- NARROW ESCAPE - our narrowboat life adventure. In this episode, we set off from one of our fondest mooring spots near Barnton tunnel and head along the Trent and Mersey Canal to the canal's most northern boundary at Preston Brook tunnel. It's a very pleasant stretch of canal although it does get pretty tight in places, as you will see in the video.

Cormorant yer you got real close he was either full or his wings were too wet to fly.
Normally when I'm kayaking past on the sea I pass them sitting on bouys and they fly away 😅 you done well 👍

Sue is a very good and safe driver, she just needs to build her confidence up. One day she might even do some lock driving you never know 😱

Hope you had a good Christmas, I managed to get out on the bike for a 23 mile ride 🙂 Tomorrow I've got a friend helping me remove all the ballast from the new project and, hopefully, break up and remove the old concrete shower tray liner - unfortunately it has been cast straight onto the base plate!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it comes out with little or no damage - watch this space!! Kevin

23 miles - that will have for the lungs working? Did you take the bike you restored out? I imagine 23 miles on that would feel like closer to 100 wouldn’t it?

@@NarrowEscape1 Nope, the restored bike is hung up!! Shower tray came out well, and the steel below is in remarkably good condition 🙂 Hope you both have a good New Year, bring on 2024.

That tunnel looks a little scary. Are there a lot of spiders or bats in there?
Hi Mike - the tunnel is OK, just a bit of a pain with the chicane in the middle. We didn’t see any bats but I bet there are thousands of spiders 🤣🤣
I hate to suggest it, but I think the cormorant might have been ill, or injured. It's so unusual to have a wild bird sit there so calmly with a human being so close. I hope I'm wrong.
We did have that thought ourselves but he didn’t look remotely stressed or hassled and he was standing bolt upright, not slumped or sitting.
We’ve come to the nicer conclusion he was just a boss…
Are you cruising thru the winter?
Hi Carol - we plan to do some cruising yes but we have a bit of a canal stoppage preventing that, or at least restricting when we can. Such is the way in winter! Oh, and thanks again for the coffees - that is very kind of you 👍😍
