The search for the saddest punt in the world | Chart Party

  • To punt is to give up, and in the 21st century, NFL teams have given up nearly 50,000 times. Most of those punts were reasonable decisions. But a few were so cowardly, and in such defiance of all reason, that they must not be forgotten. In this episode of Chart Party, it’s our mission to find them.
    CORRECTIONS:
3:43 - I misread this line. The rule was changed prior to the 2016 season.
6:08 - Fig. 2 lists 46,290 punts as opposed to the 46,377 punts claimed by the original chart -- a discrepancy of 87. The higher number was found through the Pro-Football-Reference.com Play Index, which is highly accurate but not completely perfect -- for example, it classified a few plays as punts that were actually passes. I manually removed as many as I could find, especially the outliers, but there are still a few hiding in there. The lower number was found by the listed NFL season totals. Since I also found the touchdowns, field goals, et al. in this manner, I decided to leave the punts total intact so as to keep the ratio consistent.
8:39 - Specifically at the opponent’s 25-yard line, you’ll notice that there’s a significant decline in the green “go for it” total. This data was found through Pro-Football-Reference’s Game Play Finder. Since this tool only returns 500 plays at a time, I had to pull the 46,000-plus punts through a series of smaller searches. This gave me just 39 “go for it”s at the opponent’s 25; however, if I ran the search in a different sequence, it gave me a more expected total of 111. For reasons I can’t explain, this discrepancy only shows up exactly at the opponent’s 25. Rather than patching in this total, I decided to leave the chart as is so as to preserve its consistency, but the actual total is likely closer to 111 than 39. The Game Play Finder is like an F1 car: it’s very powerful, but it has to be handled very carefully.
9:45 - This was Hekker’s gross punting average. I probably should have used his net punting average instead, which is closer to 40 than 45.8.
10:50 - A bit of a miscalculation on my part. In the 21st century overtimes have occurred once every 539 games, not once every 483 games.
12:00 - We believe there’s an error in the play-by-play report. This play likely occurred near the beginning of the fourth quarter, not the end of the third.
31:01 - The third Dolphins drive is slightly misplaced; it’s a few yards off from where it should be.
36:07 - These two field goal attempts are shown in the wrong order. The Steelers’ attempt should be on the left side of the screen, and the Falcons’ on the right.
36:19 - This chart title should read, “with five or fewer seconds left in the half or game.” Plays at the end of the second quarter were included in this sample. Additionally, hail marys as defined here are even more rare than I claimed: four plays found their way into the sample that were actually turnovers that resulted in touchdowns in the other direction. Hail mary touchdowns are actually 12-for-780 in this sample, not 16-for-780.
39:08 - I misspoke. These two punts came on fourth and 11, not fourth and 13.
40:31 - I can't believe I did this. The Bills are not Buffalo's only major pro sports team. I forgot about the NHL's own Buffalo Sabres. Sincere apologies.

I wasn’t following football yet (I’m still technically not lmao, but the knowledge I’ve gained from watching Jon’s videos have made it more fun for me when my mom watches the games) but I remember what a wild and wacky year that was to be a Ravens fan (or around Ravens fans). The slow-starting season quickly became thrilling because the defense was just that OP, people were shouting “DEEEEEEE-FENSE!” at every game (I even saw a guy holding up two paper cutouts of the letter D and a picket fence, I appreciated the pun), my mom got a Ray Lewis jersey, and I distinctly remember hanging out in my mom’s friend’s basement during the Super Bowl. I played Tetris on my Gameboy Color, ate food, and wrote stories in my notebook as everyone around me yelled with joy. At the time I thought it was too loud and smoky down there, but thanks to rosy retrospection, it’s now a fond memory 😄

But that's part of 'perpetually inexplicable'. They are a team that has historically been among the better teams of the league but bafflingly incapable of finishing the deal. They have a couple of the most successful teams never to make it to a Super Bowl. 9th in all-time win percentage but haven't been to a Super Bowl in over 50 years (the only team who's even been to one with a longer drought is the Jets, and they're 27th in all-time win percentage). And while one-score games appear to be their preferred flavor recently, they've had more than their share of weird game results even before that. I've been watching them for over a quarter century at this point, I feel fairly confident that 'perpetually inexplicable' isn't just because of the last few years.

September 19th, 2021, we bore witness to the single most cowardly punt in the 21st century. Texans have the ball against the Browns, early in the 2nd quarter, with the scored tied 7-7. It's 3rd and 15 on the HOU 38, and the Texans gain 13 yards. However, Browns are caught offsides, so a decision must be made. Do you accept the penalty, making it 3rd and 10, and get another shot at a first down? Or do you decline the penalty, make it 4th and 2 at midfield, and go for it on 4th?
Texans end up declining the penalty and punt, resulting in a touchback. It was essentially a punt on 3rd down, something that actually broke the surrender index. It was a decision so gutless and cowardly that math can't describe it's scope.

The 2021 Minnesota Vikings are probably going to make the playoffs. They have a 7-7 record. Of their seven losses, six of them have occurred by blowing 4th quarter leads in the last 2 minutes, or on overtime losses. That has got to be some kind of record. @@patrick-xu1go Sure it does. Depends on what type of game you are playing. Plus you have to look at the numbers. If you punt from mid-field you have a high percentage of pining the other team within their 20 yard line. Assuming you have a good defense, you have a higher percentage of stopping them from scoring if they are pinned back vs. getting the ball at mid-field. Forcing them to put will give you a fresh set of downs. With the possibility of improved field position.
Of course I understand the always go for it on fourth down approach. You are playing a shoot out, with the goal that your team will score more points than the other team. Where I am the defense mindset. My goal is to stop you at your 4 and 2 at mid-field. Giving it to my offense at mid-field. If I don't stop the fourth down, oh well, I will stop you again.

@@connordemorest6750 I gotta say, I've long found it pretty absurd that in the multi-billion dollar, ultra-high stakes NFL in the year 2022 (and even Div I College football), they still use line judges to spot the ball. I mean, they're essentially just relying on the eyesight of old men to place the ball arbitrarily based on where they "think" they saw it when the player went down - viewing angle be damned. All just to make things "easier"?
Football is literally "The Game of Inches," so when every single play comes down to pure guesswork in terms of the exact ball spot, it kinda reduces the whole sport imo. And not just in crucial spots like 3rd and 4th downs - but literally every single play. Every single time the ball is spotted, it's guesswork. And these missed inches add up to feet, and feet add up to yards, and yards add up to first downs over the course of a game. Yet very few people seem to question this archaic way of doing things, or even think about it at all.
I mean, you can find numerous videos online of refs spotting the ball very dubiously, and even vids of other refs coming in and moving the ball from where a first ref spotted it. And it never gets questioned. It's insane when you think about it. Especially considering that the technology is definitely out there in this day and age to do something about it, like put chips/sensors in the ball and throughout the field or something...

I think the reason why the saddest punts often occurred in games where the punting team won is because the construction of the surrender index means that the saddest punts occur in very close games, and in very close games, the outcome is closer to a coin flip. Variance handles the rest, resulting in a 6-3-1 record for teams with the saddest punts purely because the game was close and anything can happen.
In short, the situations that create the saddest punts are the situations where the outcome of the game is the least predictable at the time of the punt.

Hey Jon, great video but you should definitely revisit this video to add playoff punting to the Surrender Index since clearly punting in the postseason is that much worse with every game being a win or go home, maybe a x2 for wild card, x3 for division, x4 for conference, and a god awful x8 for Super Bowl punting. For most punts which would be around the 0.5-3.0 on the Index, the playoff multiplier wouldn't do that much but for example punting on 4th and 1 inside the opponent's 40 during the Super Bowl would result in a catastrophic score.

In Week 15 of the 2022 season on December 17th, the Minnesota Vikings were playing the Indianapolis Colts and the Vikings punted on 4th and 10 at the Colts 39 yard line, during a tied game in overtime with 4:50 remaining.
According to my calculations with the formulas provided, the surrender index was 320.34 for that punt. This would be ranked between 8th and 9th from the video.
Below is my math. Let me know if there are any errors.
((2110*0.001)^3)+1=10.39 (seconds passed in the second half and overtime formula)
    19.27*0.8*2*10.39=320.34
Jon mentioned in the video that the weirdest games have the highest surrendex punts and this game was no exception. The Colts were leading 33-0 at halftime, until the Vikings tied the game late in the 4th quarter with a touchdown. The Vikings punted in overtime with 4:50 left. The Vikings defense stopped the Colts and forced them to punt (according to my calculations, this punt isn't as high because the Colts weren't as far downfield as the Vikings on the previous series). The Vikings then drive down the field and kicked a game winning field goal. Since the Vikings won, the Colts blew the biggest lead in NFL history and were eliminated from the playoffs. Another thing worth mentioning is that Matt Ryan was the quarterback for the losing team in the biggest Super Bowl choke (28-3) and is also now losing quarterback in the biggest regular season choke ever in NFL history.
The Vikings eventually won by being cowards and not kicking a field goal when they had the opportunity to do so. Football is a weird and dumb sport.

    • @justinjelinek8420
      @justinjelinek8420 Před rokem +3

Part of this decision was due to Indianapolis inability to move the ball since halftime, punting there meant a tie was the worst case scenario. They would be frerolling for a win. Also a field goal does not end the game as that was the initial drive.
But yes in terms of the surrender index this would be way up there.

28:18 I distinctly remember this punt because my dog got hit by a car during this game, and my dad and I had to drive 2 hours to get her to an emergency animal hospital, because this was at 8 at night on a Sunday. So it was one in the morning, and we had no idea about our dogs condition, or even if she was going to survive. We were watching Sportscenter, and they were talking about this punt, and they showed this punt. So me and my dad were in this lobby, waiting to hear if our dog was going to live, terrified out of our minds, and this punt was so cowardly, it took our minds off of it and we talked about it for 5 minutes. That’s how sad this punt was.
P.S. She survived. Had some mild contusions, and slipped a disc in her back. She recovered, and while she don’t get around like she used to, she still here and that’s all that matters.
Edit: I should also mention that this happened like three weeks before my birthday, so my present was getting my pup back.
