What you're doing now is what I wanted this series to be, instead of just "do you see a tactic" it's actually a bit more challenging of positions that are either defensive ideas or positional ones.
These were the best weekly puzzles yet! Challenging and intriguing. Thank you so much, NM Nelson! (I got most of them wrong 😅, but I learned a lot from my mistakes because you explained the positions very well)
@@anewfuture if there is a tactic like this in a game. Then I would prefer the promotion and make the opponent realise there promotion was pointless. Then have a little evil giggle to myself 😆. Nothing wrong with either, of course
I didn’t quite see all the continuations but this is the first time I found the right initial move (in position 1). Definitely looked like the queen needed to get moved into position first before any attack could really begin
Nice subtleties in these. I should probably spend more time looking them over so I don't feel like such a dunce missing them all. And thanks for turning the music down so it's more matching your voice volume.
Thanks Nelson! Your videos are great and I always look forward to them, keep it going!! In the last position, I couldn't figure out whether there was any difference between Kf1 and Kg1. Are both moves winning by the same idea?
@@roblodocus2539 Having plugged this in to stockfish Kf1 is slightly faster than Kg1 with correct play, technically all moves are winning except f4, but I think Nelson really wanted to see people get the triangulation idea.
You trickster :D! I thought I got the last one and yet failed so badly! I didn't saw black Ke4 move after f4+. Thank you for explaining the opposition and how to maintain it.
Loved these, missed position 1 found black's defense of Kh8 followed by Rg8 but couldn't figure what to play once sacrifices didn't work (tried Qh5) Position 2 was great, and I love it even more now that you showed some of the additional potential tactics in the position (for example I couldn't find why Rf7 didn't work though it just looked less natural than Kg2). In position 3 is there some reason Kf1 doesn't work or is it equivalent to Kg1 (when looking at the puzzle I assumed if anything the opposite were true)?
this was a fun exercise. position 2 i didnt have any other plan other than Rf7 I didnt think of Kg2 iuts really funny sometimes how you might just miss a possible move and not even consider it
Who am I to argue with stockfish but one of the things that I didn't like in the first position is after qh4 black can play f5 and as far as I can tell you lose a knight which isn't the end of the world but it's going to slow your attack down trying to dig the king out of that corner.
Well at least I'm not the only one who got fooled by Rh7. And very interesting to see the Kf1 difference between the levels. I probably wouldn't have found Kf1 if I didn't know it was a puzzle
1000 rated got all of the best moves. I would 1400 if I dint blunder so my queen every game. I literally makes to many blunders but my strategy is soolid.
Got 1 and 3, although honestly I didn't really calculate all of 1's mating attack stuff, I just saw that black couldn't take the rook after Qg4, which means that, if black defends correctly, white can just slide the rook out of the attack, which they couldn't do before. And for 3, it helps if you've heard of the term "distant opposition" before, making Kf1 the obvious choice. (Although, tbh, I didn't realize Kg1 would also work) Said Rf7 on 2 because the attack on f2 and threat on f3 seemed really bothersome. Yep, completely missed that tactic, holy shit. Kg2 actually works?! It's such a quiet move that doesn't seem to immediately change anything other than getting out of the Nf3 check, but it does so without tying up the rook, so you CAN take the bishop in response to Rxa2. Wow.
Position 3 is all about OPOSITION!!!! Kf1 woot! I don't care that I got the other 2 wrong, but getting the 3rd one right just made my day!!! :) Study your endgames my fellow low elo doods!!! You will get so many wins if you have any endgame knowledge cause it's the last thing people decide to learn about and you will have all the advantage!!!
Yes, it's more logical than Kg1. Usually you want to position the king on the same file as the opposite king so you can see the opposition clearer. I mean, if Kg1, you are forced to go next on the f file anyway next move... why not do it from the first time to have more options? Play Kf1 in a game and there's less chance you mess up from there.
@@Kokurorokuko He can't shuffle. If he tries that, you move forward with the king and pawn. Your king needs to get to e3, so you can push f4 and he's forced to move back as you cover the rank.
Obvious that people are looking at it as chess puzzle, in normal game in first excercise, I'd just move the rook out of harms way. -1 is good enough for 1300 I guess
By the way, I actually submitted Re1 with the reasoning that if I were going to lose the rook, I wanted to get rid of the dark-squared bishop so I get a nice outpost on d6 lol
I really enjoy these videos but I noticed that I can just watch then pause briefly and get the same effect of testing myself as opposed to filling out those forms. I don't know how many people are doing it like this but just to let you know that I like the video and format...even though I'm a bit to lazy to fill out the forms.
The title should be shorter, in caps, and more thrilling, like gothamchess, seems it does the trick, something like “ QUIZ 12 - WITH A TWIST” and idk add a twist or something 😂
What about this kind of title: "Find the next move! Compare your skills to Elo ranked players and Stockfish" This go straight to the point, and tell what to do. "Elo" and "Stockfish" for trying to reach peoples who are seaching with those words
Love the fact this series now has hard problems. Learning a lot.
What you're doing now is what I wanted this series to be, instead of just "do you see a tactic" it's actually a bit more challenging of positions that are either defensive ideas or positional ones.
A3 is the 2nd best move in position 1..damn those 1000's were upto something😂
I actually voted for that because it kinda deals with black threats but you still have the potential on kingside
You might be one of the best chess youtubers I've ever seen! Great job!
These were the best weekly puzzles yet!
Challenging and intriguing.
Thank you so much, NM Nelson!
(I got most of them wrong 😅, but I learned a lot from my mistakes because you explained the positions very well)
Very instructive and a great refresher. I include this in my daily training regimen
14:04 Personally I think Kf3 is a much simpler and foolproof way to win.
@@anewfuture you think it's more satisfying than allowing the promotion and taking the queen?
@@anewfuture if there is a tactic like this in a game. Then I would prefer the promotion and make the opponent realise there promotion was pointless. Then have a little evil giggle to myself 😆. Nothing wrong with either, of course
For educational purposes it's better to show the promotion and how to deal with it. I prefer Kf3 too.
Absolutely
@Alpha and Omega Why would you calculate any of that when it is obvious that Kf3 wins immediately without need to calculate anything
this is great love to see some more of these and try them out
he actually removed that jingle

Thanks, Joe! Yeah, both of those have the same idea and would work!
Would Kf1 be better though as we can navigate round to e2 if the black king doesn’t go to f4?
@@roblodocus2539 Having plugged this in to stockfish Kf1 is slightly faster than Kg1 with correct play, technically all moves are winning except f4, but I think Nelson really wanted to see people get the triangulation idea.

Learned so much
2/3 this week for me! Got positions 1 and 3 correct but thought Rf7 in position 2.

got me with the opposition, learned a lot
Nice tutorial with the chess puzzles.
These are sooooo good. I haven't played chess in years.
9:29 a classic wooden shield formation
I'd be interested in hearing some of the explanations people gave in the forms, whether correct or not.
This is a great idea, I very much second this!

2/3 not bad i need to work on my KP end games , that position 2 was hard work
He blew my mine with some of these I didn’t even know how he got out this position
Wow the trick with the opposition was really clever and I totally forgot that this tactic exists by "wasting" turns
Could've swear position 1 is a positions I've seen before, perhaps when playing puzzles on lichess

I think you should add a GM/IM classification cause some people who do the quiz are over 400 points over your highest group.
Well at least I'm not the only one who got fooled by Rh7. And very interesting to see the Kf1 difference between the levels. I probably wouldn't have found Kf1 if I didn't know it was a puzzle
For the second position, I played pawn g4 to trap the king
When will the episode 2 of Guess the Move be out?
Wow... got #2 right for the correct reasons!!! Learned a lot from the other two puzzles. Keep up the good work!
position 3 Kf1 was my immediate idea. ive learned about opposition
Nice video

lets go !
I felt bad about picking a3 on the first one based on his reaction to it but Stockfish said it was second best so aye
At 6:11 why are the ranks in the table 1, 2, and 5?
I love this intro!
For pos 2 I had bishop to f6
Finallllly I got more than one correct answer !!
Qf5 check wins as well
nice
I enjoy your chess quiz.

For the first puzzle.
It only took my a single second to find Qg4 lmao. I failed all the others though
You played Kg1 instead of the fan favorite Kf1. Any difference?
Kg1 is one move slower, but as long as you see the winning plan it doesnt really matter

0 of 3 last time, 3 of 3 this time

first problem I would've played Nd6 to threaten to take the rook on f8.... hhhhm
You should give us the point if we are within 2 points of Stockfish's evaluation 🤣 JK
Position 2 d6 defends rook
Why aren't you showing the win lose board?
4:37 why not Nf6+? is that not just mate in 2
Holy shit, I actually got one right!
Start it again pls
So does the move Kf1 win in the last position?

3:35 How do you not have anything you can literally fork the king and queen.
Edit: and you also get tempo on the rook
knight can be taken by the bishop
Q to f5 would accomplish the same thing

Rook from a to c.
Dude you missed Nf6, gxf6, Bh6, Re8, Qg4+, Kh8, Qg7 mate bro.
That thumbnail would be checkmate, but there’s two rooks there, so it’s not checkmate
leads to smothered mate with Nf7
rxb7

Obvious that people are looking at it as chess puzzle, in normal game in first excercise, I'd just move the rook out of harms way. -1 is good enough for 1300 I guess
The b4 bishop also hits e1 so moving the rook still loses the exchange.
