I did enjoy the famous position theme. Could definitely do other themes in the future like maybe even episodes on specific players where they play a really cool move to either win or just transform the position into a winning endgame.

Themes are cool! I'm down for more. And you can vary between "fluffy" themes like famous games and "mechanical" ones, like forks or something.

Solo bishop mates like in that first puzzle are just awesome.

  • @buffalodebill7986

The first one was quite easy - I spotted gxh7+ almost immediately after I figured g7+ was good, but not good enough (sticking to that Lasker's saying of 'keep searching for a better move').
I do not count in the second one, as I know this game by heart (one of my favourite games & Paul Morphy was the best there ever was / is / shall be).
The third one - I vaguely recalled having seen the game, so the solution was a combination of recalling the game's finish from memory and confirming it by quick scan of the board.
A nice brain-teaser for my late evening anyway 🙂 (= yes, please, keep these going on, it's fun)

Quiz 3 was the easiest. Puzzles always put you on a side where there's a way out or mate opportunity. This means that the immediate threat of check from black requires a decisive move, which is usually to put black in check. There's 2 reasons the queen sacrifice is the only possible move (even if you don't know where to go after it):
    1) There's no way to get rid of the queen without coming out in a worse position.
    2) There's only one possible move that puts black in check.
I get that tactics puzzles are good practice that help you recognize patterns, but sometimes I feel like I'm practicing logic more than chess.

I think themes are a great idea! You could also add a final question asking what the theme was, and reveal how many people got it right at the end of the video.

Themes are a cool idea. Famous players could be an interesting theme in my opinion. For example, "solve these Capablanca endgames" could be a good theme if you're ever feeling mean. You could also turn the tables on that one guy who submitted a Tal game to Stump the Chump.

My logic in position 3 was "Black has an unstoppable mate, so I need a check. The only check is Qxd7, so Qxd7+?? it is!"

I've studied the Opera game and I still got it wrong. :|
I like the idea of themes, but needs to be subtle enough that we can't clue into it and use that as a hint for the puzzles. Also, you could add a question to guess the theme, too.

correct me if i'm wrong but in position 3 black's last move was moving its knight apparently which a gigantic blunder if you ask me because if black moved its queen to g2 instead of that move it would be checkmate
i'm a noob at chess and the players that played this game are extremely good so that makes the above mentioned blunder a truly truly horrible one

I got them all but I've seen position 2 before so I half-remembered the move. Position three was beautiful tho. I saw the move pretty quickly because it was a puzzle and I was looking for tactics, but it took be a while to see why it worked.

So for position two - am I missing something? You didn’t talk about bxh6 and that’s where I ended up. Anyone that can talk that one through? It also feels like black made a mistake in the real game with queen e6 moving the queen away from being able to defend the backrank.
