Building a Big Power Whipple Supercharged Big Block for a Really Cool Application

- Speedboats can place tremendous stress on their engines because they will make full-power blasts for sometimes an hour or more. We build a Whipple supercharged big block Chevy (actually two of 'em) to make nearly 2,000 horsepower worth of thrust for a ridiculous speedboat. 3/4 mile at at average speed of 90mph still takes 30 seconds. But WOW! I would like to put those engines in my 41' Commander. That yacht would probably do 50mph and instill terror in those little wakeboats.
Whipple twin-screw are so sick. While I am a turbo guy at heart I absolutely love screw blowers as well.
The technology and efficiency of screw blowers and turbos is undeniable but I’m going with an old school roots blower because none of the others have that’s same sound, feel or look. I’m just old school I guess.
For anyone not familiar (I wasn't, and had to look it up), that butterfly valve built into the upper intake manifold-as seen at 16:34-is a bypass valve to let pressure out of the manifold when no boost is needed (like at idle or on deceleration), which helps fuel economy by reducing the amount of air/fuel mixture going into the engine. Or at least that's my understanding!
Those valve covers are awesome. They would be cool on a car

You got it! It's all about horsepower for cars; torque for boats. I got taken for $12,5000.00 for a "marine engine" from a hot rod shop. "Oh yeahhhhh, I do marine". Sure you do,,,,,,,😡!!! Engine sounded like a bucket of nuts & bolts; less than 1 week after it was installed. So, I packed up my Cigarette & sent it to Hawk Marine on Thunder Alley in Miami. I got a Merlin motor built; Merlin block, heads etc. It was a 557 ci; 640 hp. For insurance purposes, the boat was rated for no more than 600 hp. I knew I would lose 40 hp through the TRS drive; that's why I asked Hawk to hit 640 hp on the dyno. Hawk did a dynamite job, couldn't of been happier!!! Money? Right around the same from the hot rod shop. Top end for the Cigarette, when done; 73 mph.

@@TheHorsepowerMonster I didn't really know the difference ( hot rod v marine) at the time. It was a 1986 Cigarette 24' Firefox; sold it in 2002 I believe. Next boat? Cigarette 38' Top Gun, pre 2000; not a fan of step hulls. I like a clean 24° deep v hull. Thanks for listening, great video. You obviously know what you're doing! RESPECT 😎.!!!

One head bolt on each bank or per head. It was a CBB cast iron (pre modular) I believe Merlin cast theirs to be compatible with the Chevy Big Block accessories and components with minimal or no modifications in which case they usually run 17 Head Bolts/Studs) per bank or head.

I was wondering about the fuel injectors if they pulse at the same time or are they actually staggered as if they were located in the actual ports of an intake manifold and how well is the fuel distribution to each cylinder? Your builders are masters of their craft . Keep up the great work and some more great videos .

With all that wonderful milling capabilities, I wonder why they don’t take the extra time to recess each block to head coolant passage (orifices) that pass through the deck, to accept a pressed in dowel with the head recessed to accept the protruding portion of the hollow dowel, and an o ring slid onto each dowel. It’s my personal hypothesis for use in boosted high output extreme conditions with a pro fogger set up, to solve the issue of cylinder head migration, you’ll have some degree of lift, in diesel and methanol applications, more in Nitromethane Alcohol fuels, and sleepy hollow impressions for top fuel, but durability and reliability of the gasket’s coolant sealing keeps the oil and combustion chambers free of H2O based pressurized liquid, as well as any escaped compression and power stroke high pressure air hot pressurized flame from purging the coolant via radiator cap, by bullet proofing the cooling systems internal weak links (i personally want my weak links where they’re easy to locate, quick to fix, cheap, and an item you can obtain just about anywhere, or carry extra. Not everyone has an 18 hole Chevy Big Block gasket, or radiator coolant fill cap.

Pretty mild tune 4 this set up . Will last a long time . Really nice build . Wonder how much more hp with the Big 4.5 ltr Whipple supercharger on top . Not even 10 lbs of boost .

I was about to be like WTF on the water you can run a lot more boost and timing. But it sounds like they got it dialed in on the boat.

What brand of starter did you use ...i like that sound ???
Not sure. The starter is bolted to the dyno so it doesn't have to be bolted up with every engine. I think it is a Powermaster, but not sure

How many hours or miles do you get before a full rebuild? Go fast boat need a full rebuild after 50-60 hours. or 5100 miles.

A couple of motors and a couple of number six drives to hold the power along with a couple of props that can cost a few grand each it's easy to get a hundred grand in your drive train.
Did you ever check out Nelson racing the boat engine he made oh he built I think it was like 8500 RPM or 9000 RPM non stop and stop I think 1500 horseshoe like that
