      @@geetslys Hey, man, don't point that anti-fighter blaster at me.
      Still, you mention the clone wars having a lot of fighters... but... does it really? The N-1 doesn't count since its a Naboo-specific fighter outside of games. So there is what, a *V-wing* (light fighter), the *ARC* (heavy fighter which is definitely NOT just "aggressive recon" and is frankly such a good thing that it is something that I can only imagine the rebels didn't use more due to maintenance or them just mostly being gone by that point... probably the latter as they still used Y-wings), the (speaking of) *Y-wing,* (bomber, lasted long time, etc), and that shieldless fighter that they gave to Jedi.
      I mean, yes, there was the Z-95 Headhunter too (precursor to the X-wing), but you don't see too many of them usually in canon battles for some reason. Also, there was that other V-wing (which looked more like an upside-down V with a vertical line added) that predated the better and much more frequently seen V-wing (which does also look more like a V, at least from the side, but then the precursor was called "V-19" as a designation, whereas the "V-wing" was more a nickname as it was technically called the Alpha 3 Nimbus or something).
      I mean, for on-screen stuff, and not counting naboo, you mostly see what, 3-4 different republic fighters. Along with their favored gunship? Even the empire has more variants of Tie Fighter than that. And they are mostly just replacements or upgrades to either the standard tie, or (less commonly) the tie bomber.
      V-wing >>> Tie Fighter though. Some later ties, I don't know. look, just saying, but shields are a GOOD thing to put on a fighter. Even if they are compact and weak and don't get in the way, they still kinda help against small arms fire, micrometeorites, and not dying to a single lucky shot from some noob rebel or other neophyte in a complex war machine who, if you have shields, will just bang your ship up a bit and NOT kill you before you complete whatever attack run or objective you are after.
      The A-wing got that right though too. So, um, yeah. Anyway... Yeah. The V wing (nimbus) was a pretty good fighter/intercepter... um/whatever game devs want it to be (sometimes its a fighter-bomber for some reason?).

It is very interesting see the multi-faceted arms race that occurred in such a short time. Both the galactic empire and rebels have been known to take the combat data from previous engagements and apply it. The empire streamlined for cost and production numbers with their TIE/LN series and the rebels build up something that was nonstandardized, fast, less stable, and armed to the teeth with concussion missiles.” -CS/CT-8711-12 “Cheng”, Captain and Scout of the 442nd Siege Battalion

Not gonna get into why a “Siege Battalion” makes no sense because that’s on star wars lore writers, not you. I read their wookiepedia page and it seems like they can’t figure out what they actually want that unit to do (it says they are infantry but actually they are tanks, but actually they don’t use tanks they use ATRTs, but they only siege so they never use ATRTs and instead they use ISP speeders, expect that also makes no sense for a siege.

    To be honest, I feel that the Vulture is both under-appreciated, yet also at the same time perhaps underutilized/designed. I mean, the things can WALK, but they never seem to be used as walkers outside of hangars. Slap on a small anti-personel blaster or two (on pivots even), and make its droid brain able to switch into a "land mode" of operation so that it can enter facilities as a heavier weapons support for B-1s, and you'd have made the Vulture so much more frightening. A fighter that, when no longer needed for air superiority, can just come down and break down your door and walk into your facilities to support the waves of drones already giving you hell with fighter-grade weaponry... indoors.

      Design-wise it's interesting but in term of story-telling it's a bit weird. The Jedi and Sith have fought each other for centuries and they each use distinctive visual cues to identify themselves with, e.g. red light sabers vs rainbow sabers. Surely, someone, a Jedi archive keeper or a civilian geek, would've noticed and questioned why the Republic is building war machines that look like the supposedly-extinct Sith designs.
      I don't mind if triangular, wedge ships and flap-winged fighters actually did originate in the prequels but that wasn't the case. We see Siths religiously using such obvious designs since the Old Republic. It's like if the European Union one day revealed their new army filled with modernized but still boxy Tiger tanks and sporting stylized swastikas.

    • @KaptainSparta
      @KaptainSparta Pƙed 3 lety +5

      @@dareka9425 In-universe, s-foils and space wedges are popular choices because fighters with s-foils are renowned for greater mobility, and space wedge designs create a ship that has nothing but armored edges covered in guns pointing at the enemy, with a low defensive profile considering the actual size of the ship. Both are used fairly extensively by pretty much everyone in the galaxy for so long because they're just good at what they do. Additionally, tech in star wars doesn't advance as fast as you think, star wars is kind of like the end game of stellaris where you have everything researched and are just streamlining your tech more and more.

    I think one of the most overlooked aspects of the Star Wars timeline is that they have had hyperspace capability for approx. 25 millennia. My point being that the technology level reached a point where the progress moves at a snails pace. I get that every new movie needs new ships and we, as a short lived race continue to 'make new things' just for the sake of making new things. In the SW universe though we seem to get a continuous stream of new ships without pondering the 'why' of it or maybe the logic of it. I think it would be relatively common to see ships that have been around for several hundred years because the technology, based on what is in most of the timelines, has plateaued. The same with blaster tech, lightsaber contruction, power cells, etc. I find it immense enjoyment in pondering these things in my favorite universe. Also, consider the implication of tech advances in regards to social media and video storage. Would it be so rare to find videos from say 4000 years before in an archive? Considering the level of tech in this universe and that it has hit a plateau.... just some things to have fun pondering.

    I'd classify the V-19 and Z-95 as you're standard Starfighter, like the X-wing, and the ARC-170 as a Heavy Fighter, like the B-wing, V-wing is and interceptor like the A-wing. I like to think the Republic tried the first 2 as a standard fighter with the ARC-170 introduced later for special missions. But as the war dragged on the number of pilots kept getting less. and so to best counter the vast number of droid fighters the ARC-170 was put to the front as the new base Starfighter. Better to have a more specialized military if you can't win through sheer numbers. Meanwhile the V-wing was put in as a back up Starfighter to work at taking out enemy fighters with it's specialized pilots and maneuverability. Basically they ARC-170 works as a sort of bomber and specialist fighter, the V-wings can focus more on intercepting and destroying enemies.

    I really like V-Wings and ARC-170s. I think a big reason for my liking of V-Wings is that I got a Lego set of it. But thinking about it and that it inspired two subsequent craft, it makes me think of the significance of this. It shows that the Republic was both the Empire and the Rebellion in some ways, and that each took parts of it to become what they were. It's interesting to see that kind of symbolism in a ship, and I wonder how much of that is intentional and at what level it was.
