China seas: A new Cold War brewing? • FRANCE 24 English

  • Long dominated by the United States, the Asia-Pacific region is grappling with an increasingly assertive China. Tensions are mounting around Taiwan and in the South China Sea, both in the air and on the water, with numerous incidents of late involving Chinese fighter planes, collisions between ships and reefs being turned into military outposts. Filmed in Japan, China, Taiwan and the Philippines, our documentary explores a new "cold war" pitting President Xi Jinping's authoritarian China against the US and its democratic allies in the region. This high-stakes conflict encompasses territorial, political, economic and ideological dimensions, as the threat of a third world war looms on the horizon.

    • @lagrangewei
      @lagrangewei Před měsícem

      China claim do not come from the name, it come from japanese WWII document, because Japan wasn't at war with US and France yet, but was with China, so they argue that SCS island are Chinese territory and occupied them. and since France and US did not want to enter the war (yet), they did not defend a claim on the islands. and since WWII requires Japan to surrender all territory taken, the territory were surrendered to China by Japan. China did not just "claim" the island, they literally landed by the island, met with the japanese garrison, and accepted their handover. You do realise that China is one of the 5 veto member because it is one of the 5 major victor of WWII?
      we can only argue it not that fair, but we cannot claim their claim is illegal because they have the paper to prove it. Philiipine does not, US were already back in Philippine when the surrender happen, it is very easy for US to just send their ship to get the island. it was INTENTIONAL, that USSR will get half of korea, US will get Japan and half of Korea, and China will get South China Seas and Taiwan.
      people need to look at Poland map before and after WWII... in war territory changes hands. as unfair as it is that poland lost it orginal territory, that is the legal.

    First of, the 2016 Arbitral Ruling is not illegal. It is very legal not just in the Philippines but also accepted globally and has become part of UNCLOS. Only China continues to insist that it is illegal, despite being an UNCLOS signatory.
    Secondly, China's sovereignty claim over areas within its so-called 9 or 10-dash line has already been declared illegal and this ruling was accepted globally.
    Thirdly, China cannot claim sovereignty over the area by using historical claims because even its history and historical maps did not consistently and clearly define the Spratly Islands, Scarborough Shoal, and even the the Paracel Islands as its own territory.
    Lastly, China cannot claim the South China Sea as its own lake and part of its territorial waters because it is not a lake and its not within their land boundaries. Even if China includes Taiwan as its territory, it is not enough to support a claim of sovereignty over the SCS, more so the WPS.

    In the shadowy depths of geopolitical ambition, Russia and China danced a sinister tango, their steps echoing the demise of the Rules Based Order and the Rule of Law. As Russia's tendrils of expansionism snaked through Europe, China's relentless hunger for hegemony devoured the tranquility of the South China Sea.
    Like vultures drawn to the scent of decay, Russia and China, birds of prey of the same nefarious feather, found solace in their shared disdain for international norms. While Russia's claws dug into the soil of European sovereignty, China's talons reached across the waves, grasping at the livelihoods and territories of its neighbors.
    Their alliance, a dark symphony of aggression and ambition, heralded a new era of defiance against the established order. As they soared together, casting shadows of fear and uncertainty, the world trembled beneath the weight of their coordinated malevolence.
    In the annals of history, the Russia-China tandem stood as a testament to the perils of unchecked power and the folly of complacency. And as they spread their wings of domination, the echoes of their sinister alliance reverberated across continents, a grim reminder that in the realm of geopolitics, birds of prey seldom fly alone.

    I think countries like France should stay in their backyards. As for the Philippines ( former American colony), which unfortunately still acts like a colony to this day, it shouldn't be ignored by China. It's unfortunate that the people of the Philippines around that area had to pay the price, but I believe that the South China Sea should be fully monitored by the PRC until American threat diminishes or America demonstrates better behavior. China shouldn't rest or ignore this because America already has the upper hand; they already have Samoa, Guam, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, the Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, etc., and not only that, they have hundreds of military bases around China, mostly in Japan and SK. So it would be foolish for China to not monitor these areas and let a country with over 800+ military bases and stronger military turn it to its playground and what America is doing right now isn't helping at all when it comes to improving relationship with China.

    Watching this video Made me Emotional. Why? China Turning Civilians to Militia to patrol in our Economic Territory. Those Militia are super brainwashed by their government. I'm glad there are still people on China wants to voice out there opinion. But of course they cannot speak loudly or they will be imprisoned. The Philippines suffered from harsh treatment of colonialism and occupation by Spanish, American and Japanese. We are not fighting Colonialism, or Occupation. We are now fighting for our sovereignty and rights.

    I really love 💕 the Japanese people and their culture! I'm glad that they are gearing up to defend themselves against their aggressors. The Chinese and Japanese nations haven't had good relations in the past. One always trying to take over the other, with Korea always in the middle of it all. All are great nations. Give peace 🕊️ a chance people. Thanks for the video 📸.

      China has never tried to take over Japan in its thousands of years of history except for Mongol invasion. On the other hand, Japan slaughtered millions of Chinese when they attacked them. Only countries that attacked Japan and occupied them is so called "western democracies". You can be brainwashed and think it's different but the history shows only on hurt Japan was the west.

    Stope using China Seas in your headlines. This only amplifies Chinese baseless claims that they own the entire contested maritime area as their own.
