Me as patzer: lose rook & bishop because it's a blunder and click the resign button Nelson as chess master: not "lose" rook & bishop because it's a sacrifice for quadruple brilliant moves with beautiful checkmate
The one game that gave me the greatest satisfaction was not a blitz or rapid game, but a standard four hour game. It wasn't a straight forward win. I had moved up a group in my club, now facing players who were all between 200 and 400 rating points stronger than I. One day I came expecting a thrilling game against a player that I thought I might have a small chance to beat, but he had cancelled the game, so the club chairman set me up to play someone else whom I was supposed to meat in a later round, because his opponent wasn't there either. Now this was a player who had always beaten the crap out of me in every game we ever played, so I wasn't happy about that! I now call the game "The Black Horses", because in the opening he made an unfortunate pawn push which allowed my knights to solidly park themselves on f6 and e5, rather dominating the centre. While he still made attempts to attack on the king's flank, I made some progress on the queen's side and won a pawn, and a little later, because he was getting low on time, I was able trade a rook for a knight and a bishop. My queen came back in time to help not only protecting my king, but I was able to open the g-file and launch an attack on the king's side and push his queen far away. And by then my knights were totally dominating the board! I threatened forks everywhere! His rooks were not developed, and his king was stranded between them, he had no pawns to defend, and now my rook invaded the second rank. Unfortunately he resigned just as I was about to sac the queen and mate him with the knights. The game was probably not very correct, but WHAT a victory, and what a feeling to completely crush my most dreaded opponent! Of course I lost the next time we played, but I was cool with that.
Thank you very much for sharing. Enjoyed that game a lot. And with those time controls... wow. Very instructive. You have a knack for explaining your very logical thought process. Hope you have a great day. Thank you for doing what you do.
Nelson, I've been following your channel for some time now and this is legit the best game I've seen from you. And in a blitz game that too! Tal is definitely proud :)
A lot of your good moves involved trading pieces, which I’m always reluctant to to as an ~800 player. Maybe that’s good for me at this stage, but it’s always great to see brilliant moves that lose a piece - and more importantly the explanation of why they were good.
I'm just now starting to graduate from being able to work my way into/through a pawns and kings endgame toward finding winning moves and checkmates in the middlegame. As I do so I begin to really see the validity to the idea that "good position leads to good tactics" (Fischer's quote?). This game appears to be a good example of that. Following common principles to put pieces on good squares, and then gradually opening and finding the tactical opportunities. Thanks for your accessible teaching and communicative clarity, Nelson.
Great game! Also good explanation for people around my ELO range, and the video is kinda interactive, letting us, the viewers, try and find the moves. I found the 2nd brilliant move because there were little options for black. Great video as always Nelson!
That's one of the main reasons we all play chass, it's the continuous hope to create a masterpiece keeps our motivation and we always hope that our next game will be brilliant and will bring us satisfaction. But if we lose or it's a draw or losing on time or a not that impressive win, we say 'ok maybe next time ' and after many games, each of us finally gets a chance to shine, the important thing is not to give up.
Absolute insanity. I probably have around a hundred or more brilliants across the various time controls but never multiple in one game that’s some real next level stuff! Especially considering the beautiful finish on that attack. Gj bro 🙌🏼
At 8:40 you say you can't do anything with your bishop, but you actually have the fun move Bxf3+. If Kxf3 there's a forced mate since now you can take the bishop, Qxf6+ and the king is in no man's land.
im pretty proud for finding the m4 and Bb4+, though i definitely did not find the continuation properly so i guess i found it by mistake. i was just thinking pinning the queen and the extra tempo should solve the problem. i thought of Rd5!! it felt like that was the move but i could not think of why. though its obviously a lot easier i dont have any pressure, and i know theres a move so its a lot easier to find when you know theres something. especially if its brilliant since that means you are somehow leaving a piece able to be hung most likely. i didnt think of Bxe4 at all, i was satisfied with Bg4. if white takes then i thought Qxe4+, King has to go to f2 (though im realising now i missed bishop blocks which is probably why the line doesn't work), Nxf4#. if white doesnt take then i thought i was good because of the pin, and skewer potential, as well as the queen being able to take, but i dont think that ends of working i couldnt find a line so i guess thats probably another reason why it doesnt work.
Even though i didn't find the mating pattern, i did find all the brilliant moves! Took me a couple minute though, would have never found the in a 3 min game lol. Also i was wondering if Bc2+ would also have worked instead of Bd3. The idea is that if the queen takes its mate in one, and if the king takes its the same idea as shown in the video.
For me it was this one game where my king technically took 19 points. Basically I gave my opponent options to trade all our high pieces. Before that even happened I realized I could get a queen with my pawns because of where they were on the board. Me getting a queen with the pawn was like 30 moves away. I couldn't believe it because the person I played with made every move I wanted them to move for the 30 moves and had no clue they were playing exactly how I wanted them to play.

If the opponent doesn't bring his knight to e5.. Then you can give him a cheque by bishop b6 and win the queen for a rook 😍
