  • This is a lecture from PSYC4981, the History of Psychology, taught at the University of Queensland by Eric Vanman, Associate Professor of Psychology. It covers Gestalt Psychology, Kurt Lewin, early social psychology, as well as the rise of Cognitive Psychology in the 1950s and 1960s .
I highly recommend Wolfgang Kohler's text on Gestalt Theory: amzn.to/3CUSO1g (affiliate link)

Hi. Hundreds of people watch this video each month but I have no idea why they are watching it! Could you please leave a comment about why you’re interested in this topic, and perhaps suggest related topics I could make videos about?

I am researching and teaching Design Fundamental. When teaching about Shape in Graphic Design, it is closely related to Gestalt. Thanks for your contribution.

After watching "The Mind of a Child" about Reuven Feuerstein's work I got interested in Gestalt Psychology. Also, my mom teaches music to small children using the Kodaly method and he uses Gestalt as a basis for his method.
I also like cinema and know how "A train arriving at a station" made people run from the cinema, how close-ups were considered ridiculous because heads talking without bodies made no sense, and also how when Allan Dwan made the camera move doing a POV of a character walking though a street people got sick. Nowadays people watch Chris Nolan's "Inception" and have no problem with cities folding into themselves and dreams inside dreams.

      Two more things:
      1) Thanks for the lesson!
      2) Why do I have a hard time convincing intelligent and well educated people that preschool is the most important period in a person's education? My hypothesis is most people don't remember that period since memories are based on gestalts and since they were aquiring them they can't remember the period. (Gestalt in the sense Kodaly and Feuerstein use it).

I aslo want to say this: I don't know if you study your speech beforehand, but its so fluent and flowing and so concise, I really can't stop myself from listening to you.
I just wanted to appreciate something that's deserving. Thank you 😊

I’m a design student, my curiosity about the origins of gestalt psychology & how the principles were developed is what led me here. This is very helpful, thanks for sharing!
