- More than 10,000 people named Bob have entered the world of sports. Today, there are only nine. Bobs are special people, and in losing them to retirement, we stand to lose more than we might imagine.
P.S. This is the 1930s high school basketball game Jon was talking about, at the 6:38 mark: • The H. V. Porter Films...

"But he was a Bob. He played a note in this symphony. He mattered."
That was unexpectedly motivational.
I teared up a little
When you see a Bob, you help a Bob.
DUDE. the second I scrolled down to the comments and started to read your comment, the guy in the vid literally just started saying the exact same one... I'm scared.
That was the tear jerker
I read this right as he said this, damn.
This guy is a clown, he didn’t even mention Bob Ruth, LeBob James, Bob Montana, Kareem Abdul JaBob, or Barry Bobs smh
Lol at Kareem Abdul Ja Bob
Don't forget hockey greats such as Wayne Bobsky.
Also, no mention of Bob Nobobski, who just ended his NBA-career ("National Bob Association") after 21 years at at the Dallas Bobmicks.
Most of those will be in the next part I'm sure. Bob Ruth was overrated.
Don't forget about Michael JorBob
I love how he exclusively refers to every bob as "Bob" and never by just their last name. Like when he describes Bob Fitzsimmons vs. Jack Johnson he says "Bob vs. Johnson" instead of "Fitzsimmoms vs. Johnson." It adds yet another layer to the Bob unity
I'm commenting on this to remind you to rewatch the long form Dorktowns and Chart Parties
@@toilet_cleaner_man lol, thank you. Scorigami and History of the Falcons are already in my watch later playlist 😎
I would’ve loved to see a video about the famous Jack’s in history, for obvious reasons. Like “Bob,” most people called “Jack” aren’t Jack on the their birth certificate. Usually “Jo(h)nathan” but instead of John, some go by Jack. Not me, though. The name on my birth certificate is Jack.
People apparently think this is so uncommon I’ve received three separate first paychecks at jobs made out to Jo(h)nathan. I couldn’t cash them, because that’s not me.
Maybe I’m biased (lol) but I feel like I would like the name Jack even if it wasn’t my own. I feel like a special snowflake, in a world of John’s and occasionally James’ masquerading as Jacks? I’m
the real deal.
Reminds me of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

I bet Bob Cyclone had some good stories, I also bet he loved to talk about how he used to be a professional boxer lol

This thought is oddly affecting for me. Each Bob touched upon in this project had hundreds, maybe thousands of stories to tell, and we were lucky enough to hear just one.
"What have we learned? Absolutely Nothing. Less than nothing. That's just the way I like it."
Never change, Jon
I love scrolling through the comments while watching and happening upon comments about sections I watched seconds before.
What I learned, is to only watch five minutes of it and think the same. Garbage....
Wait... what... was I supposed to agree?
"What did we learn? Absolutely nothing. Less than nothing! That's just the way I like it."
That's it that's the show
That moment when you're scrolling thru comments, read a quote, and wonder Hrmm i wonder what point in the video that is, then 5 seconds later you hear that same quote. Mmmm spicy
Hey everybody, quick story about Bob Cousy in Blue Chips. I got work as a production assistant for an upcoming documentary on the NBA 75th season. We had to interview Bob Cousy, currently in his 90s. He told a ton of stories but he talked about the free throws in blue chips while we were setting up.
According to Bob, he hit 21 in a row between all of the takes. Now i can't confirm it for a fact, but he was very self deferential and humble, not one to brag. So personally I believe him.
that’s amazing man thanks for sharing that story. also awesome you got to work on that i bet it was a great experience

And that didn't work either.
Rest in Power, Bob.
That's such a badass quote too. I would've never known about Bob Gibson had it not been for Jon, and when he passed that sting hit hard, now knowing what an absolute beast he was.
"Throughout his entire life, absolutely nothing and nobody on Earth could stop Bob Gibson. So they moved the Earth itself, and that didn't work either."

He's pretty good.
"...this completely arbitrary and unasked for cross section"
I think Jon Bois just summed up his entire concept in 8 words. He's so freaking good that he captivates us with topics that are otherwise entirely meaningless.
Second. To all of this. Well said.
As someone going by the name "Bob Bob" how can you call this crisis meaningless?
@@blakecarrigan4068 exactly
I laughed super hard at that comment

One of Bob Cyclone's losses was to Larry Boardman whom had just two fights before going up against him. Larry would then go on to have a 45-10-1 career record, defeat multiple lightweight champions in his career, and peak as the #2 lightweight contender in the world.
Man, I kinda wonder if we might also be in a Larry Emergency
So I was rewatching this video today, and decided to look up Bob Gibson to see some of what he's been up to since baseball. I found out that he literally died two days ago, on October 2nd, 2020. Rest in peace to one of the greatest pitchers who has ever lived.
"Player B tried this reckless maneuver known as 'doing something'"

hey I know that guy. Bob.
He doesnt really leave. His videos are like an hour long? You think he can do this every week?
"Who's your favorite boxer?"
"Box Cyclone"
"Haven't seen him"
"Me neither"
I can't explain why, but the part where Jon says that if someone goes by Bob, it's a safe bet that someone really loves them deeply moved me. Something about it just seems so poignant.
"Bob, where's your bat? You're making this difficult, Bob."
I just noticed it's actually in the picture, but face on to the camera. Incredible.
It sucks having to wait for more Jon Bois. But then Jon delivers these 40+ minutes epics and I can't help but cry in gratitude for the wonders of divine sports writing.

RIP Bob Gibson 1935-2020
Thank you for giving us the greatest season in the history of baseball.
Pedro Martinez 1999 to 2000.
That has legitimate argument for being the greatest along with Gibson.
Remember that Pedro Martinez was throwing up earned run average of 1.6 in an era where the second-best was 3.7, and The League average was five.
Gibson had an excellent season, but he didn't beat the next best pitcher in his League by two runs.
@@paysonfox88 I think there's a difference between the best season by a pitcher in a relative sense versus an objective one. Pedro had the best season compared to everyone else in the league by a greater margin than Bob Gibson. But Bob's underlying stats were still better so I'd say he had the greatest objective season by a pitcher
The fact that he almost died just a few years into his life and turned it into an incredibly fulfilling career in professional sports and an 85 year life is a beautiful distillation of his life, RIP you legend.
@@kadinallan2436 But a relative sense is the only way to judge players from different eras. In a vacuum, yes, Bob Gibson's 1968 season was the best ever, or at least the best in the live ball era (1920-present). But there's a big difference between 1968 and 1999.
It’s crazy this Bob guy was so good at so many different sports

November 9, 1935 - October 2, 2020
Bob Cousy impressed the entire crew of Blue Chips so much that he got a standing ovation, not only because of his impressive free throw shooting, but because Shaq was there the previous day and missed 14 out of 15.
Saw a comment from a production assistant who said Bob made ,between 3 takes, 21 in a row. Damn
jon could talk about grass growing for 42 minutes and i’d love every second of it
In the third week of the grass growing there was a sudden spike in its growth, one that can only be explained by the good weather and, of course, the grass’s determination
Hmmm, lemme think... Grass and sports? Let's talk about Pep Guardiola's obsession with how the grass' height affects how teams coached by him play.
"If someone is named "Bob" it is a safe bet that someone out there really loves them"
That was both exceptionally simple, and also exceptionally profound. I am only 5 minutes into a 40-minute film, but I already am enjoying thoroughly your thoughts into what seems like a joke topic at surface level.

@@rm5surf3r39 shut up
I’d argue Pedro Martinez’s 2000 was an even bigger statistical outlier. He had an ERA of 1.74 pitching in the AL East during the height of the steroid era. His ERA+ that year was 291, on a scale where 100 is average. Meaning, Pedro was almost 3 times better that season than the average pitcher. For reference, the only pitcher to ever record a higher ERA+ was Tim Keefe way back in his rookie year of 1880 when baseball was a completely different game.
Two things

Rest in Peace, Mr. Bob Gibson. One of the best Bob’s EVER.
Rest In Peace Bob Gibson. The King of Bobs
One thing that I appreciate about this video is that it's honest in how you can't really look at the history of men's sports in America, or look at America in general, without the presence of racism pervading it.
this is true, it is also important to consider that the racial issues in the USA are very unique to our great nation, and it’s effectively up to us to prove that the ethnostate is not the ideal living situation. nations like south africa have done great things. but still, do not solve american issues.
This reminds me of looking at Google maps at the continent scale then slowly zooming down to some random area and continuing to zoom until you're looking at a neighbourhood you've never seen before. There's nothing quite like this anywhere. This should be a Netflix show. Give Bois a bigger budget, a team of a dozen or so animators with a big render farm and boom, instant sports analysis classic.
Also, my name is Bob and after the intro, my name ceased to sound correct to my ears for another 10 mins, which is also mind blowing.
thanks Bob. we support you. #bringbackbob
What's funny is that he actually animates these *with* the Google Earth software, just texturing random bits of ground then using the camera automation controls to record it.
Neat! My great grandfather was known as Bob Boken (Robert Anthony) and he played in the majors for only two years but hey he did make it to the majors!
I lived in Edwardsville, Illinois (which is right by where Bob Boken was from). Your great grandfather played with Hall of Famers Joe Cronin (also his manager), Heinie Manush, Goose Goslin, Sam Rice, Luke Appling, Ted Lyons and Al Simmons. He also played with Moe Berg, who was considered the most brilliant person to ever play in the Majors and was a spy during WWII (there is a movie about him starring Paul Rudd). He (Bob Boken) hit his first home run off Schoolboy Rowe (who was an excellent pitcher, near Hall of Famer). His second Home Run was a 12th inning go-ahead, eventual game winning, home run off the very good Bump Hadley. He also hit a Home Run off General Crowder who was an all-star pitcher. His final home run in the Majors, for the White Sox, was a Grand Slam in the 8th inning which proved to be the winning margin.
On April 30, 1933 - Bob Boken hit a game winning single in the 12th inning (with 2 outs) off of Lefty Grove, who is a Hall of Famer, was the best pitcher in baseball at the time and is one of the greatest pitchers of all-time. He (Bob) had been in the majors for only 5 days at this point and he hit a walk-off single on one of the greatest pitchers of all-time.
Your great-grandfather was playing in Yankee Stadium in 1933, on July 4rth, when Babe Ruth hit a Home Run (Bob Boken had a double earlier in the game) - he got to play against Ruth in Ruth's last great season on the Nation's Independence Day. He played against Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer, Mickey Cochrane etc, etc. These players are still amongst the greatest of all-time.
So, even though it was only two years it is still pretty cool and he got to see and do many unique things.
