  • In this video, Tierra! Massive Waves Sailing to CUBA, we complete our long 6 day passage from St. Martin to the country of Cuba not without incident crushing our wisker pole attachment and negotiating some very large waves in 30 knots of wind!
    Nawal gets sea sick and our Jib comes loose and flogs wildly...

    In August of 2017 we sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is our CZcams sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and my partner Nawal as we navigate the globe. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard full time. Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos!

    That is a tough sail, especially when gear breaks and you are left at the mercy of the waves. By the sounds of your narrative, you are now both "Salty sailors". Keep up the good work on your videos.

    I second the comment on sailing honestly with transparency. Good stuff. Don't let the negative comments bother you. They probably woke up realizing their out of coffee and were too grumpy. When you finally get to Cuba you'll be laughing about how tough that passage was and you're learning!

    Wow, guys! The narrative in this episode was awesome!! So descriptive and exciting and totally reflective of what sailing is all about. I'm glad you guys make it safely and with smiles on your face. My favourite episode to date!

    TY for sayin it like it is! The fantastic and the oooh fook. Ignore the key board captains, 90% bs. Chat with the knowledgeable cruisers that are actually out there if you want a little advice. TC HF!

    Hey guys, wow it sounds like a crazy trip. Nawal you're much stronger than me girl.. I would have been hanging over board the whole time with sea sickness. That one day on the boat with you guys had me going down below for a bit, and the wind was nothing like that. We hope you guys are coming home soon for a while. As much as things are going wrong and breaking on you, Dan you're a pretty resourceful guy, your going to manage just fine. Stay safe guys we love you 💕

    Thanks for the honest account of what sailing is all about. This especially when you have the unexpected crew member called Murphy with you! I have to make this comment after now catching up on all your videos. I find the video quality is not the best. I don’t know if it is the filter you use or resolution however it maybe something to look into. Keep it up!!!

      Maybe they choose to not have 10,000 in video production gear, you think?

    Really love the honesty and transparency of your channel. It’s a nice view of the reality of the emotional roller coaster for those of us who intend to cruise and unexpected situations arise. Great to see you both can put tough situations behind you and enjoy yourselves.
    @Dan - many of us wish they could convince their significant other to cast off... you’re one of the lucky ones 😉.

    Please don't take this comment as criticism, I am a total noob when it comes to sailing, and I am trying to learn. Would you say that all of the gear failures were from mistakes you made, old equipment, improperly maintained, or a combination? Also, if possible, what problems were you having with the autopilot? And would a wind vane have worked better in those situations? I am hoping to be boat shopping in about a year, so want to get as much info from people like you, out there doing it, on a budget similar to what I want to do!

    • @SailingBalachandra
      @SailingBalachandra  Před 3 lety

      Great questions. 90% of our gear failures are from damage from years of sailing. Stainless steel rigging will get stress cracks from years of abuse and these are very difficult to detect. Sails are meant to be used up and replaced. The autopilot is working great now, we just needed to adjust the response setting. We didn't play with it too much in the past.

    Wow a lot to deal with. Dan I’ve been trying to buy a moitessier hat 2 for a few months but can’t find any for-sale. Do you have any tips where I can get one?

    And you’re not tethered all the time in a 6 day passage where essentially you are single handing all the time?????

      Great comment- we tether in anytime we leave the cockpit in any medium to big seas
