FINALLY !!! I am so happy I found this video. Needed to replace the transmission belt on LA115 and I had all the rest figured out (but you gave additional good tips on hard to get off parts) by other videos I watched. EXCEPT how to deal with that pesky little stay spindle next to the transmission pulley. It looked to me like I had to reach back there and slowly extricate it from the transmission and it was going to be a real PITA so I thought "Naw, can't be." But nobody else's video showed that little part because they were for other models that did not have it. Even my technical repair manual for my LA115 does not show this. It says just lift the belt up over the pully and I'm like "Yeah, Right! How the heck do I do that?" You showed me it was exactly what it looked like and I needed to just suck it up, be patient, and get it done. So I did. Thank you very much and great video.

Simply amazes me when they engineer these things and don't keep the consumer in mind to replace a belt. I won't even mention what the local JD shop charges to replace this belt. I'm 80 and have always done my own work. Starting at working on farm tractors, trucks and cars at a early age. Getting harder to do but again folks work smarter not harder. Thanks for the very informative video.

I'm in my eighties also and have when possible do my own repairs. What has always been my pet peeve is paying for repair work and not having the work done properly yet the bill is always to the high side. I have been cutting lawns for 75 years and experienced some workmanship that has left a bad taste in my mouth. I run a lawn service and do all the work myself. I did two big lawns today complete. I live in NE Wisconsin and being fall the leaves add double to the lawn cutting/collecting chore.

This a first-rate instructional video. When I first watched it late last summer, I felt overwhelmed and decided against it (the belt wasn't so bad after all ...). After working underneath and getting a feel for the machine, and then watching again, I feel more confident that I can do it! Update: This afternoon I successfully changed my transmission drive belt. The old one had dozens of cracks in it, so it was just in time.

Excellent video!! The dealership wanted $300 for the labor to do this job. At $125/hr, that's 2.4 hours, which is pretty much what it took me to do it myself thanks to this video. THANKS!! Perhaps the best idea in the video is lifting the machine by the nose to access the parts. Trying to remove and replace that belt retainer post in the transmission would have been horrendous on my belly with the machine up on jack stands! Thanks again and God bless you, sir!

One thing I always use is my air hammer against the bolt halfway out to remove the engine pulley or clutch if seized , same goes for the pulleys. Pull on the pulley while hitting the bolt with the air hammer and they just pop right off. Keep the riding mower content comming.

Runs perfectly again. Like all the other commenters not only is this a very well done video, I also find it amazing that you do so much with just one hand. Agree this is the best post online for the job! I have the 175 hydro LT and am stuck. None of the videos I've seen show the sector shaft forward of the steering which prevents me from getting the belt around it to the engine pulleys. I've not been able to get the cotter pin off the shaft and can't work it off from the steering support below.
Your video was great for removing and replacing the steering.
I found a, maybe, easier way to get the belt over the transmission pulley. Since my belt broke, I didn't have to remove the old one. I was able to snake the belt back between the fan and right side of tractor. Leaving a lot of slack rearward, I was able to slip it over the top of the fan by depressing each fan blade individually and turning the fan while slipping the belt on top of fan and onto the pulley.

Along with the other 500 comments, amazing video. Best one. Quick note on the bar near the rear that's a pistol to remove. It's really easy to do when you remove the fan. With the right tool, that clip is easy to remove. So worth the investment takes seconds on that bar once the fan is removed. Allen wrench on top of that post makes it easy.

The guide pin In the transmission was a bear to get out. I looked it over after i got it out and noticed it was an allen head on the other end from the threads. I took out the drink holder out and put my hand through there with a 6mm/7/32 allen socket with a one inch ext. and put it between the fan blades the a 3/8 ratchet and went in really easy. Next time I do one I will take it out the same way and not fight it. Just thought this might help.

I didn't need to replace my belt, it had popped off the rear pulley. Knowing what the retainer bolt looked like and that it was a 15mm made the difference between a quick fix and drudgery.

Hey thanks for the video, I was able to replace the transmission belt on the D160. I actually used this repair as an excuse to buy a new tool, lol.A Ryobi 1/2 cordless impact wrench, works great.Anyway the worst part was getting that rear pulley guard thing out….and back in…thanks again…My next project is getting my old LA120 running again…I got a new S170 last year

Back in the day I always used air guns. When they came out with the rechargeable battery powered impacts and all hand held in general. GAME CHANGER!!! I only need compressed air to clean with. I even went to a battery powered air pump for the tractor tires. It does take a little longer but as I have aged, I now how so much more patience :) LOL!! I'm glad to hear all went good! Subscribe, give this video a thumbs up and share the channel to help it grow. It would be greatly appreciated!

First of all, great video! Couldn’t have done it the job without it. I was cruising till I got to 15mm bolt that keeps the belt on the transmission pulley. I’ve bad hand tremors and this was almost impossible but I finally got it out. When I did, I noticed the top of that bolt has a slot for a hex key. Not sure if anyone else mentioned this. It really helped me so I wanted to pass it on.

Hi Joe, thank you. Yes many have told me about it but I’m not good with editing videos so I’m not sure how to incorporate it into the video or when the next transmission belt job comes in I’ll do it then! I’m glad it was helpful and thanks for watching:)

Unfortunately some models, like my D140, where the fan is above the pulley, have a belt guide, shaped like a bolt, that must be removed to install the belt.
Gotta love Joe Smith's discovery -
"I noticed the top of that bolt had a slot for a hex key"
A small DeWalt electric screwdriver and the correct hex bit (6mm), and it was out, and back in, quick.

thx, I did mine last year, and used your video. Anyone doing this video is excellent and with it you can do.
Impact for the dropping the PTO clutch is a must. Don't have one, borrow one!
That back guide bolt in back on trans def. is a pain, but other than that not bad of a job. Mine slipped off at @200 hours , but noticed split in belt so if you have to pull your deck anywhere around 200 hours and haven't replaced, go ahead and do is my advice. After I took deck off I titled my mower on two tires and made sure it was secure and was able to get to everything.

Very well done, sir. One thing I discovered just the other day after watching your video was that there is an Allen fitting on top of the shaft that holds the belt at the top of the transmission. So when I took it off to get the belt on I found the Allen fitting. When I put it back on it was so much easier to just put a stubby Allen wrench in to screw it back down. The bolt is called a 'belt keeper stud' on the John Deere website. Hope this helps.

Hmm ... Just did my older John Deere (Scotts, 16 years old) and I did not need to take off the clutch. Just loosened the front pulley belt guide and slipped the belt on. Also ... same around the trans pulley... No guide was there, just a bracket that was easy to flex open a little and let the the new belt slide around the pulley. Makes it a little easier on the older J.D. models. Everything else was the same though. JD (Scotts/Sabre/Murrey) have been making this design lawn tractor for 20+ years. Good tractors at the right price. Local lawn mower repair shop quoted me $180 to replace my drive belt.. cost me just $19. Nice video!
