    In August of 2017 we sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is our CZcams sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and my partner Nawal as we navigate the globe. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard full time. Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos!

    Thanks for the video! Very useful. Some people suggest plugging one ear only. They swear doing that ahead of boarding does the trick.

    I have heard that wearing only 1 ear plug (not ear bud) supposedly works because it confuses your equilibrium.

    Love you guys! And the leafy green stuff so I should be good to go when we finally hit the water. Thank you once again for the practical and valuable info. Cheers!

      It works. If you do the gulf stream and the boat starts to roll with swell on the beam i would take a dramamine. Swell on the beam can really get you queezy

    Great video, useful practical information and shared experience.
    For me ginger candies, ( a lot of ginger, and then sugar) seem like the best overall preventative. Eat just one. I've had homemade ginger candy handed out on board small boats, including in Ireland in about 8 foot seas. On the boat trip to Skellig Michael all the passengers, and the deck crew, ate one piece just before heading out - no body got sick. I think this works much better than those overpriced capsules, and I think you can get down more ginger than eating shreds and pieces cut right off the root. Trader Joe's in the States sells them that are exactly like the homemade ones that work so well.
    I've been a sea kayaker for 15 years. It just seems that there are certain combinations of wave patterns that make me sea sick. It's not roughness, just certain conditions. I go from paddling a consistent 3.8 knots to maybe 0.6 knots, I barf and laugh at myself, slowly take another stroke. Soon as I'm inside the breakwater - gone. Maybe like reefing, you should take ginger or Dramamine it as soon as you think about it. I will take a quarter Dramamine tablet if I even think about sea sickness on a water day. A full tablet hits me like a tranquilizer dart.

      Tranquilizer is accurate! We'll look for those ginger candies- makes perfect sense. I have friends who are sea kayak instructors and they told me people always get sick out there. When we did liferaft training we both felt seasick just sitting in the raft in a wavepool. Thanks for the info :)

    Don't have any marijuana on your boat if in US waters, even if it's legal in the US state waters you are in. The Coasties can technically seize your boat. Great video, thanks for sharing. Would also suggest people try whatever drug they are going to take well before sailing so you know how it will effect you. I've been on passages where the crew was useless because the anti seasickness meds knocked them out.

      Very good points. Yes, this is what my doctor told me about ondanzetron - try it out on land or on the hook first in case things get weird and you need a hospital...

    Another CZcamsr has found that putting an earplug in the opposite ear of your dominant hand helps with avoiding seasickness. Worth a try?

    A few times I have gotten land sick after an extended time at sea. But it didn’t hit me until I got to the airport which I went to directly after getting ashore and was sitting waiting for my flight

    "Flush the heads out before leaving port!" --good advice, but check with the port authority first, as they may have an opinion on this. I know the creators know this, but as this is a video for newbies, might as well make a note of it for their sake.

    Hey guys, very interesting video. We were wondering if sea sickness would be an issue after being on the boat for so long, so, it can still hit you at any time? And about the leafy greens that are legal in canada, if you have a prescription are you able to bring with you for health reasons? Oh, one more thing... Love the dance moves guys 💗

    • @SailingBalachandra
      @SailingBalachandra  Před 3 lety +1

      It goes away after sailing for a month or two as long as you keep sailing once in a while. It will come on if you go below at the start of a sail for more than 5 minutes or so... can't travel with salad unfortunately... not worth the risk, but in Canadian waters you're 'green lit' just don't operate a motor vehicle. (Boats included)

    you are not supposed to look at the horizon when your seasick. I was in the navy and I was at the helm. they tell you that's the worst thing you can do, and trust me, it is.
