      IonaJonas I've noticed that with Colbert. I like his monologues, but for some reason he doesn't conduct the best interviews. People like Conan and Kimmel, however, really bring out the best in guests because of their brilliant interactional style.

      I've noticed that too. At first I was gonna say it has something to do with CBS and corporate policies but then I remembered that Letterman was a great interviewer who often didn't try to stay on "safe" topics.

      I love Stephen, but he definitely doesn't always have that twinge of *fuck-it* attitude that Conan has. You have to let it ALL go Stephen including the religion which is keeping you from seeing 100 percent through the bullshit. Unfortunately that's a part of who he is. Bill truly is able to see the bullshit with literally ANYONE out there which is what makes him one of the greatest stand up comedians of all time.

    • @DekkarJr
      @DekkarJr Před 7 lety +73

      Couldn't have said it better myself. I loved Colbert as his character on his old show, but as himself on an actual talk show he is not a good interviewer. At least Fallon and Kimmel can laugh through it and give Burr room to do his rant style comedy, but Colbert just plods through this interview so passive aggressively it makes it really obvious that he didn't want to give Bill the time of day in the first place and the network probably forced him to do it because of his shows success and the fact that his easily in the top 3 funniest and currently successful touring comedians right now.
      Stephen comes off as sort of elitist in his way of trying way too hard with this show to be Letterman's successor (who also came off like an asshole when he sometimes interviewed people, but only did it when they deserved it and were making fools of themselves) + hes trying to be ahead of the pack on supporting the liberal SJW agenda that if he doesn't act this way towards a savage like Burr, who obviously has conflicting politics, then he'd get heat behind the scenes from his liberal bosses. He's stuck up is the bottom line.

      Rogan tries to make most of his podcast at least 2-3 hours because most people, at least first time guests, don't really open up all the way and get fully comfortable in an that sort of environment til around the 2nd hour and beyond. His show isn't really an interview style either, he sits and listens without interrupting or changing serious topics until the conversation is fully fleshed out. You can't really get past the facade that most people put up and get at the "meat" of who a person really is and what they really want to communicate til you get a few hours into getting to know them. It's almost a befriending process really.

    I love Stephen Colbert. I love Bill Burr. But this was one of the worst interviews I have ever seen with Bill Burr. And it wasn't even Bill Burr's fault. The crowd and Colbert seemed uneasy. Colbert seemed unprepared. I'll give Colbert the benefit of the doubt but Bill Burr deserved better treatment. I wonder if there is a story as to why this interview went down the way it did.

    • @ashton1860
      @ashton1860 Před 7 lety +66

      Agreed. They're both great, but this interview left me wondering if there's some personal tension between them. I know Colbert can be a good host but he was anything but. I know Burr can be hilarious if he gets rolling but there was no momentum here.
      Bill usually shines in front of a less-than-receptive crowd, but he couldn't get going- as soon as he started getting big laughs from a rant, Colbert stops him with that curt-as-fuck 'we should probably show the clip, now.'

      Jessie Martinez Colbert, as much as I like him, is a fuckn square. His comedy is more sweet, hipster intellectual and Bill's is angry, masculine Bostonian. Conan is a better foil for him because he's a mix of both and can play a better straight man. I don't even know why Colbert has a talk show tbh. He was only ever good at being an angry, masculine character, ironically.

    • @vyse102

      Julie, interesting perspective. Maybe this is just how he is with successful comics. I'm a bit curious to see him & Gervais now, but this clip doesn't exactly make me excited to watch more Colbert. Bill even had to point out that the audience was so offended by his humor that he would be "washed up in 6 months" when he pointed out how sensitive people were when he told his lesbian joke. As the great Mel Brooks recently said, political correctness will be the death of comedy. This is a good example.

      "So nothing out there makes you mad?" - Could there be a better setup for a comedian like Bill Burr to go into something? He just didn't really have energy. "I dunno, taking your socks off on airplanes?"
