist" as a way to describe a mindset rather than a word used to develop its own community.

Ikr lmao she seems very bitter. Her examples of why she doesn't like Christianity were also very extreme to the point where I thought she was the mole
I don't think thats what she's saying. she meant that we shouldn't avoid our grief by turning towards something that isn't real. we have to accept and face our griefs. that's the first step of healing.
@@MercurialMoon that is true, but I don't think that she has the right to tell her friend not to turn to religion for consolation, people should have the choice to turn to whatever makes them feel better when undergoing grief. if turning to Christianity, Hinduism, Buddism, etc makes her friend cope better she should support them regardless and not invalidate their choices.
Emily gave off church girl vibes. I would have been confident to end after the first round.
especially with how preachy she seemed. The "love it" about deconverting people then having to backtrack when she realized the actual atheists dont do that, the "straight up atheist" sounded weird, her sunny disposition was too quirky, all of it made it pretty obvious. Shame, I hate when the mole loses quick
@@stephengrant4841 Iâm a Christian, but I would love to be the mole because I done some research and wouldnât stereotype, I could use that money for college and donate the rest.

@@patrik6872 they're playing a game trying to weed out the christian. so of course they ask questions asking what they know about atheism. It doesnt mean they revolve their lives around it
My family and relatives are so religious and I actually not into any of those thing but they still push me to do all those like I don't like being near god and do all those religious stuffs I feel like those are more like waste of money than felling lively đđ
living life without being religious is not atheism. you are just confused and you didnât make any searches, you didnât even try to find a meaning in life and you straight up go âyup i guess iâm an atheist because iâm not christan/muslim/budist etc. itâs not working like that. making searches does not make it a religion. atheism is a philosophical term, kind of a belief. you believe that there is no god. you believe that you are not believing. if you have no idea about universe and you are escaping to think about it you are not an atheist you are just lost. when a believer attacks you or something you should say someting rational and defend your opinions if thatâs necessary. i mean, atheism is really misunderstood you guys just be so lazy to think about universe and suddenly call yourself atheists. i think you donât even know what you believe. that sucks.

definition of atheist
âa person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of god or godsâ
that describes me. i am an atheist
Iâm really confused these atheists are literally talking about Atheism like itâs a religion which basically contradicts the concept of Atheism
I donât think so, I feel like they were talking about it as a lifestyle. Maybe they talked about it like that to show Christians theyâre not that different from them
I'm an atheists and I thought the same thing. However, I guess if you are gonna do this episode you have to debate like its a religion but even then the things they were saying were really odd to me.
as an atheist, i agree
Absolutely not. Imagine a bunch of guys who're not into sports discussing their lifestyle and the routine they follow to stay fit. Similarly, this conversation brings to light the experiences these people have as an atheist and the positions they have about their beliefs or lack thereof. This is important because I wouldn't describe the two tarot/horoscope guys as atheists because being an atheist entails that we do not believe in unsubstantiated claims and the stuff those guys believe in not only lack any the evidence but also goes against the scientific methods. Some people really need to consider their positions before they start identifying as an atheist.
@@DragonFanngg that example is great :) Iâll add on to it. Imagine a bunch of guys who play football all the time, it wouldnât be very weird if they were to get into a conversation about their favorite fitness authors. Similarly, the atheists here asked about each otherâs favorite books about atheist life
(most atheists should read books about things like the meaning of life because we usually have existential crisesâ about the fact that one day weâre gonna die and have nothing else after that)
"if you're open to hearing about atheism..?" just felt like "hi do have time to talk about our lord and saviour jesus christ?"
All around creepy both ways lol
Idk if this is an America thing, but why are they making it sound like atheism is a religion in and off itself bruh
It might have something to do with some sort of defensiveness because of the way atheists are treated in America?
You do know it was the Christian pretending to be an atheist who said that, right?

I'm Christian and a lot of my friends are gay, but I still have fun with them anyway even though I can't relate to most things they say. legit some of them say "im gay so I can't play the trumpet" đđđ can anybody explain why they say this????
@Scooby Doo - I have no idea why your gay friends say they can't play trumpet. Sexual orientation has no impact upon one's musical ability. I'm a bi woman and play 7 instruments, including 2 saxez, clarinet and oboe. I'm also a profesdional singer, a visual artist and filmmaker.

Riya's story about depression really resonated with me. I remember praying for relief and no one answered.
As an agnostic atheist I definitely don't feel the need to deconvert anyone. That would be just as pushy as a religious person trying to convert me. Faith, or lack thereof, is something very personal.
Although I don't mind having civilised discussions about religion.
I agree with you but I also see where deconverters are coming from. A lot of them used to be religious and in their shedding of that they feel more whole as individuals. It makes sense that they would want others to have that experience as well. Iâm definitely not a fan of the you canât prove god exists so you shouldnât believe in him but I see no harm in challenging the views of someone if it could have a positive impact on them in some way.
just being an open atheist is good enough. I know that for me the reason I was able to admit it is because some people I knew were atheist. It didn't really seem like I had a choice before that. People need to see it's a valid choice and that it doesn't make you a demon lol
@@briannasmith7746 In the converters defense some were taught by ppl who were very legalistic so they can be very harsh, when thatâs all theyâve been taught their whole lives. And some converters (not the forceful ones) came from broken pasts and found God or anything they worship, and wanted others to have the same experience as them. (The reason Iâm replying is for ppl to see both sides of deconverters/converters. Not trying to hate)
@@saigie3908 thank you for your addition! I agree both sides are important and love the reminder that not all converters are forceful, sometimes thatâs hard to remember from all the stories people tell. Conversion/deconversion is typically from a good place and doesnât have to be toxic at all
@@briannasmith7746 Yes, I agree. Thereâs bad ppl in every group. Have a bless day â„ïž
Bruh atheist just means you donât believe in a higher power like god. You donât need books and stuff to know that
@Rahim Ahmed I don't think it's based on "taking things personally" only or at all, it's just so many people who can't pull up some random book about atheism, yet these people can. Except? So someone or more voted that person out...
@Rahim Ahmed he's not taking it personally he's saying it dosen't make sense for example did you stop believing in santa because a book told you to or because you believe that yourself? (This is just an example)
If you grew up in a strict religious household and community and are trying to deconvert reading books about atheists that were previously religious helps because religius trauma is real. It gives you a sense of belonging. That being said you donât need a book but some people seek books or articles and etc to help themselves through the religious trauma
Easiest way to spot the christian, you just say âIf you are a christian speak up... you are lying without telling us and thats a sin... god said do not lieâ

Some of these were the most religious non religious people I've ever seen.
Being an atheist just means you don't have a God, there are many atheists who are bhuddists or even spiritual
@@handsanitizer2457 Fair enough. In my day to day life I guess we just use the term atheist to mean we don't believe in God and we don't think about things like deconverting people etc etc.
I mean itâs a competition. It wouldâve been boring to be like âoh you donât believe in god? Ok youâre goodâ. They have to rely on stereotypes to play the game
Turns out it's not religion that ruins humans but just humans themselves that are tribal beings.
Right! I believe in God yet don't act NOTHING like that... I haven't read the bible in a while nor see it as something you have to do in order to believe yet these people are acting like you must in order to be atheist.
I feel like being the pushy atheist who tries to deconvert others is just as bad as the pushy religious person trying to convert people.
Exactly
can you say that louder for the people in the back
I agree!! We should not deconvert nor convert people who wish not to be
Yup, I never do that. Voicing your opinions in a nice way is fine but being aggressive or demeaning isn't okay.
Also I think a lot of people find comfort in having faith so it's conflicting anyway. But religion has done so much harm too, no doubt about it.
Yeah, I grew up Atheist but i still respect that other people have different believes than me, as long as they leave me alone with that lol
1:15 That's a profile picture an atheist would have. Rarely would a Christian make that their profile pic even for a joke.
The reason I knew it was Emily was when she said "if people are open to hearing about atheism". I'm an atheist going to a private Christian university, and this is EXACTLY how I would imagine they would try and sell this. Emily's choice of phrasing made it sound like she saw atheism as a complete worldview that you can summarize in a way that would be similar to how a lot of my friends make the case for believing in god to me. It's a subtle unconscious slip up that reveals how her mind is operating and the moment she said that, I knew.
Also, they all seem like really chill people I'd love to talk to and chill with!
@Robert Charles III - If you don't mind me asking, why would you, an atheist, choose to go to a Christian college? I would never want to be durrounde by religious people, practices, symbols or course content, especially for 3-4 years, when my critical thinking skills are still developing.
@@wholeshebang1 I personally felt confident enough in my critical thinking skills to allow for a more challenging environment. If it makes the person feel better, they should do whatever they want. Just because theyâre an atheist doesnât mean that they canât try to see if religion makes them feel better. If they found out theyâre religious that way, let them do it. If they see that religion really isnât for them, great, they learned a thing about themselves. But as long as the person feels better, it doesnât matter if they turned to religion or not. They canât just âread some philosophyâ like Katie said. She also said "love it" when they asked about deconvertion, and then changed her answer a little when it was her turn to talk
I disagree, if I was an agnostic, I would not have participated in the video, as I would have thought they were looking for atheists. Maybe it's different in America, but in Theology in the UK I was taught that there is theism, agnosticism, and atheism, with agnosticism being undecided/in the middle, I would not categorise them together, as I feel that is unfair on all three parties, it's almost like defining agnosticism as 'an atheist in the closet', which agnosticism is not.
Side note, I thought it was Katie, but damn when I noticed Joey's cross earrings I thought I had him! Baffles me why he would wear them as an atheist, he must have got them as a present from his parents đ
@@mikelounge4325 agnostic is a branch of atheism like how there are different branches of Christianity who believe varying degrees of the same thing - Methodist, Catholic etc.
@@juliannaevierivera Yeah, that's where there is a differentiation with the definitions. I was taught agnosticism was someone who neither believed nor disbelieved in a god, whereas an atheist is someone who does not believe in a god. A perfect agnostic (as if there ever could be such a thing as perfect) in terms of the definition I learnt would be someone who was perfectly in the middle, and so it would not be fair on theists to put all the agnostics in the branch or 'camp' of atheism, as the perfect agnostic would be as close to theism as they were to atheism. It's all just language games, of course.

That phrasing sounds like a CHRISTIAN.
I'm tempted to just quote "This is the oppressors language, yet I need it to talk to you," but perhaps it would be more appropriate to paraphrase Northrop Frye and say instead 'we write from what we know'. People who grew up around religion often speak about Atheism using a similar vernacular to that of the believers of the religion they rejected; we even see a conscious effort NOT to do that in this very video as someone try's to backtrack from calling something 'enlightening'. Anyone who code switches on a daily basis can tell you slip ups like that will occur when trying to translate from the vernacular you heard 80% of your life and the one you have more recently adopted, and that slipping will be even more frequent when there is no one around reinforcing the idea 'we don't talk like that'.

Since atheism isn't a religion, just a lack of religion, there's a large amount of atheists who don't like atheists who treat it almost like a religion with holy books and things you have to know and gate-keeping.
It's especially annoying for female atheists because a lot of the people who are part of that movement are pretty misogynistic and interpret you not liking them with you not being a 'real atheist'.
There is one test of if you are an atheist: do you believe there is a higher power? If no, then you're an atheist. You don't have to be positive either. There are plenty of agnostic atheists who say 'well I don't think it's likely, but there is no way to know either way'.
It's a really broad group that doesn't necessarily feel connected to each other.
