The "structural issues" enabling the gender discrepancy in interest in the different fields have been shown to be attenuated by gender segregated education. This makes complete sense. After all, It is because female athletes are segregated from competition with men that they are able to compete. To state the obvious: such equalization is predicated upon discrimination and segregation. But even with segregation it should come as no surprise that more boys than girls show an interest in engineering and advanced mathematics. There are innate mean differences between the genders and the exceptions simply confirm the rule.
There does seem to be a fear of acknowledging that differences exist. This is due to the wrong granting of worth to the differences. In any instance worth can be given to many characteristics - artistic ability, patience, problem solving, in other words not only the money making ones!
