I think Ashley owes David Dein an apology after what he what has recently come out in David's Biography. "We came out of the boardroom feeling like we had hit our heads on a brick wall. We had lost Ashley Cole over £5k a week". So Dein actually fought to give him that contract, he got him a better payrise in the end anyway and Cole then released that book for little or no reason other than to force through a move to Chelsea. Dein has confirmed what I knew all along. He wanted to give Ashley that contract but Peter Hill-Wood (who reminded me of Eric Openshaw from Striker if anyone remembers that comic strip) like the cigar munching buffoon he was, vetoed it along with the rest of the sellout board. Yet Dein was the only one Cole attacked in his book. As I say, he owes Dein a huge apology for the lies he published.
I blame David Deon and Cole's agent for making the initial situation happen and the way it was handled afterwards. Cole had no issue with Wenger or most of the coaching staff. If it was left to Cole and Wenger to resolve then I don't think it would have ended up going like it did. I used to loathe Cole for what happened but he was young and had his mind poisoned by his agent and Dein and the rest of the board's handling of it didn't help either.
I would feel disrespected if I were in his shoes we should of given him the 60k he deserved. He was arsenal through and through. He should of became captain and retired at Arsenal. Stupid move from our board at the time. Especially when he was on 70k, he accepted a 10k paycut because he didn’t play for most of the 05/06 season. He was one of our own. He should of never moved to Chelsea.
At the time it seemed like he was greedy, but now when you see how many other players they sold and how they didn't (and haven't since) compete at the top level for major trophies in the last 10 years. He was right.
