For more than a century, many of our greatest sports heroes were named Bob. It seemed as though that would never change. Why would it? Why did it? Where did they go?
Corrections:
2:00 - Although these jump distances are correct, a couple of them are in slightly incorrect positions on the ruler. I’d made some adjustments to the ruler after laying some of the markers, and just forgot to adjust those accordingly.
45:00 - The graph is correct, and I am a liar. Bob Wheatley’s career actually stretched between 2014 and 2017, as you can see in the green area that stretches to 2017.

On July 10th 2022, Bob Jungels won his first career stage on the Tour de France. He's now 29 and recovered from necessary surgery due to endofibrosis, a narrowing of the arteries, which almost ended his career. Bobs are still doing Bob things.

As someone who grew up with metric, 9 metres might just be impossible without wind assistance. I understand it's never been done, to this day. Bob's jump taking the record all the way to 8.9 made my jaw hit the floor.
You can tell according to its placement in the highlight story of the whole piece that it’s Jon’s as well.
I am, by no means, a sports guy. But I won't lie, watching those measures scroll past the world record, past Bob's original 28' goal, and to continue scroll further and beyond; I shed real tears in utter awe of that insane accomplishment.
They did a bang up job of building the tension by showing the scrolling measurement instead of telling us. Great work.

As of 2023 I think of the ten only Bob Bryan has officially retired. Other people in the comments have pointed out a couple Jon may have missed so I think we are still above 10

Imagine being Bob Beamon when the distance was announced. Realizing that at that moment, you are the greatest at something. Ever. Not only are you are the greatest, but unquestionably so. No human in all of history even comes close to your accomplishment in your field. I understand why he collapsed with overwhelming emotion. Jon, you captured the power of that moment so well in this video. The footage of him covering his face after being told the distance brings tears to my eyes.

@@theunwelcome As a sportswriter who tries very hard not to do this, it's quite difficult to hype up a team that is playing terribly.
My go-to move in that case is hoping that they played ever worse the season before (or even just earlier in the season) and point to some kind of improvement. If they are playing even worse than before, God help them, because the best I can do for them then is give stats, sit back and shut my mouth.

Everyone has their favorite line, and they're all correct. THIS line gets me every single time.
This quote hurts. Injuries are one of, if not the most difficult part of any sport. As a hockey fan, I am no stranger to injuries taking out players, but unlike with sanders, usually they are able to finish their careers. It pains me to hear that Sanders career was cut short. He could have revolutionized even more so the defensive part of football had he been able to finish. Hats of for him even being able to make it as a smaller player in a role dominated by bigger players. Now, at least he will be immortalized for what he did.

It's such a profoundly sad line. I was aware of Bob Sanders, but I didn't know all the twists and turns of his all-too-brief story. He was robbed of an all-time career, and we were robbed of seeing it.

The part where Jon gets to Bob Sanders always breaks my heart. He was a phenomenal talent who could easily have been one of the greatest safeties of all time but was unfortunately derailed by injury time and time again and the music he uses when detailing how his career went, describing every highlight, every injury, and every missed game before hitting us with the fact that he was the last Bob to play a game in any of the major American sports never fails to bring about a profound sadness within me.

@@kyleneu4064 I agree 100% but I feel like there is still a small feeling that exists, regardless, where you wish this person or this team or whatever who you know and love and wish would receive the same love and adoration from the larger world. It's kind of like Jon Bois' Mariners documentary. He states outright that if we measure the success of the Mariners in world series rings and in wins/losses, we're missing the point. Like you said, I doubt Bob Sanders would change a thing about how his career went. He played like an animal and was invaluable to his team. But like how there is still a shred of me that wishes the Mariners won a world series, I also wish Bob Sanders was a Hall of Famer. I had no idea who he was before watching this documentary series. I'm glad I know who he is now.

This series was unquestionably SNUBBED for the academy award for documentary, no piece of visual media can compare to this serotonin machine.
The Bob Beamon story had me actually crying by the end of it. I cannot begin to imagine the strife, loneliness, and inner conflict he must of felt as he competed and trained for that record. Nor can I imagine what it must of been like to shatter such a record as he did.
Stories like this are why I adore sports writing. I cant say I would of really cared about this record at all or it’s Progression if I just saw it in a table. It would be a “wow this guy broke it by ALOT” but that’s about all I would get from a chart. This bring the human side to sports to the forefront. Thanks for making this Jon

Between the punt video being his first video after that long-ass hiatus and now devoting 90+ minutes to the name Bob, I'm almost convinced that Jon either delights in the challenge of taking inane subject matter and transforming it into something genuinely interesting or he's just trolling us and manages to do so in a manner that's compelling nonetheless.

Fun fact, my grandpa was a long jumper too and he competed in the Rome 60 Olympics, both with Ralph Boston and Igor Ter-Ovanesian. He arrived 10th. Another bonus fact, one of Igor Ter-Ovanesian shoes broke down so my grandpa gave him his shoes, in which Igor jumped for the win

I am still absolutely floored by how a simple scroll over about 17 inches of tape measure that takes only 41 seconds can be the most jaw-dropping experience I have ever had.
I had to watch Part II to see if he included Bob Burnquist, and I'm glad to see that he did.
It's hard to fully appreciate his famous run in the 2001 vert final without more context.
For one thing, in those days skaters would usually have setup tricks between their real difficult ones, and Bob only had basically one at the start, followed by back to back to back bangers off of every wall. He also had multiple points where it looked like he had messed up. He got a bad flick or catch and it looked like he was going to bail, but he miraculously had enough control to hang on and keep going. Then on top of that, and this is the real kicker, he did most of the run switch, which means he was in what was opposite his normal stance, basically doing every trick backwards. Imagine performing in any other sport in your opposite stance, batting, pitching, golfing, whatever. That's what he managed to do here. And after the time was up, he just kept on flowing, executing trick after trick, leaving no doubt in anyone's minds that he deserved the gold that year.
I live in Toledo and I 100% support Bob Hamelin's decision of retiring because he was done living in Toledo, lmao.

Why do you do this Jon? Your stats and data visualization skills are incredible, you could be working in any team's office making bank with your kind of insight.
Instead you do this. Nobody needed to do this. It's only the most recent in a long line of things you created that the world never needed. But that, in itself, is what we need. There's a clear philosophy in your work of highlighting the stories of little people, and showing how every life adds to the tapestry of the human existence. The Game of Bobs
An update on the final 10 Bobs, 5 years later:
1. Bob Ajisafe is 38 and has not fought since 2019, but does not seem to have officially retired. 2 years ago he was said to be contemplating a change in weight class.
2. Bob McHugh is 32, playing in the sixth tier of Scottish football.
3. Bob Straetman is only 26 but plays in the fourth tier of Belgian football.
4. Bob Gilder is 73 and has not golfed professionally this decade.
5. Bob Sowards is 55 and placed 28th in a PGA Qualifying Tournament in December 2023, falling short of the top 5 qualifying positions.
6. Bob Tway is 65 and has not golfed since 2019. He was noncommittal in an interview that year about whether he was planning to continue golfing professionally or retire.
7. Bob Estes is 58 and still going strong, he placed 9th in a tournament in the PGA Champions circuit just last week.
8. Bob Bryan retired in 2020.
9. Bob Evans is 52 and an active promoter for an independent wrestling circuit, he last entered the ring in 2022 but may do so again.
10. Bob Jungels is only 31 and still cycling in the UCI World Tour, the highest level of competition in the sport.
In all, I would argue that while 6 could be considered active: McHugh, Straetman, Sowards, Estes, Evans, and Jungels, only Estes and Jungels are playing at a high level rather than languishing in obscure competitions. But that doesn't matter, I hope they all continue their careers and carry the torch for as long as they can.
The final ten should be uped to a final 11, some guy on the Tampa Bay Rays is named Bob Seymour! Bob's coming back!
There's a professional wrestler working the indie circuit called Bob Anger (great wrestling name) now as well.

The incredible thing is, as much as he hyped Beamon's jump (and the reveal and music are just perfect), it's still possibly undersold. Breaking a world record by that relative amount in a pure measure of athleticism is both unprecedented and unmatched. There is probably no other single effort in sports that approaches what Beamon did. And adding his personal and social circumstances, it's hard to imagine a feat of that level (and importance) ever happening again.

If you adjust for the running surface of Jesse Owens compared to modern day rubberized track, Owens would have been only a single stride behind Usain Bolt at his fastest. They are both extremely fast. Bolt is UNDENIABLY the fastest man in history. But he is not as far advanced as Beamon was amongst his competition. Bob Beamon in a single jump represents a titanic leap (sic) in athleticism. It’s like if Muhammad Ali went back in time 100 years to fight amateur middleweight boxers in a bar league. It’s like 1968 Bob Gibson pitching to middle schoolers. It’s like the Miracle on Ice except everyone on America’s team is Wayne Gretzky. Beamon didn’t just change the long jump, but our understanding of the capabilities of our species. No one in thousands of years could even have dreamed of traveling that distance under their own power horizontally. It beggars belief

These videos may have accidentally saved my academic career. I am about to graduate with my AoS with an emphasis on mathematics, planning on transferring to university as a statistics major. Lately I have become very disillusioned with math, I have dropped all my classes this term being severely burned out and coming to see math as nothing more than "meaningless number manipulation, that benefits no one and lacks any intrinsic value". Not only have you used statistics as a basis for a compelling story, but also, in a round-about way as a way to tell the entire history of sports, and the stories of stand-out people along the way, and while I am possibly the person least interested in sports that I know, I cannot deny how engrossing the story is that these videos have to tell. You've given me hope that maybe there is something more yet to be done.

I can't think of an adjective to describe how good you are at researching. I've done research deep dives for trends to help me gain an advantage in fantasy football. I've researched topics from getting shat on by a bird to which serial killers went unnoticed for the longest. I am a nerd, and i piggyback off of data collected from other nerds. But "what if we took away Barry Bonds' bat" and "what's the saddest punt ever" are truly groundbreaking adventures into analytical nerdom.
"Scorigami" is now not only something i casually think about, but it's something I need to be updated on. What is the scorigami chart for college football? More teams=more games played=less scorigami opportunity.

I got choked up at the Beamon jump reveal. In a video dedicated to the history of the name Bob in sports. Such is the power of Jon Bois.
Have a great uncle named bob proctor who played minor league baseball for the cardinals in the 50s. Had a change to go to spring training but quit because he had some business thing to come do in California. Ended up making a lot of money and lives comfortablely out here. Just funny to know he was part of these statistics

This is one of the most incredible feats ever in sports history. I'm shocked that there wasn't (IIRC) any big commemoration of its 50th anniversary last year. Jon Bois has done a great service to the public good.

This is a beautiful quote. I work as an historic interpreter, dressing in period clothing, talking about history and performing period skills. I largely prefer not to talk about the famous people, but the stories of the average person. So that sentiment resonates with me deeply. Thank you, Jon.

Even though it's totally irrelevant, it adds to the entertainment of the Bob story, so he felt the need to add it to the video. He just has a unique form of humor that sometimes sounds confusing to people.

@@ryani.8916 the story is certainly not "totally irrelevant", but rather quite relevant to the tale of interesting sports Bobs. But like most stories, it's far less important than the tale of a man performing an extremely common athletic feat far better than any other human ever.

An inch is just a bit more than the width of your thumb (2.54 cm), a foot is 12 inches(30.48cm), a foot is pretty close to the long side of a piece of paper as well if you want an easy reference.

I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't mention Bullet Bob Hayes, a man who ran 10.06 seconds at the 1964 games on a cinder track in poor condition. If you think about, you might realize how extraordinary this achievement is. He was also the first to officially go below 10 seconds, though the time was wind-aided. He then went on to star as a wide receiver in the NFL and make the Hall of Fame.
I keep coming back for the “in the same month, in the same year, someone with the same name would achieve something even more astonishing” as a payoff to the first 2 minutes of Bob Gibson’s story makes me choke up every time
Signing Jon Bois was the best decision made by SB Nation. I’m not sure, but I think it’s because (unlike a lot of youtubers) he actually cares and does thorough research. And that doesn’t even mention the brilliant voiceover and editing. Idk, it just does feel like he genuinely cares about what he’s talking about.

After the Colts won the Super Bowl in 2007, Me and my dad went to downtown Indy for the Parade Celebration. A float with all the Colts players went by and my dad left me (10 Years old at the time) in a crowd of people to go shake Bob Sanders Hand.
That was so special for Indiana. I didn't realize how important it was till after. I think I still have a poster I got with all the players on that. They got us our ring. Hope the pacers can achieve the same in basketball!

Inspirational but I personally don't consider racing a sport so much as a pastime. Maybe Jon is in the same boat, more likely he just couldn't include every single notable sports Bob and so focused on more popular sports.
