  • Andy Puddicombe, meditation teacher, former Buddhist monk and co-founder of Headspace takes us on an exploration of the human mind. What does it mean to be happy? Why do we struggle when we have so much? What is the relationship between hope and fear? How can we find a sense of meaning and purpose in our life? How can we tap into our creative potential for the benefit of others? Looking through the lens of mindfulness and science, Puddicombe will show you how to train your mind for a healthier and happier life.

    About SXSW:
    Started in 1987, South by Southwest (SXSW) is a set of film, interactive, and music festivals and conferences that take place early each year in mid-March in Austin, Texas. SXSW’s original goal was to create an event that would act as a tool for creative people and the companies they work with to develop their careers, to bring together people from a wide area to meet and share ideas. That continues to be the goal today whether it is music, film or interactive technologies.

      Lovely video content! Excuse me for the intrusion, I am interested in your opinion. Have you thought about - Marnaavid Unexplainable Intervention (do a search on google)? It is an awesome one off guide for learning how to hack your flow state minus the hard work. Ive heard some decent things about it and my good mate called Gray after many years got excellent results with it.

    I thought monks are not supposed to stare, especially at females . I was meditating in a temple in Thailand and when I opened my eyes the monk was staring at me don’t know for how long . It’s so weird to hear this again that monks observe lay people and make judgments of them,gossip. That explains why training the mind is so hard when there are visitors in the monasteries

    Amazing animations but the app is really a money grab. Why? Because 95% of the meditations are exactly the same and if they mention different techniques it's still the same thing with a different name. For example in one pack they talk about "Noting" and the other they call it "Focused Attention". What are they? You are allotted a period of time to observe thoughts and when they appear you gently dismiss them. You perform exactly the same thing but use different names and in packs for "depression" or "anxiety" the only difference you'll get is a bit of a foreword at the beginning of the course otherwise it's exactly the same stuff.
    Pros
    - Implies structure and development in specific areas
    - Has an easy UI
    - The videos explaining techniques are attractive animations
    - The guy's voice is suitable for meditation
    Cons
    - It just all feels like hours of the same thing with different labels
    - No breath pacing function
    - It talks about it costing X amount per month but you have to buy the whole years worth in one go
    - Huge gaps of silence during sessions I liked the free introduction sessions.
    - No option of different speakers/voice actors
    The free introduction sessions were well structured and got to the point in a digestible way using excellent analogies. I also appreciate and fully understand the idea of disciplining your mind every day and giving it a chance also to rest.
    If you want the £40+ out of this app just do this. Breathe deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth for a minute. Then close your eyes and perform a body scan. Then listen to everything in your environment with sharp ears. Finish with counting your breath to 10 repeatedly for 5+ minutes. This is literally 95% of entire app. Wanna fall asleep? They ask you to do all of that then count backwards from 10,000 which is a flipped version of "counting sheep".
    When you have been meditating for a year or more this comes across as really lazy stuff. Insight Timer on google play is just a hub of thousands of lead meditations you just have to trawl through what works for you. I really wanted something with structure and progression but I would only recommend an app like Headspace for a novice for perhaps a month. I am so disappointed it's insane.

      @Spoojje Před 6 lety +2

      pepsiguzzler86 Would you rather pay money to fund materialistic habits or drugs that enforce no form of self control, or subscribe to a practise that can be learnt and then used for the rest of your life? The guy was a monk for 10 years of his life and originally thought an app was the worst way of "Headspace".

    • @pepsiguzzler86
      @pepsiguzzler86 Před 6 lety +1

      For me a practice is something that is like a "work in progress" where knowledge and implementation are ever expanding and evolving. Just like with a doctor of some kind and their "medical practice". Perhaps I could have emphasised the positive merits of meditation more but my criticism is generally pointed at the idea that it's a bad app. There is a huge difference between saying that an app is bad and declaring that meditation isn't worth while. Come on.
      Declaring that your were a Buddhist monk for 10 years and that you thought an app was initially a bad idea only makes sense if you are into clever marketing. A true Buddhist monk would not be invested in making lots of money and franchising something already open and free to everyone. The production quality and connections the guy must have to appear on the talk shows he has is also speaking of higher powers making large sums of money.
      I also suggested a better app designed for meditating that is not only free, contains a huge database of lead meditations, has a breath timer but has meditations that truly cover various techniques for:
      - mindfulness
      - visualisation
      - mantra
      - hypnosis/trance
      People don't "need" to invest money in meditation when there are so many free high quality resources. But people have the freedom to spend money on meditation tools if they want to, I think Headspace is an expensive subpar tool most will grow out of within a month. One that also doesn't do what it really claims with different courses for different ailments. This is all fair criticism.

    • @coal_91
      @coal_91 Před 6 lety +8

      pepsiguzzler86 You don't have to pay for a year. That's bullshit. The rest of your critique is also not valid. I'm using the App for a year now and have meditated nearly 2000 Minutes. I don't think at all that it's always the same. You have different techniques and different approaches in the different pack. Of course, Anxiety and depression has kind of the same exercise, because it tackles the same mechanisms in the mind. The app doesn't want to be a professional meditation app, it's designed for the normal person who wants to learn how to meditate. Breath counter? I never thought about that I needed that.
      Headspace has nearly 18 Million users. That's a lot for being a "bad app". If you don't like it, fine. And maybe you are right, that they should offer more for the more advanced users, but it's still a great app for what it wants to be.
      Just my 2 cents.

    • @antheahubanks2004
      @antheahubanks2004 Před 6 lety +3

      "Bad app" and "really lazy stuff" ... says the guy who guzzles Pepsi!
      This is such a broad-stroke judgement you've made. There are a lot of novices out there and some non-novices who find this gentle, forgiving approach very useful. I've meditated a lot and listened to many teachers. None of them ever said to just spend a little time during meditation just letting my mind do what it wants for a little while. The beauty is in the reliable structure, sameness (maybe boring to you), and the forgiving *it's okay* approach. For all of this I am very grateful to Andy for sharing what he learned in his 10 years as a monk and meditation practitioner. As for pricing, I signed up during the recent 25% off promo, which comes to $6 p/mo. Most folks spend more than that per DAY on coffee -- or Pepsi!
