Interestingly, Jason Flemyng who personifies Pope in this scene does not know how to play violin but with a little help from cinematographic technology and excellent acting, he made the scene look quite believable.
As a violinist, I’m amazed how well he faked that. The woman sighing at the end was a nice touch. I remember reading a 19th c. concert review of a performance by Liszt, in which was commented something that could never be said today, “After the patrons had left, it was plain to see where the women had been sitting.” Hard to believe, but in 1844, women were throwing their underwear on stage at Liszt’s performances!
The sheer sexual energy and frenetic phrasing cause women in the audience to react. This is so fantastic! Too short, but then, I keep replaying! Bravo!
Joshua Bell did the violins on this, he's been known to cover songs. His cover of Elenor Rigby on his "At Home With Friends" album was absolutely lovely.
Classic, non-CG filmmaking to mix long shots of the two real violinists and close-ups using what the director called "The Octopus Method" where *three people* were in play: actor Jason Flemyng his chin on the instrument while one violinist did the fingerings and another bowed. They tied their arms so Flemyng would know how to react.
Nope, studied this film in college for my filmography class because I played violin in highschool. Joshua bell did the bowing and the fingering, same with Kasper Weiss. Literally Flemyng just stood there and did certain things while Joshua Bell did all the playing.

The close up shots where you can’t see his entire arm are actually Joshua Bell’s hand playing the left hand. That’s why it looks a little odd.
Despite the fact that he is not playing this piece he acted very well. Excellent!
