      @@tenman7242 we’ve never had one either, so we are learning as we go. Hindsight is always 20/20 (or at least it can be) but I wouldn’t have known it needed oil restrictors until after it gave us problems, but I’m not a professional engine builder either.
      Small Blocks are more my thing. I’m familiar with them.

      @@theoldmansgarage That's what I love about this channel, your channel, and the Gen 2 video's. We get to learn along with you guys. Not someone saying this "IS THE WAY," it's more, "this is how I would do it" just like I learned from my dad and grandpa. I grew up on SBC so this is an awesome thing to watch. i doubt any of us could have afforded an aluminum block way back in the 80's even if we found one. Thanks for posting. This is the best thing on anywhere.

    VERY interested in this diagnostic teardown with Uncle Bob we will definitely be tuning in. Really sorry things came apart on you all just as this chapter of the SRC story was getting great but... it could have been far far worse. If that block and the heads are saveable you'll be back in the drivers seat of that rocket ship soon enough! Fingers crossed!

      looks like a $99 mig from harbor freight was used to put Mallory in SMH no penetration thank god nobody was hurt

      @@ericaichinger4768 No, Even the $99.00 Harbor Frieght Mig welders work. "IF YOU KNOW HOW TO WELD" to begin with. Buying a $20-K Miller doesn't make you a welder. And from the looks of the off center hole drilled in this crank. You can add basic machining 101 to the list of "Needs Improvement" next to " Can't weld" also. I'm NOT a engine builder. Have I torn down and rebuilt a few OEM AG (Gas and Diesel) engines?? Yes I have. I'm not familiar with how these cranks are sold. Are the balanced at all from the manufacturer?? Or are the journal just polished to oem spec and then the builder is responsible to have it balanced to coincide with the other parts (Rods,Pistons, ect) they use in the build. Either way, who ever balanced this crank "shit the bed" on this one. If this is there best work, Then I think they better take a step back and re-evaluate things. Its very obvious that this engine had SERIOUS oiling/Lubercation issues. Perhaps the builder hasn't done very many of these twin turbo engines that make the MASSIVE amount of crank case pressure that twin turbos do. But if you go and look at a few turbo Big Blocks on pulling trucks and tractors. They all have the drain hoses that exit the back of the heads and return back to the oil pan. Something that was obviously missing here.
      The rest of the who wanted what rods and all that is irrelevant at this point. The lack of oil in key places was going to destroy this engine very soon. The Mallory getting tossed out of the crank was a GIFT at this point. To bad it caused the crash and the subsequent body work. But some lessons are just more expensive to learn than others. I have NO worries about this engine going forward. With the watchful eye of Mr Bob McVay, when this goes back together it will be RIGHT.

      @@FarmsVilla I agree, even though technology is great there is an essence missing. It may be hard for others to understand but I'm glad I grew up with corded land lines. Kids now hardly go outside, my youngest has eye problems from to much screen time. There's good and bad with everything.

      This will be a expensive lesson, But the ones that matter are rarely cheap. When you guys are done with putting this Aluminum BBC back together, you'll know what's what in it. And know where EXACTLY where to look if something shows up in data that isn't 100% to your liking. I wondered where the external drains that allow the oil to go back to the pan where in this engine from the start. As Bill said, "I'm no engine builder", But I've seen enough of these (And others) to ask questions when something looks like it missing. This poor engine just need to flow (oil) better, And will when you guys are done with it.

    If you drill the counterweight from either end of the crankshaft, the idea is to have a slight press fit on the heavy metal. Then you TIG the heavy metal in and it is not going to come out. To keep the TIG weld below the surface of the counterweight, you cut the heavy metal in a lathe so it sits below the surface of the counterweight and of course you chamfer the ends to give the weld something to fill, instead of leaving it flat. It helps to have a large drill press, or better yet a Bridgeport style mill and a purpose built fixture to hold the crank vertically to drill it. The fixture can be made easily out of a piece of one inch aluminum plate and drilled to bolt down to the mill table. It is basic machining and welding.

      They just used the drill attached to the balance machine to drill. Never even took the crank off the machine, I'd bet $ on it. I had a dirt track motor come thru one time that they hillbilly balanced like that but they went deep and welded around the top edge and on the rear they added weight by welding some plate to the crank flange. Amazing what some guys get away with. I'll stick with putting the Mallory inline with the crank. That thing was about to be a Mallory metal machine gun!

      I’m not a professional engine builder whatsoever. My main interest in this is my sons safety. I don’t think the Box family had anything but the best intentions. But clearly this combination was a bit outside their wheelhouse. I wish them the best in their future endeavors and thank them for offering to help fix the engine. We just don’t feel comfortable going that route.

    A few things you should have checked Bill, side clearance on each pair or rods with a feeler gauge and check end play of the thrust bearing with a dial indicator. Both these things determine oil pressure. Also disassemble the oil pump and make sure there were no big scares in the bottom plate or gear faces and check clearance on the gears to the plate. There are all kinds of useful tricks in blueprinting and deburring the inside of an oil pump for high rpm running.

    Billy you are very lucky the block was not damaged. A spun main bearing or "another" piece of mallory coming out could have been seriously catastrophic. This is how we get better and go faster.

    Yep pops is right... Steve Morris said that exact same sentence about the expanding and contracting of aluminum blocks when he flew down to Florida to put a tighter bearings in for better clearance on Garretts engine.. you don't have to be an expert engine builder in order to know how they work and to know what doesn't work

    Man, that is crazy that they hid the mallory installed like that! You are right, once they ground all the weld off it was just a matter of time before a piece got flung out!

      Yep. Man If they were gonna install it like that, they could have counter sunk the hole, and beveled the edge of the Mallory too and they would have had a groove that allowed them to get penetration passed just the surface.
      Inexperienced welding , and possibly just not giving a shyt

    It impressed me that your dad, a old school hot rodder, and land guy, knew enough about welding processes to know exactly what happened.
    He was absolutely right.. Mallory has tungsten in it.. the crank is probably cast or tool steel.
    Those are dissimilar metals. So when he mig welded it , it was full of porosity.. so he ground it flat to hide it.. and because he didn't counter sink the hole, and bevel the edge around the circumference of the Mallory, and create a groove to weld in and allow for penetration passed just the surface of the parts, when he ground it , he ground ALL the weld off.
    The old man may be a jack of all trades , but he knows detailed processes of alot of things. And that showed it. That's stuff only experienced fabricators and welders would recognize at a glance.

    Hey fellas, glad to see the motor not hurt too bad. Couple things:
    Aluminum rods best for your app. There not that expensive and work well for the high boost stuff. Running some on my bbc now.
    When you enlarge the valley oil holes, look into some mesh screen and epoxy them into place so if any thing breaks up top it won’t fall into the bottom.

    Those blocks where really designed for dry sump and pulling oil out of the valve train and valley with the dry sump with a wet sump you have to modify the returns for oil

      it wasnt box performances fault for the engine failure the engine failed because the mallory came out. the people that put mallory misplaced it in one of box performance videos it states they had it done locally because src needed it done quicker. people jump on the hate wagon so quick lmao

    Also with belt it is smoother timing curve with trigger because of less slack and less harmonics. Belt acts as a damper to an extent! So more power any time you can remove harmonics!

    I'd strongly consider a dry-sump system on that block. Oil return otherwise is always going to be a problem. Loose ring gaps (excessive blow-by) with boost will always exacerbate the problem.
    Dry dump will not only fix the oiling issue but will effectively give you a vacuum pump to help with the ring seal as well. $$$$$ well spent!!!!
    And another plus is with a dry-sump there's no need to restrict the oil anywhere so the lifters and valvesprings will live longer.

    On cleetus elco Steve also put oil restrictors in the turbo feed lines the same time he over sized the bearings. Guess something else to think about... great video guys👍

    Man I can’t believe how many times they have had to rebuild due to lack of oil, especially this season already. It must be such a kick in the nuts especially knowing the potential of the Nova. I’d definitely get one of those huge oil pumps, big oil tank and dry sump it and never look back. This amount of power and being used for drag racing 90% are dry sump engines. This would free up even more power and solve the lack of oil issues for life

    I can relate all too much to this video. One year I got really sick in the midst of a engine upgrade and overhaul of a Mighty Mouse 400 4 bolt main steel crank cast iron engine bored 30 over with Pop up Piston and mild race cam valve train by Crane Cams anyway, during my long illness my closet friends decided to finish up the block build but somehow forgot about the rear cam seals, needless to say we toasted that motor while it starved for oil with out those cam seals installed we spun out the mains toasted the balanced crank and managed to crack that block to junk. However, the old camel back Heads survived along with the cam and valve train setup. As of today I am still running all that in my original 2 bolt mains 1967 canister filtered 350. Very expensive lesson for us all. Now days, I really need to pull the heads from the old engine to upgrade the valves to handle today's pump gas over yesterdays Lead gas. The car is a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro 350 RS/SS Turbo 2 speed power glide transmission 12 bolt positive transaction rear end gears basically all original car paint , brakes. interior and all. Take it out now and then keep it registered and insured for the such occasions.

    I say don't just replace 2 rods, replace them all have it balanced to the crank and studs with all new stuff including the pistons as BILL said the skirts look warn in my opionion too.
    Our nostalgia Rail had a California 540 merlin with a 871 littlefield blower and a German Town Wi. powerglide doing 1200 + on alcohol at 30% boost in the 7:80 range for the quarter mile.

      Agreed IF they can get the new rods they need in a reasonable amount of time. Have to remember their cars are not just their hobby. They are used for their business/livelihood via CZcams. Good news is they still have the truck and the Falcon to race with and make content.

    A dry sump oiling system will eliminate the oiling problems and a vacuum pump will eliminate the crankcase pressure problems.

    Ok, so here I am, the FORD guy !! Bill, you just admitted, without saying it, that Ford had the " Better Idea" when they put the distributor in the front of the engine. Not only MUCH more user-friendly for the home mechanic with the grocery-getter, but way more performance oriented for all of us !! And yes, our oil sump pickups are in the back, so no oil starvation on those hard, GM BEATING launches !!! You know I have the greatest ammount of respect for you guys from my previous comments, so I'll be on the edge of my seat over here in N.H. waiting for your rebuttal !!!!!

    I know exactly how you feel. My oil pump drive shaft snapped at the end and I didn’t realize it. Made one last pass, loaded the car up, and unloaded it at home, all with no oil pressure. Good luck and God Speed!

Other than the extra plumbing, cost and limited space in the engine bay for a tank, is there any specific reason why you won't go the dry sump route or is that still up in the air?     It really sucks the way Box build that engine with very little oil return and especially the way they f..cked up balancing the crank. I don`t understand how they are able to stay in business.       That's the kind of unforced error that kills a business outright. And so it should. IDK if it was lack of knowledge or just being cheap and skimping or what their reasoning was to balance the crank like that but no matter. They should have outsourced it or at least ordered a crank from someone who did know wth they were doing.
      The reputation they could have gained by building engines for a high profile individual like Billy was a golden ticket for them... and they used it for toilet paper.

    That slug of Mallory on the OD of the counterweight is what went wrong.
    I wouldn’t be taking it back to wherever you had the work done for sure. That’s extremely dangerous.

      No doubt. The original engine builder was a hack and then wouldn’t stand behind his work. Lack of quality and lack of character. Bad for him as SRC has a ton of followers and everyone in SRC’s area now knows to avoid them.

      I won't say the name but if you go back and watch videos the nova had a banner in the window they put out a statement on Facebook basically saying mistakes happen just like they assumed it kicked a rod out personally that felt like a good assumption and blames them for taking the oil pan off without them being there personally I would hold the engine builder responsible for it because at the end of the day it wasn't parts failure which happens on any engine especially high power raceing engine but workmanship issue and they put the crank in it so that says to me they inspected it and was comfortable with it because most places have 1 or 2 "dry" fit assembles before final assemble

      @@jasonstormoen yeah depends on the situation if they are under contract because of the sponsorship of the engine or not where they have to keep the banner for so long ect but if not it would be gone as soon as they lied about who balanced the crank I get it shit happens but that's a big ass mistake that could have been deadly what if it would have happened on the big end and it was a close race not only going Into the guard rail head on at 150 plus then probably getting t boned at 150 also I bet that it is something checked every new engine they build now but missed the first time is a big no for me and I will admit it probably wouldn't have hit the wall with a diaper or belly pan on which to me isn't smart at all like I would have a diaper and a fire system on board and not a portable 1 get 1 that does the engine to try and save the car and in cab to save you

    I have seen cranks with the mallory installed the same as yours and never had an issue. Is it the correct way is debatable due to where the weight needs to be. I agree that who ever welded it should not attempt to weld anything ever again. You can tell that the oil pump sucked the pan dry and it definitely had a problem getting the oil from the top end back to the pan. You guys know what needs to be done to fix the oiling issues.

      That's honestly the only way I've ever seen them put in a crank. As a lifelong welder, the difference is exactly what bill pointed out. They look to be mig welded in and then they ground the weld off. Any Mallory I've ever seen inserted was tig welded and the weld was only touched if it was necessary for balancing.

      @@jeremywitteveen880 I have 40 years of experience building race engines and mallory is installed where the balance program tells you to install it. We always weld it and x-ray the welds. Luckily we had a facility close by that performed the welding and x-ray tasks. One it was all welded up we rechecked the balance and made final adjustments.

    They might have drain fittings from heads to pan also.

    DRY SUMP SYSTEM -- a couple of stages pulling from the heads, a stage pulling from the lifter galley -- eliminates having to drive the oil pump from the cam -- win win win.... Only way to go.... I know you hate spending the money on this kind of things, but you're spinning a BBC almost to 8k.... It cost money now save you money later....
    And as Morris said in his last video, If you can't afford to fix it when it breaks, then you shouldn't be running it.

    Been building those engines and blocks for many many yrs I open up the valley returns and drill the dividers so oil doesn’t stay in the valley area. I use restrictors in them. The best oil pan I have found is the Moroso eliminator pan or the Steve Schmidt oil pan. Data logging oil pressure on 100s of bbc and never see oil pressure issues.

    Usually you drill a hole through a allen head plug screw it inside the block then cap it with another plug. Usually the rear cam oiler restrictors are larger then in the front. Run a vacuum pump on that engine . Some of those rod bearings scratches are dirt. The Main bearings are toast. What did the thrust side of the mains look like. The crankshaft looks like it was used in another build. Billy you need .055 minimum stretch clearance for aluminum rods. Reuse the pistons send them out for coating. You can run the pistons zero Deck or .005 out of the deck but run a gasket thickness to allow for the growth. Have that block checked for crankshaft and cam bore alignment

    Good video, you may want to ask uncle Bob about opening up those oil return holes, I know we used to machine them open so the were oval not bigger just longer we would go out the same as the diameter so if they are 1/2" holes we would make them 1/2" x 1.1/2" long. Something to look at also external drains back to sump are a good thing.

    I know this a BBC and I don't know if this is applicable but when I converted my 428cj from a hydraulic flat tappet camshaft to a solid lifter camshaft I put restrictors in the heads and the block and with a high pressure/high volume oil pump and ten quart oil pan I had 100 psi cold and 70 when hot with 20-50w oil. Without those restrictors the damage to bearings would be exactly what you guys are experiencing. It's going to be better than ever when you guys put it back together. Most of all you will know exactly what you got and what clearances are. Go fast and be safe. God bless you and your family and friends.
