- My new transition into a new army means I have to setup my gear and equipment in a new way! Lets take a look how I pack my kit like a mong! :-)

A Cool mod you can do on your Tac Vest is replacing one of the C9 pouch with one of the pouches you get with your small pack. you can fit more stuff in there. I've also bought the CP Gear Hydration back for the vest (it replaces the original back of the vest) overall love your content! it's nice to see another reservist talking about kit and there trade!

You'll turn that canteen pouch sideways after your first ruck march! It's a bit too high to access easily from the vest vest in the upright position with one hand. After 9 years and an 8 month deployment I never had one of those clips break on me, they're quite well made.

Great video ! For my Watch EDC I upgraded the digital watch to 24-Hour Mode, NATO watch band (have to break both pins to lose the watch) and a name brand SUUNTO button compass from REI. About the only thing that is the same from the old days to the "NEW" is the Bayonet ! (for cutting wire) tjl

I learned the toilet paper lesson very early on in my time in the Boy Scouts of America (10 years total). It also applies to hunting. Always, always, always carry a few packs of MRE toilet paper and a roll of 2 ply because no one likes having to use leaves.

I absolutely love my Can2005 bayonet, cant really stand tac vests myself but I am fond of the older Pattern 82 webbing.

Good setup. I'm naval reserves so our FFO is a little different (we have "war bags"). Only time we wear the tac vest / flak and helmet is when we are doing FP when along side port or during action stations for crews that are allowed on the upper decks (.50 cal teams, etc)
Reading the comments in here how everybody gets along so well from all sort of life and nations, I am so touched. Ordinary people do not want wars and ordinary folks do get along with each other, only the governments that don't. If war ever broke out between the West and the East guys remember this, all wars are pointless and we are the blue pale dot in this galaxy. We will all regret it the instant nukes raining down on our own planet.

The water bottle and cup, and the woollen toque are exactly the same as the ones I was issued in 1981. Everything else has changed.
If all go's to plan I will hopefully be enrolled in the caf regular force as a mscop by January

For the Tape instead of the electrician one, use Hockey Tape (you can find it in walmart or canadian tire, ....).
You have a map and no compass?
When it's cold here take also some matches, the Bic will not work even if you try to reheat it on your hands.
I second the other comment about swapping the pouches on the side, if you have them. Otherwise I'd reccomend you try and see if you can swap your toque for the new one, its a lot thinner, a lot less itchier and its very warm. Another thing that served me well is a Nalgeen canteen instead of the issued one, helped a lot with my water freezing issues.
Minus 10 to minus 18 Centigrade can be nice. Minus 30 C is cold. But holy cow what a crap and suffering it was with half a week in plus 2 Centigrade, snow to the thighs and constant rain!

It could be the the red lens washes out red markings on maps, maybe they show up better with the purple?
It's really interesting that you didn't go through some form of basic training, but was allowed to start immediately training with your unit. You mentioned in another video that you are in an artillery unit--will you be an actual gunner or stepping into their maintenance billet?

Bloody hell.....years ago, there where old timer Sgt Major's etc that INSISTED that every troop carried every single piece of kit they where issued for the Ex's...utterly STUPID to carry stuff you;d never use in a million years of Sundays...same Senior NCO's LOVED to dick troops around...even though weapons had been fully and properly cleaned, they'd have everyone sitting around for another few hours re-cleaning clean weapons......talk about brilliant use of time ;)

Forgive me, I skipped through a few bits so I'm sorry if you do talk about this but, your tac vest looks so good! Is that issued?
In my basic training in the Bundeswehr, one of our NCO's tolds us to fix a lighter with tape on a spoon.
When your in the field, and want to warm up your EPA (MRE), you need fire for your hexi stove, and the only thing you need for eating is a spoo. , Even when you get ready meals from the chefs, the meat is so soft, you didn't need a knife and a fork 😉!
I still use this spoon (with a new lighter), when I'm on exercise with the reserves. But I still have two or three other lighters in my trouser, smock or rucksack, because when your out in the field, at least one of them would be empty 😂😂!

it was THE Canadian Forces that DEVELOPED the World's first Digital Cam for uniforms...the Cadpat......EVERYTHING else is a copy or borrow of the technology....the US's MARPAT and UCP where direct copies with colour changes....

Not to take away from the Canadians' work, but the original digital concepts were developed by the US Army at Natick. The Canadians refined it, then the Marines adapted it for their purposes--and the US Army totally screwed it up with UCP...
That digital relish is really effective though.
@ Pete...I understand that the "original" BLOCK camo was developed at Natick...it was applied to the sides of M113's and M60 tanks...it was NO WHERE close to the macro / Micro patterning and shapes of the Digital Cam patterns...it WAS solely developed BY the Canadians, it is PATENTED by the Canadians...EVERYTHING else that came after is a direct copy or use of the tech. The "Original Natick" stuff had ZERO knowledge or conceptualization of how the Digital patterning would play on nightvision and optics or on how to macro/micro the pattern for the best results.....and IF your are reffering to the 2002 - 2004 Natick Camo pattern TESTING?...BS.....the Canadian Forces had already LONG developed the CADPAT and was ISSUING it to the troops for several years!.

Your water bottle pouch is actually the c9 pouch.

Being in the Marines - I think on my flack the most i can fit without being too bulky is a small tool kit/ifak(trauma kit)/drop pounch/3 (6x)mag pouches/water bladder pouch on the back. That usually fills out the front and side areas and anything more will get you snagged up on things. We phased out LBV's a while ago, but even with flacks we dont pack 'everything' on them. Is that like a general SOP to pack all your stuff on your kit? Personally it sounds like an organization nightmare doing it like that.
I prefer to use a harness carry system too

Hey Matsimus, why are you using a 1qt canteen with canteen cup in the LMG pouch? Use your proper 1qt canteen pouch it is designed to fit it like a glove. Also how the heck did they let you leave the armoury with your bayonet and BFA?

I'm thinking of joining the canadian armed forces myself, any recommendations on where I should go, Matsimus?
We don't have strict regulations on gear- it only has to be in neutral camo- like multi- cam, or tan or olive drab. So i use webbing gear- which i had found to be most comfortable- it is russian RPS Smersh webbing gear- because if you can fit an AK mag in pouch everything else will fit there too. Plus it distributes weight very well arround waist and back, and it has better air circulation since there is no extra layer of cloth on your torso. I remember our equipment- back in 2013. it was consisting from sweedish surplus webbing gear, from cold war era, than norwegian surplus tactical vests- striidswest or something like that with removable pouches. Now we have our own tactical wests in Multi- Lat pat camo with non- removable sewn on 4 magazine pouches in front- kinda like a chests rig configuration, with two grenade pouches above to each shoulder and 2 utility pouches on side.and most useless part molle system on backside- :D Useless because if you carry a backpack you cant attach anything and uncomfortable because if you attach a radio pouch or day pack than just to get stuff out of your bag- you have to take off the vest. Just a cheap knock off... Reminds of 90's style russian gear.

not sure how reserves are kitted but why bring the 1L rubber canteen instead of the 1L thermos? the canteen freezes in like 30 seconds. A tip, put the C6 ammo pouch on both sides instead of the canteen carrier, its a bigger pouch so you can put insulators or pocket warmers around your water bottle so it doesn't freeze.
I'm kind of upset that you had to buy you're own campaint, if they force you to use that worthless crap they should at least be providing it
The mortar gloves > gardening gloves nothing beats mechanix impacts for the field tho

It's actually for hunting; that shade of light makes reddish colors (like blood) much easier to see.

that tac vest reminds me of the crap vest I have to wear in cadets. It has buckles on the shoulder so shouldering the rifle when prone is really uncomfortable
never liked winter at -40. Blew up an immersion heater at 3am, woke everyone! I guess that dates me? Leopard tank rides ceased once the two met at speed. I won't elaborate in that one, was a long time ago.

Hey Matsimus. Im currently making Canadian Army loadout for my airsoft game, its kinda hard to find what gears are the Canadians use for their military. What major differences would you say there is between the Canadian and British army Matsimus mate? In the paras we trained quite a bit with the US 101st & 82nd Airborne and also the German Fallschirmjäger.. I have to say the Germans inpressed me the most...not quite the maroon machine but still pretty good lol

The Fallshirmjager Korps is a stout bunch of troops, no doubt...they may be a small bunch but they are solid....in all honesty, ALL of the NATO Paras are all about the exact same...they all train often together and are doing so more now than ever....last year the Canadian Jumpers hosted American, French, Brit and some others, Belgians I think for a "wings exchange" series of jumps...it is and has been this way for decades........take a look at the paras, IF they are allowed, most sport wings from allied NATO countries.........WHERE the difference is is this...The American Paras form a HUGE organization...massive...heavily supported and with the Biggest Airforce to get them there.....everyone else just DOES the job, no fuss, no muss the best they can...true Airborne spirit....from what I have gleened, the Brits have and still do jump LOWER than just about everyone.....parachutes are different, most others use American style chutes....beyond that...the taskings are the same, numbers are different...but my Black Beret off to each and every one that jumps....
SABRE 21 - we jump from 800 feet in training and it would be 500 feet in a real conflict. At that hight you dont need a reserve cos the would be no time to deploy it...every jump I did i was sacred but the fear of failure is stronger.
@ GPZ...are you a Brit Para or a Fallshirmjager? either way...you sky jumpers have my respect and awe.....tough as nails troops.....we Armoured Recce types with our wheels or tracks firmly on the ground watch with respect at the jumpers falling from the sky..... "Ex Colis" right?....
I am Canadian I'm surprised in the 21st century we do not use play carriers kind of stereo great job man my question is why would you leave the British Army and comes to the Canadian Army which is massively underfunded? I know this is probably an old video I'm just curious?
Canadian kit is never in the AN stores here, never even see cadpat. Cadpat would work great here in VT USA. I also still prefer webbing over chest rigs. I prefer the us Alice gear, but if I could get the British plce stuff I'm sure I would like that too.
How flexible are the reserves I've been thinking about it lately but I'm a forest fire fighter in bc so in the summers making the weeknights and some weekends wouldn't be very doable but I have all the time in the world in the winter??
Pretty flexible, pretty much a good portion of my platoon were firefighters when I was in. Even one had his own private firefighting company. It’s just a matter to talking to your chain of command, pretty sure they’ll understand. A good portion of reservist are first responders.
Its flexible for the most part. You don't have to attend every training session.
Technically you only need to attend one parade night per month. But that’s bare minimum. A lot of guys do two drill nights a month and the one weekend if they can.

Hiya. I was army reserves 1988-1991. Anyway, I only know the 82 Pattern rucksack. I'd sure like a breakdown and critique of the new pack. Guy at surplus shop said pretty blocky. Also, does not fit well on short soldiers. Thoughts? (Also, I've developed a latex-based bungee cord system with plastic plate pivot points of the 82 Pattern. Fully Suspended rucksack, simply using a 2nd wireframe. I think you'd be interested... lemme know.
We in the Belgian army used in the past the chest webbing , similar like yours now,which were very good and well liked, but in 2006 we change to a Molle-System Bearvest with very unpractically pockets witch are very clumsy. Every boddy disliked it so a lot of guy's bought their one webbing. I personally use the tasmanian tiger chest rig mk2 m4 in combination with a warrior-belt. Officially it's not allowed but it depends on your unit. Some units allow it others don't.

Do you have to buy a lot of the gear yourself? Doesn't the army provide everything?
Do these magazine pouches hold 2 mags each? If not, isn't just 4 pouches too little. Although artillery crews aren't exactly frontline troops.
4 mags in pouches 1 in the side, everyone wears patrol packs on their back with extra ammo tho
We were engineers (RE) issued with longs (rifles ) but we weren't really expected to use them in anger. I, and others, were forever saying we should be issued pistols or sub-machine guns but no , we still had to lug these humungous rifles around with us . We were issued with one (yes a whole one) mag each which, with the rifles, were purely decorative. I if we ever had to fight an infantry type action it would mean our infantry cover out in the hills around us were over run and we were anyway
